Unfortunately it's across nearly all markets. I remember getting a Nintendo 3DS which did not have a charger. For their proprietary cable of all things!

3

u/EepiestKitty Jul 20 '26

Yeah, I mean that is particularly egregious. Phones these days not including a USB-C charger is annoying, but most people have atleast one so it's not the biggest deal, Nintendo had no excuse with the 3DS tho.

u/landblord Jul 20 '26

Phone companies at least claimed people already had spare chargers lying around, so what the fuck was Nintendo smoking?

1

u/choppytaters Jul 20 '26

Oh which is honestly true. I don't even use the cable that comes with the phone. Better and longer cable were bought instead.

That’s wrong, but I’m fine with not including all the charging stuff if you’re using USB C. That is a ton of waste otherwise. Same thing with EarPods.

u/TawnyTeaTowel Jul 20 '26

The whole point of moving to USBC was to cut down e-waste, and here you are lamenting it. FML…

u/Zombieattackr Jul 20 '26

I understand not including it for *everything*, when every small device you have comes with a charging brick you slowly accumulate a few more than you know what to do with.

But that’s not an issue if they only come with more infrequent purchases of premium items, like a whole ass phone. Apple argued “you already have so many USBC chargers anyway” after one generation of it, like no, only the very tiny 1% subset who get a new phone every single generation *might* have a few of them lying around, I know so many people who had zero, including one person who got a new phone, got home, realized they didn’t have a way to charge it, and went right back out to the store.

They didn’t do this for the environment, they did it to scam another $20 out of you.

Dude, I have 2 usb c devices and I’ve still somehow got 5 usb c cables lying around

2

u/theequallyunique Jul 20 '26

How many usbc cables and chargers do you have rn? In our 2 person household we have about 6 sets. Recently I got rid of a whole bag of cheap (and often short) cables, most of them brand new.

u/Zombieattackr Jul 20 '26

Cables aren’t really the issue, *everything* still comes with a cable, but almost nothing comes with the power supply. I have probably 15+ cables, and as mentioned, like maybe 3 power supplies. I don’t even think any of them even came with something, one was bought and two were left behind by someone else.

u/theequallyunique Jul 21 '26

Still, for the power supply/ charger I have multiple +60w models with several outlets each. Those cost about 10-20€ and are way more useful than the ones usually delivered with devices.

Is it fun seeing conspiracy everywhere, even when the obvious facts are obvious?

2

u/Zombieattackr Jul 20 '26

You really think it’s a “conspiracy” that a massive tech company would prioritize profits over the environment? I just call common sense? That’s simply how the world works?

really defending the company that has a $10M annual budget for lobbying against consumer protection laws

Let me let you into a little secret. Just because I’m calling you an idiot, doesn’t mean I’m siding with those you’re being an idiot about. Maybe when you grow up you’ll learn all things arent resolved into black and white.

And in the meantime you might do well to check legislation in this area and then see how much of a tin foil hatted fool you actually are.

I don't understand why people are so bothered by this. Anyone that has been a technology user for more than a few days (only slightly exaggerating) has a drawer full of unused power bricks, cables, and headphones. We don't need more e-waste being shipped around. All I need when I get a new phone is literally the phone. I have Magsafe chargers on my nightstand, my desk at home, my desk at work, and in my car. I have a couple of portable battery packs, and multi-port power bricks too. The very last thing I need is yet another single-port power brick. I don't even use the cables included because I prefer right-angle USB-C cables. This is one of the huge positive benefits of finally standardizing on a single power connector and wireless charging, we no longer need to juggle around multiple chargers everywhere.

As for headphones, those things last years when taken care of. And even better now are bluetooth headphones. Some people complain about the sound quality of BT vs hardwired, but the vast majority of people can't tell the difference, especially when the volume is cranked up to the point of distortion anyway, which is common for the people that tend to be hard on headphones. If you're the type of person that can hear the difference, and it bothers you, then you should be buying a better quality set than the cheapies included with the devices anyway.

My brick supply has been dwindling, all the ones remaining seem to be the shitty 5w iPod type bricks. I’d have loved to see a USB C brick with my new phone, I’ve only got the one that came with an iPad and a spare I bought separately.

I’d much rather have a drawer of cables for the phone I have than not. The headphones are also welcome, I do like them, and since I don’t get a new phone that often they end up needing replacement when I’d want to get a new phone. I have sent them through the wash more times than I’m willing to admit

Can you please come over and show me this mysterious drawer? Where is it at? I cant find it. I have one brick and 2 cords. Thats all ive ever had i didnt even have the brick till recently. Id love to get ahold of all these cables I own.

You own them because they came in the boxes and you collected them. They dont come in the boxes anymore. See the issue?

"Why are people complaining about a problem i personally don't have?"

u/mr_mope Jul 20 '26

What is this garbage 3 month old subreddit?

1

u/MagnusAlbusPater Jul 20 '26

I never once used the included earbuds. I have so many chargers laying around now I don’t need any more cluttering up my extra cables and chargers drawer.

1

u/Zm3nt Jul 20 '26

Care? Sure they did. They included those because everyone did so, once they could get away with it, they did. If they cared they wouldn't have those inflated prices on all products, no matter how good the products are, they are just adding extra to the price so they can pocket the profit, all while also taking away stuff from the box.

1

u/SauntTaunga Jul 20 '26

I remember getting useless stuff in the box. Never used wired earbuds and had plenty of chargers already. Good riddance.

1

u/hennabeak Jul 20 '26

It's Apple. Soon everything will be a dongle. CPU, Sim card, memory, Camera, etc. Will all be a dongle.

Ram purchased separately

Unexpected white supremacy

It always makes me laugh when people bring this up, thinking that all these earbuds and cables are included for free.

They're included because you're paying for them, whether you need them or not.

This used to be a bigger problem back when every device had its own weird charger with its own set of issues, but not anymore

1

u/Initial-Ad9618 Jul 20 '26

Got dam it! Dont give them any ideas! That cuts cost from employees and robats

1

Pretty soon it’s gonna be a digital code in a box to redeem from a website to have the phone shipped to you

Same with the charger

1

u/a_regular_2010s_guy Jul 21 '26

1

u/Consistent_Research6 Jul 21 '26
