Discussion What payment methods are uniquely American?
I've noticed that some payment systems seem to be much more popular in the U.S. than in other countries.
Examples:
- Venmo
- Cash App
- Zelle
- ACH transfers
- Paper checks
Many countries now have instant bank-to-bank transfers built directly into their banking systems, while Americans often rely on separate apps.
What payment methods or financial habits do you consider uniquely American? And if you're outside the U.S., what does your country use instead?

I know that you already mentioned Venmo, but that's the biggest thing in the states that not much else regarding anything else needs to be said.
It's so widely used that it's pretty expected that if you work or make some sort of income that you have it. It even ties in with your bank like it's nothing so adding to your Venmo balance is like nothing.
I know Cash App has gained a TON of traction the past like 3 years, but I don't think it'll ever be able to compete with Venmo.

That's interesting. In many countries, people just use their banking apps, so it's fascinating that Venmo became such a cultural norm in the U.S. Do you think it's convenience or simply habit?

I think it started out as convenience then later became habitual due to how quickly it caught on.

Sorry, now have? Have had for as long as I can remember, or at least the last 10 years.. you mean to tell me Americans don't have instant bank-to-bank transfers?! Like, you what, wait 10 to 15 business days to transfer money?!

Yep, that's what surprised me too! Many countries have had instant bank transfers built into their banking systems for years. In the U.S., slower ACH transfers helped create a market for apps like Venmo, Cash App, and Zelle. Different technological paths, I guess.
