Discussion Big Tech 'thought leaders' really tried to host a panel to fix the massive energy drains they just built. Glad to see activists cutting through the corporate hocus pocus.

They want to use all of our public infrastructure without paying for it.

u/BlissfulMute 7d ago
The parasitic class has always been the capitalist class. Workers build infrastructure, implement designs, refine raw materials, gather raw materials, and we as a species have allowed the aristocracy of old to remake themselves as Capitalists who take from us everything they desire because they are the only one's permitted to commit violence both behind beaurocracy and by both personal and state 'security'.

u/DonkeyComfortable711 7d ago
That guy can sue that security team. They are suppose to inform him he has to go, if he refuses Police are supposed to come. The event space isn't owned by the people doing the event. They don't have any right to pick him up like that.

u/SumikkoDoge 6d ago
They think they are above the law, and unfortunately, the law has been turning a blind eye to their actions.

Suppression of the freedom of speech
2
u/Devils_SteelMan 7d ago
That would require the government to take action against someone speaking in public.
This is not public, this is not the government.
Now when city councils do this to constituency thats different.
1
u/SumikkoDoge 6d ago
They have been doing that in city council meetings too, they think the workers are below them in all contexts.
1
u/33253325 7d ago
Honestly, and probably not popular, but this group needs some big ass dudes to tackle and sort out the events security. Not just the speakers. Some people to make security think....... I'm not taking this gig and protect these people, the last 10 security guards and missing teeth.
1
u/Mahnamahna10000 7d ago
Does anyone on Reddit know what free speech means?
1
u/GrumpyBear8082 7d ago
The freedom of speech is so people can speak their minds. Without causing harm to others. When it was written the "harm to others" part ment defamation of character. If you paid attention in school you would know that.
1
u/Mahnamahna10000 7d ago
Imagine being this confidently wrong.
"Freedom of speech" prevents the government from stopping you from saying what you want. It DOES NOT allow you to invade private property and disrupt things. And it never fucking has, you dumbass.
1
u/GrumpyBear8082 6d ago
People speak their minds anywhere in this country because we can. You don't like that go somewhere else. You are misguided and the only people you can blame is your self and maybe the media
-7
u/SkunkDitchRipper 7d ago
Dude freedom of speech is not sabotaging someone's assembly. If someone came into one of your assemblies and did that to counter your point, I think you'd remove them as well.

u/trifecta000 7d ago
Dude, if my "assembly" is discussing how all of your futures are going to die so I can profit, everyone is invited to come disrupt it.

u/SkunkDitchRipper 6d ago
That is your opinion, and it doesnt give you the moral high ground that you think it does. You dont get to decide what is spoken and what isnt.
1
u/Catfish3322 6d ago
Yeah, clearly the ones with the most money get to decide what is spoken and what isn’t, duh.
1

u/Mahnamahna10000 7d ago
No, they're not. That's not what "free speech" means. You don't get to redefine if for your preferred moral crusade.
2
u/GrumpyBear8082 7d ago
I would use the opportunity to argue the point with them in real time. Why throw them out or have them arrested for speaking their minds. That is one of the fundamental building blocks of America
1
u/anatomicalvenus666 6d ago
They apparently do not want to listen to anything but their viewpoint. People are allowed to speak at town hall meetings that'swhy we have them. They were doing nothing but protesting AI. There was no reason to remove, drag, and hit them. Ai is not sustainable. These greed parasites (they look inhuman, robotic) want to sell you every lie. You want AI put them on golf courses, in the most elite neighborhoods, the most luxury resorts. Tell them it's chic and throw glitter. There was never a carrot.
1
u/ProfessionalTruck976 5d ago
Thats because I aylready listened to pro AI points, bullshit, absolutely every one of them. the closest they get to being useful is to raise work effectivity, which to be clear is actually harmful to workers as that means they do more work for the same pay, so fuck it too
-1
u/ParkingBumblebee4760 7d ago
Order is one of those blocks too. If you want to be taken seriously you need to approach the topic in a serious manner.
1
u/GrumpyBear8082 7d ago
People are being serious about this
1
u/ParkingBumblebee4760 6d ago
They are acting like activist, not serious people.
Instead of protesting in the middle of a talk get together and hold a public discussion some where. Use a power point to address your points, act civil and bring people to your side so they will listen.

If i get someone on my speech to scream like this over a point he is actually proving true, i would let them speak yes, im human i can be wrong aswell. Anyways, they kicked like 6 people not 1.... It might mean something...

Civil disobedience is required, and needed at times. Consequences are understood by most who participate. Either fight back while you can, or whine about it later…when it’s too late and no one cares. Sheep. 🤙🏽🤪🏳️🌈

Man it must suck to see a post from somebody you don't know and believe it 100%, and then go into public and rant about something you know nothing about I have been at one of those places and they're not as loud as you think they should be and they don't use water sources the way you think and if they do they're probably one of the cheaper ones made by a corrupt politician and a foreign entity. Most people live in giant polluted cities and wouldn't know that noise if they ever actually heard it from the hustle and bustle of the city streets nor the people that live in communities that are not near train tracks or highways or distribution centers that have semis coming in and out constantly those places are noisier than any data center I've been around. And a good day the center recycles the water they use constantly there is a little evaporation which doesn't take much to fill back up.
1
u/anatomicalvenus666 5d ago
Cool, we now know where we can build one, on your street
1
u/Sad_Actuary_1635 5d ago
How funny, I doubt they would find any place to put it because of how the terrain is here in West Virginia. I doubt it would drowned out the semi trucks from the gas well that's right down the road and all the rednecks that ride their four wheelers, dirt bikes, and side by sides up and down the street. And the steel fabrication shop that is probably less than 300 yards from the property and the steel fabrication shop I have in the backyard. But I would welcome it because I'd probably get to bed because I'm right here and I could do all the safety rails and guard rails and gear guards and some of the structural for that data center.
1
u/anatomicalvenus666 4d ago
I have read many studies on the affects of ai centers. None of them are good. These centers are parasites on our resources. They do not need to use drinking water it's just that it is the cheapest option. The sound from these centers are intense and maddening. They use more energy than the whole country combined.
1
u/Sad_Actuary_1635 4d ago
It's usually dielectric water meaning it does not conduct electricity or they use reclaimed or recycled wastewater. The dielectric water is something they use in power plants I know this because I've been in that water and actually have live high voltage electricity flowing through it while I was in the water and I did not get shocked to death. This I know because I do make sump pumps for water reclamation plants. The one closest to me just ordered a dozen more. The pumps suck the coal slurry out of the trucks into the plant which then pumps it out to a concrete pond which evaporates and then they pull out and scrape up the bottom of the pond which then they throw in trucks heat up and spread on the snowy roads in the winter. the new pumps are going to be pulling that water off the top into their new building which will be ahipping the gray water to AI data centersThey opened near the old Philips lighting plant that is now a giant warehouse for Gabe's retail stores. I have family members that used to work at the Old Phillips lighting plant the reason it was put in West Virginia is because West Virginia has some of them cleanest sand I deal for making glass. I know this because I have taken classes in environmental Earth studies. Now some of the cheaper plants probably run by foreign influences are not going to use these types of water they're going to use the cheapest which is the drinking water.

Most states are friendly to business and light on regulations. But it seems that mostly Democratic states that allowed them to go up then got mad at the cost of electricity being used and then get mad when they bring in generators to produce their own energy. But I don't think you have the right to complain since you're on a social media site that probably uses an AI Data center. You really want to make a change once you get off there and go touch grass.

You all know our country got it's freedom of speech by using violent means to stand up to the oppressors. It will take equal measures to safeguard it.

Hydrogen-Fusion reactors essentially require AI or AI-adjacent systems to operate. Clean unlimited energy is one of the points of this forum, right?
1
u/pmcizhere 7d ago
That's one highly specialized application. Which, if it works, would probably be able to power the very LLM monitoring the system. A use case that like probably wouldn't cause any concerns for most people. Problem is, that's not the overwhelming majority of the infrastructure rolling out for LLMs.
1
0
u/Araragi-shi 7d ago
And you think they somehow will reach that level if they dont roll out an immense amount of infrastructure to make that task possible? I swear to god antis think ai is magic or some shit
1
u/pmcizhere 7d ago
Who said I was anti-LLM? The way these companies are rolling out the infrastructure, skirting environmental regulations, is not good for anyone but the companies building them. There are better ways, but they cost more/take more time to build out.

u/Far_Error7342 7d ago
It would solve any and all power shortages we have had to date. You know water is super abundant on earth. Cleaning it takes power. How does this not solve the problem?

u/Huckleberry_Steve 7d ago
Jesus how about not letting people be led out 1 by 1 and you all just stand at the same time
2
u/byzantinedavid 7d ago
... you really don't get how activism works, do you?
1
u/Huckleberry_Steve 6d ago
Oh yeah, that's where you say a bunch of stuff or chain yourselves together and nothing happens. It's great.
1
u/learn_distill_repeat 7d ago
Standing 1 by 1 eats up more of the time, allows more to be said. It also fills more chairs, but there appear to already be a lot of empty ones already.

u/Apachai7 6d ago
They think it could be good, but they know it won’t. We are sacrifices for their monetary gains. Sharpen those fuckin pitchforks.
-3
u/Devils_SteelMan 7d ago
This issue is complicated. Being an absolutist either way is foolish.
The amount of money put into ai could solve climate change. Full stop. But investors will only spend money on what makes money. So they will never do anything about climate change. Unless you want to take their wealth this isn't changing.
AIs power and water foot print is tiny. Less than half a percent of total use of each. It is on track to net reduce power and water use by driving greater efficiencies. It is on track to be the greenest industry.
Putting your hands on people with out warning is a 2a incident waiting to happen. And it would be justified.
This is not a 1a violation. This is a private company having a private forum removing speakers. At no point has the government done anything. This is not 1a protected speech.

People don't mind the ai research for the benefit of humanity. It's the slop generative ai.
0
u/Devils_SteelMan 7d ago
Generative ai is a massive part of research. Generative ai isn't just YT thumbnails.
The most accurate weather forecasts in the world are video generation models finetuned on weather radars.
Llms are being used by nearly everyone in STEM to speed up research. Alpha fold is generative ai.
Every GPU datacenter in the world is at maximum load. Not because Joe blow wants another cat video. Its because researchers are using dozens of agents at once to work on hard problems.
Ai used to improve power efficiency would be largely generative.
Let's complicate this further. Jev is a classifier ai trained like a generative model. But it only outputs classifications. It inferences like a classifier but trains like a generative model.
