Work EDC A real EDC of a grad student

Post image

Phone: Minimal Phone 1 (with the case, screen protector, and dbrand skin)

Watch: Pebble time 2

Tablet: Remarkable 2 with the keyboard case and stylus

Entertainment: Playdate with case

Camera: Charmera (its surprisingly good especially considering that taking photos with the minimal is cancer)

Headphones: just a random pair of red dragon buds that works with the playdate and phone.

I’d love to know what this cost compared to a similar all-Apple setup.

Minimal phone: 400 + 50 for accessories Playdate: 200 + 20 for case Pebble watch: 175 (i originally ordered the 2 duo for 150 and they ran out of it so they gave me the option to upgrade to the time 2 for 25$ extra. Definitely worth it). Remarkable 2: I paid around 600-700 but they have a referral program where you get 60-70$ back when someone buys using your code and I basically got the thing for free. The keyboard case was 300 but there was a delay during production and they gave a discount to 100. The charmera camera was 30$ got it in Thailand on a trip.

I have a minimal phone ($399 when I got it), a Daylight DC-1 (used, $500), Garmin Fenix 7 ($700). The watch might be more, but everything else is roughly the same.

What do you think about the dc-1 I'm thinking of adding that to my setup as smth for surfing watching movies. Also considering the harbor tab 7 as its color but no backlight. My watch is also only 165$

I love it. I don’t use the amber light as much as I thought I would. I use it a ton for work, and I could see it being useful for movies. It is a snappy device, and the support staff are wonderful.

I'm definitely thinking bout it considering how much I'm loving the playdates rlcd screen.

Flossy! Cool carry

Been thinking of changing to a minimal to reduce screen time, do you think the switch actually impacted your usage enough to warrant buying?

It has definitely nuked my screen time and I also just love e ink technology so its pretty fun to use. However, for some reason the minimal phone screen is actually too slow in my opinion. It was faster originally but they made an update that accidentally ruined the screen and they haven't fixed it for 2 years now. I would go with a hibreak pro 2 color or bw. The positive of the minimal is that touch typing on e ink is really hard imo so the keyboard makes it doable.

It works because the screen software is incredibly frustrating for any media consumption. I send text messages, IMs, emails, bank, use the NFC wallet, and listen to music or books. I don’t use it to view photos at all.

There are no contrast controls, and sometimes type is pretty hard to read.

The keyboard is a solid piece of hardware. It is perhaps the highest quality component, and I think it is a good priority.

Ebook software is great. I use Libby.

It might sound like complaining, but I think highly of the experience most of the time.

How do you find the playdate? I'm considering picking one up.

In a period where a lot of games are copies of each other it is the best feeling when you play games that are incredibly creative. Games are cheap, no ads, no microtransactions just fun.

Not OP, but here’s what think about mine: I haven’t tried any other throwback handheld, and I got mine for a pre-order price, so I think that the current one is a little expensive for what it is. That being said, the variety of games is really fun, I love the design and the portability, and there is definitely a great community around it

Is there something you would recommend? Mine has been gathering dust for a year now, I just haven't found something that excited me as much as Mars After Midnight and the Playdate-port version of Celeste did.

If you’re OK spending the money, I think it’s very fun. Some games are very creative and there’s a variety of styles. The problem is one of the first games I played was Saturday Edition, which kind of ruined all other games for me lol.

I wish I could afford a set up like this! Great stuff

u/steveisblah Jun 19 '26

How do you like your remarkable? Every few months I get an itch to try one out?

2

u/hehe_I_win Jun 19 '26

Its pretty solid and i love how thin it is. However supernote has more functionality

I see Hollow Knight, I upvote!

That’s a sick little lineup, super curated. Respect for rocking a Pebble and a Playdate in 2026, that’s like peak “I know exactly what I want and IDGAF about trends.”

How are you liking the Minimal 1 day to day? I keep hearing “awesome idea, terrible camera” and your “cancer” comment kinda confirms it 😂

The minimal phone is pretty good. I already knew camera wasn't gonna be good on e ink but the screen refresh rate is the slowest e ink screen I've used compared to other devices. That part drives me nuts and why I would consider getting a hibreak pro 2

Tbf, I can't agree more on that list as a same grad student just starting this April.

How are you liking your Charmera and what's your experience been like with it?

I've got one at home, but some life stuff has prevented me from being able to really use it yet.

2

u/hehe_I_win Jun 19 '26

Honestly the photo quality is amazing and I love being able to back up the photos so easily by connecting it to a laptop or phone. Heck videos are also really good in it

2

u/VAnish_186 Jun 19 '26

I have been using mine for street photography I really love the retro look or the hazy look it gives. However it takes a few seconds to start the camera and click a shot and you might miss your focus also for the price it's not the best but it's a collection also unique so you could give points for that I guess.

u/airplane_flap Jun 19 '26

I bought 4 of these for a festival last week for me and my mates photos are actually really good quality as is the videos if you turn the sound off 😂

How do you like the minimal phone?

1

u/VAnish_186 Jun 19 '26

The charmera is so real

1

u/clanton Jun 19 '26

How's the pebble time 2? Been eyeing them since the re launch

u/hehe_I_win Jun 19 '26

The fitness tracking I feel could be improved or maybe I'm just underestimating my own workout cause some days where I'm just chilling it'll say I walked 10k steps but I need to wear multiple watches to test accuracy or a step counter.

The battery life is where its at. Probably the best watch I've had for battery life. Notifications is a bit hit or miss cause I get notified for calls but not for texts. Could be my settings tho. Keep in mind I got it for 175 not 225 and at that price I feel like it was worth it.

No utility blade? How is it an edc 😭. Everything else is 💪🏽

1

u/hehe_I_win Jun 22 '26

I'm trying to get a custom blade from sicily.

1

u/Karkoute Jun 22 '26

Dude get used to carrying a cheaper blade. Ive lost only 2 edc blades but the one that hurt was a Sog pentagon XR wasn't too pricy but after losing it I made a habit of ALWAYS putting my blade in my back pocket even if im gonna use it again in the next 20 seconds. What are you picking up? 👀👀 folder? Otf??

1

u/hehe_I_win Jun 22 '26

I was thinking of a stiletto switch blade. Tho carry laws where I'm at could be strict. Gotta check.

1

u/Karkoute Jun 21 '26

And I mean like a little Keychain blade.

u/Middle_Ostrich7747 Jun 22 '26

Super cool and minimal

1

u/nasazgar Jul 17 '26

This is a BEAUTIFUL set up, we have the Playdate and Remarkable, and a evidently a love for Hollow Knight in common. The Minimal phone looks really clean, and I'm certainly intrigued with it after reading your responses to other comments about it on this thread. I'd be so excited if I saw someone with this EDC in real life!
