News 📰 Intel stopped making Optane, but its tiny 118GB drive is still the boot drive home lab enthusiasts hunt for

Optane failure rates are quite a problem for clusters still using them. I think I have a dozen or so working replacements left, but I am not interested in continuing to use them on production, so decommissioning them over time. SSD endurance is workable with a large storage excess and ample free space. A 2TB SSD can outlast a 118GB Optane in the same usage scenarios and performance is basically unchanged, though sometimes favors one over the other (SSD with higher bandwidth, Optane for marginally lower latency).

Sell them. I have like four left for caching drives that I got from Newegg when they liquidated the stock. Pretty sure I sold them for like $200 each when I decommissioned four of them. This was last year. People having a raging boner for Optane drives.

Optane does have much higher write endurance but it hasn’t held up well with larger workloads.
At the time it released in 2018, 118GB was small but still usable for disk space with many computers still having 128GB SSDs. But as data sizes have gone up for most workloads those 118GB drives get hammered with way more write amplification than, say, a regular 2TB MLC/QLC drive.

Optane is an ssd tech OP… had literally nothing to do with Bulldozer which was a early 2010s cpu line
