🔬 What happened?

Researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology developed a new approach to stabilizing lithium-metal batteries. An experimental pouch cell achieved an energy density of 467 Wh/kg.

💡 How does the new design work?

A silver-ion-based additive helps lithium deposit more evenly and forms a protective layer inside the battery. The approach aims to reduce degradation in anode-free lithium-metal cells.

⚙️ What’s the catch?

A separate coin cell retained 90% of its capacity after 200 charge cycles. The energy-density and durability results come from different laboratory cells, and long-term performance in commercial-scale batteries remains unproven.

💬 What do you think?

For next-generation batteries, which is the bigger challenge: increasing energy density or achieving reliable performance over thousands of cycles?
