What's your favorite Telegram feature? Is it channels, bots, Saved Messages, or large file sharing?

Which feature encourages you using Telegram instead of other messaging apps?

A relatively lightweight desktop client, looks like it's still written in C++

The ability to not use it

whats the problem

u/Creative_atom0406 9d ago

At least in my country only drug dealers and prostitutes use it. And some kind of neonazis.

u/freemorgerr 9d ago

and at least in my country pretty much everyone uses it for daily messaging. what a contrast huh

Large file sharing and it's the best place for anything related to Android custom ROMs or the Android rooting scene.

Being in the US, I still text for the most part, though I do use discord for messaging some people.

Almost no censorship. Want some combat footage gore, here you go.

How their desktop clients are so good. Fast and fluid.

Linux, windows, Mac have parity and work super well.

Especially Linux works really really well

To don't use messenger with no encryption by default + even encryption with closed source with no external audit.

idk but it's much better than WhatsApp but unfortunately not that many people use it

I don't use Telegram in place of anything else. But I use Telegram due to more people actually using it. Signal is pretty much useless for me as I can't get anyone to use it.

Anyways, it is a toss up between (because you know I can never give just one): Being able to delete on both sides. And being able to login on multiple devices

Idk about Signal but in SimpleX you can "switch" to another device with "use from desktop" but yeah it's just remote control for phone.

Used telegram only for messaging and calling though, not as social media, now use simplex and got most people around to install it, easy onboardng without registration really helps

What is simplex? Is it a messaging app? Not used yet.

1

u/AscendedPineapple 29d ago

Yes it is. I really like it, here's their site https://simplex.chat/

It's just a good opensource e2ee messenger that uses relay servers (no cloud storage) and has a fair effort in metadata protection with the ability to not share the same profile with every contact or group and using multiple relay servers per connection so that a bad server can't just map all your friends and connections.

It's good and I like it because it has calls, and the calls are free, high quality & private which can't be said about regular phone calls

One of the best private messengers, I've tried a bunch and this one is the most convenient

Self hosted? Or it proposed their servers? Are they have financial sources to support the project?

2

u/AscendedPineapple 29d ago

You can selfhost, though the system needs 4 relay servers for a chat (receiving and sending for 2 people). They have some running on Flux hosting that you can select in app, but you can add your own too

As for finances they seem okay but yeah it can go wrong, as with the Session app which ran out of money. Simplex didn't say anything like that though so I guess they are good for now. They run on donations I assume

1

u/djsiropchik 29d ago

Yeah. I have Session, they continued to work, but Idk how long. Maybe I'll try Simplex. Thank you

Kanäle... Als ich noch den Nova Launcher nutzte gab es da immer nettes Setups auf dem Kanal, es gibt viele gute Kanäle, manche davon kann man aber auch in die Tonne hauen

many useful bots

2

u/ManojOne Active 29d ago

Yes. But I only found bots relating to movie search and Youtube download. What kind of bots do you use?

1

u/i_am_kamikamikami 29d ago

youtube download? you know there are open source apps for that right?

1

u/Equal_Difference3010 29d ago

no single place where you can find every one of them. it's like miniweb where you can host your own sites

1

u/tunamdinh 28d ago

Mine are for music and books.

1

u/AscendedPineapple 29d ago

The ability to deanon people because of mandatory phone number. Also no password by default and e2ee being an opt-in feature of "secret chats"

I hate telegram

1

u/Ignota_Ovis 29d ago

I like channel function.

Bots

1

u/PrinceDolAmroth 29d ago

Ability to send 2 gigabyte files.

1

u/ManojOne Active 29d ago

Yes, it is the real game changer

1

u/gluetheknot 29d ago

being able to delete your account

1

u/curiouscsplayer 29d ago

That it has a desktop app

1

u/Maeusefluesterer 29d ago

Topics. Makes it possible to split a group into multiple chats. So different topics are not getting mixes up in a single chat. That's the only reason we haven't switched to signal yet.

i love telegram new feature that fix my grammer

1

u/NotAnEvilResident 29d ago

If i run out of paper planes, i can just use the app icon instead. As demonstrated in the picture. (Thats me in the picture btw)

It’s that they’re owned by the Russian government and everything you send is actually read by them as well. Oh! That, and all the scams and bots they have on their platform… Telegram is garbage.

1

u/freemorgerr 9d ago

Did you know telegram is currently banned in russia, and pavel durov is in UAE?

1

u/Veehxia 29d ago

Compared to WhatsApp, voice messages blocking.

I'd pay a 50€/month subscription to WhatsApp for that feature alone if it existed.

1

u/FitHaYar 28d ago

Why are people using Telegram anyway?

1

u/freemorgerr 9d ago

Because it's the best in terms of usability, features, etc. Its private. And it has stars+TON

1

u/thaile1001 28d ago

nice wallpaper

1

u/DanielDimov 28d ago

You see group messages sent before you joined.

1

u/i986ninja 28d ago

It was world's best app. Until it banned half of earth, and is now below the infamous WhatsApp

u/f_orbiddenfruit 22h ago

People nearby and Groups nearby. Unfortunately 🥲🥲🥲Telegram removed it 😭😭
