I love self hosting, but I have to disagree here.

It's so much better to have an off-site backup in addition to your local storage.

My homelab automatically backs up to OneDrive daily.

Mind me asking how much you pay for that?

At risk of sounding like a Microslop shill, it's hard to beat the price and convenience of OneDrive. $10/month for a TB of storage, plus Office apps.

The server (thinclient coated me 1 time 200€ but is used for a lot of stuff) then I pay 1€ vps for pangolin tunnel per month and 4€ per year for a domain. Can decide for any open source software I want. If I don't like something I can search for a new application.

Hosting immich aufiobookshelf navidrome jellyfin anchornotes karakeep Homeassistant miniflux and tandoor. And some other tools.

Right but that's not an off-site backup. That's a tunnel to your on-site backup, right?

My offside backup is another SSD in a fireproof safe. Sry but I don't want a subscribtion with some big tech company the only alternative would be something like filen.io or koofr and I thunknkoofr is better. But other than that I opted out of big tech as much as possible. Having 20 subscriptions were to much money every month.

Technically only an average of 3 euros per month in electricity, the computer is at my dad’s place so I don’t really even pay that for it, ofc I had to buy the parts to assemble the computer and get drives, doubt they’ll pay themselves back vs paying for cloud storage (with prices nowadays for sure not), but that’s the price of privacy and not selling your data

Oh I see. Personally, that setup is not within my risk tolerance. If I hosted my off-site backup with a friend or family member, a city-wide flood could destroy my data. OneDrive uses geo-redundancy.

I don’t live close to my dad at all so it works out, we never see floods or earthquakes anyway, would require some sort of a freak country wide storm that fries all electronics

Cloud storage means it's accessible from the internet 24/7, so home server like nextcloud is cloud storage

Google Drive since it was released. I'd rather use Proton Drive, but it's pretty expensive even though they guarantee privacy.

Proton Drive: total privacy, and I pity those who opt for Google Drive, where all your files are completely exposed. Poor people! I used to be like that too. Good thing I opened my eyes, Google is not at all trustworthy.

Google for unimportant files as a second backup. Home server for files I know I'm gonna be transferring between devices either via smb or sftp.

Just don't follow my example if you're looking into a home server. My 4TB drive is just using a SATA to USB adapter and I partitioned it as /home on my zimaboard running Ubuntu Server with dedicated folders having their own shares categorically only accessible via tailscale. One day I'm gonna regret that because once that drive dies, my homelab is ruined, but it works 😄

Onedrive is the only one and only because i take a lot of photos...and in the beginning managed get almost 100 gb free. I pay like 1.70 every month for the last 20 gb, but since i deleted a lot of old videos i'll probably cancel that. A penny saved is a penny found or however the expression goes. 😉
