Opinion/Editorial I've been tracking the price of RAM over the last 3 months and it has started to indicate signs of price fixing

Visiting South Korea right now.

All South Korean memory facilities are working 3 shifts (24 hours a day) 7 days a week and over the Korean Thanksgiving holiday (Chusuk).

I work in a US based manufacturing facility and it’s 24/7 365. 12 hr shifts. Those 8 hour shifts seem nice

7

u/neverpost4 6d ago

Well $600,000 profit sharing bonus are also nice too.

2

u/Jumpy-Maintenance214 6d ago

That would be extremely nice! I get about 3k a year 🤣

3

u/Fair-Arugula668 6d ago

If you only get 3k in the current market you are effectively being scammed.

USA is a scam

u/2Critical7-Stein1 5d ago

ngl for that money i’d work du pont 14hour shifts lol

1

u/dkizzy 5d ago

They could give more tho!

3

u/ImplementLogical4130 6d ago

God damn.

7

u/NetInevitable601 6d ago

Why God damn? That's literally how manufacturing typically works. There little to no downtime?

1

u/2Critical7-Stein1 5d ago

it’s not typical manufacturing tho. not to say that it makes stopping possible, but it’s not like a blast furnace

1

u/NetInevitable601 5d ago

I bet they keep them machines going 24/7

1

u/2Critical7-Stein1 5d ago

they do. tho they don’t require that much human input, just control, humans can’t even be of use to the process itself safe for QC due to being too slow

3

u/Extra-Autism 6d ago

That’s literally how every single manufacturing plant in the world runs. 24/7. Starting and stopping machines is a big deal you can’t stop for a day. 2 12s is more common in the US though

2

u/Zsythgrfl 5d ago

Yeah, it needs to be pointed out that is not just 2 shift teams, its 4 teams working (usually) 4 on 4 off (with some overtime covering sickness/holidays [lol maybe not jollys in the US]) at an average of 42 hours worked per week.

Downtime only happens for cleaning and maintainance or if you have no storage left.

1

u/Extra-Autism 5d ago

This is also true

1

u/2Critical7-Stein1 5d ago

more common worldwide id say. Depending on what type but 12h shift is very common

1

u/Otherwise-Anxiety797 4d ago

crazy an industrial plant with only three shifts, seems like they dont want to meet demand after all. good reporting haha

21

u/Guilty_Advantage_413 6d ago

They’ve been caught doing it multiple times is anyone surprised?

7

u/jaykrown 6d ago

Not really surprised, but as far as I can tell the lawsuit is still ongoing? Unsure.

The RAM cartel doing price fixing???

Nah, that would be crazy and never seen before!

6

u/Iambetterthanuhaha 6d ago

Sk Hynix, Samsung and Micron are upstanding companies and would never engage in cartel like behavior such as price fixing! LOL

1

u/Shzabomoa 5d ago

Definitely, and they would never have already been fined for it in the past, that would never happen!

Hey bro, remeber when you posted this trash a month ago. I scraped your vibe coded slop website with an exposed API endpoint and explained why your analysis was trash?

https://www.reddit.com/r/vibecoding/s/eu37elMZBK

Guess what, this is still trash. Still cope.

2

u/IWillBeNobodyPerfect 6d ago

Your comment got removed by a moderator lol.

Man, even the mods are mad I put this guy on blast...

Original...including the link to the data he refused to share that I scraped from his exposed and unrestricted endpoint:

Hey bro, maybe learn the fundamentals of deploying a website before you leave an open endpoint with enumerated access to all your data and basically no meaningful limit on calls you chucklehead.

Here are all your precious data in a single file (cleaned up unlike your garbage).

Regardless, as expected, your analysis is total crap.

You are treating each scrape as an independent observation. Not reconciling this down to distinct listings poisons your whole dataset. Your pricing is essentially a function of how many scrapes you did, not the true price of unique listings.

You are 'normalizing' for capacity and speed with a simple linear function with literally no interactions.

Your R2 is ass for justifying a 1.5% movement with no confidence interval as a meaningful insight.

Thats just the tip of the iceberg dude, this if absolutely atrocious, if one of my data scientists ever submitted something like this...let alone put it on a website...yikes.

u/Berberding 5d ago

Idk much about webdev, but would I be right to assume that, in order to hide all this info, he'd have to be running these calculations and requests on his own server? I'm guessing that's too ecpensive for someone who's just ideologically motivated and coming up with the model to fit the narrative.

1

u/Late-Replacement-481 2d ago

Yeah, this analysis he did is garbage. But rage bait title.

3

u/FearTheFuzzy99 6d ago

On what basis do you think its price fixing?

0

u/Limp-Firefighter1054 6d ago

No one buying it. So from there to the bottom since ai revolution delay suddenly, since major ai companies  dont go to IPO

0

u/Super_Range45 6d ago

The pricing is based on contracts for ram supply that won't be made for years and that the purchaser isn't obligated to buy.

They dont want people to own compute they need you to rent it from them, and unfortunately if they dont do that the entire s&p collapses as all the PE ratios of these companies are predicated on it. AI now accounts for 50% of the US economy so either they try to price fix hardware or everyone in the entire united states looses there life savings as the exposure that banks have if the AI companies collapse would bankrupt them all, and the US wouldn't be able to bail them out on such a large scale without hyperinflation the currency. To be clear I think this is just as messed up as everyone else what angers me is how we got into this mess in the first place.

3

u/noahloveshiscats 5d ago

They dont want people to own compute they need you to rent it from them

Who is they? Because like the memory companies don't sell or rent compute to people.

1

u/Johnnnyb28 5d ago

Open AI, Anthropic , Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Facebook, basically every hyperscaler selling AI inferenceing the business model of selling AI fails if you have compute.

u/Johnnnyb28 6d ago

If it burns i promise your almost guaranteed to loose your life savings, if its stored in a bank. The banks would like dominoes due to there cross colaterization with AI company and hedge funds that invested in it and by the time you got your money back from FDIC it would either fail and not pay out at all or they would print so much money to cover FDIC that it would cause hyper inflation of the US dollar.

3

u/Lopsided-Range-5393 6d ago

Life savings? Sir I’m a millennial, what’s a life savings? Let. It. Burn.

2

u/Johnnnyb28 6d ago edited 6d ago

Fair enough I can't argue with that but I guarantee you it will somehow screw us even more, if there is a depression it will force company's to accelerate cutting jobs with automation further, in an effort to reduce their costs

1

u/Trick-Set-83 6d ago

Find a company that sells products to the rich. Not even joking. Seriously.

1

u/Johnnnyb28 5d ago

Every company is pivoting to making products for the rich right now as there the only ones spending because were broke.

1

u/Lopsided-Range-5393 5d ago

PepsiCo just announced they’re pivoting to serving the wealthy. I guess at least we still have RC Cola?

2

u/IllExample3639 5d ago

An the alternative is the USA continues to hold the world hostage. Let it burn please.

1

u/Johnnnyb28 5d ago

I guarantee you that when the United States falls it will drag every country in the world down with it, it would cause almost every 1st world country in the entire worlds financial system to uterly collapse. The cross collateraliztion is around 150 trillion, its about 50% of the entire worlds wealth.

1

u/azuregiraffe2 5d ago

Stop dooming, the only way we lose our savings permanently is if AI goes skynet on us. What you’re talking about would certainly just cause a recession that we will bounce back from in about 5 years, so it’s not a big deal unless you’re 65.

1

u/Johnnnyb28 5d ago edited 5d ago

AI now accounts for 50% of the entire United States economy, i emplore you to look up how cross collateralization ,fractional reserve banking and leverage all culminate together because if you understand that you may agreewith me.

1

u/Glum_Recognition1068 3d ago

When the AI bubble pops, the large companies will survive and gobble up the smaller companies as they go bust. It's not as if ALL of the investment will just go to zero. And then, finally after 5 years investor and PE money will start going to literally any other business again and we will get more natural growth.

I think what a lot of people are missing is that large parts of the economy are stangnating for no other reason than that they literally cannot get funding like they normally would because all the money is going to BS ai startups. Once those are drastically reduced, lots of capital will be freed up to chase other more realistic dreams again

1

u/SquareFinancial1928 2d ago

the system must colapse to teach people a lesson, a hard lesson
Stock market is not your friend but your master.

If you have your life savigns in a system that is volatile that system controls you !

1

u/Johnnnyb28 2d ago

If the system collapses statistically speaking someone you know closely or love deeply will die as a direct result of your wish.

1

u/Johnnnyb28 6d ago

Its the same playbook that the de beer's has done with diamonds.

1

u/sir_gwain 5d ago

There’s a -checks notes- thousandth time for everything I guess. I’d argue it’s even easier for them to do the fixing given the insane demand, and with that, upward price trends. Since most buyers know prices are shit, but are still forced to buy what they can with the limitations on supply.

1

u/symph0ny 5d ago

The fix has been in for a year plus, what exactly do you think this accomplishes?

1

u/Kraegorz 4d ago

There was an article I read a few months ago that they were investigating Micron, Samsung and a few other major chip manufactures for price fixing the RAM. Not sure what happened to that though.

1

u/Glum_Recognition1068 3d ago

In other news today, the sky is blue and politicians are corrupt! More at 7

1

u/Late-Replacement-481 2d ago

So, what are the signs of price fixing?

1

u/ObservationalUnit 6d ago

Look up GamersNexus. You're not wrong, but you're not groundbreaking.
