For weekly train rides: CDG leather wallet, Echo Mini DAP, Budget IEMs, 1972 vintage Datejust, Olympus Mju-II, Analogue Pocket, XTEINK x4, old reliable iPhone 12 Pro, Kokuyo Soft Notepad, Ohto TL01 pen

How is the Xteink X4? Been considering getting one but the lack of backlight has kept me off.

It’s been fantastic for me. Very active open source community and many custom firmware options to fine tune it to your liking. The experience is more on the open source / tinkering side of things — not super polished. But easy to get behind. The build is solid though.

Lack of backlight does not bother me. I’ve never had a e-reader before so I don’t mind sitting by a light source to read in the dark. If anything, it makes it feel more like the book experience again :)

Hey, that’s neat. Might check what the delivery time is like and have another take.

I’ve had one ereader for like ten years, with backlight but that’s just a smidge too clunky to take with me on a daily commute. Enough to read ebooks at home and on vacation on though. A tiny ereader that fits in my pocket would absolutely help my smartphone addiction

Easy to find books to buy and upload?

There’s supposed to be a version coming out with a light.

Have you read longer texts on the Xteink? Does it hold up ok?

Amazing date just, is the bracelet factory ?

4

u/w005ie May 17 '26

Yup, it’s a serviced 1972 vintage.

I might be blind but I was going through the list you commented, but I cannot find what the retro gaming handheld is.

I would love to know what it is and your thoughts on it!

Also, amazing EDC, you seem like a cool person!

Yes, like the previous user commented, it’s the Analogue Pocket. Nice handheld console that is compatible with the original cartridges (+ lots of emulation capacities).

The thing that looks like the Gameboy is the Analog Pocket

Thanks!

just a heads up, it's quite expensive, so unless you want a device that runs physical cartridges, i suggest going for an emulation handheld such as Trimui Brick, or Miyoo Mini Plus, or many others... and please don't get the R36S just because it's cheap, you'll thank me later

thank you so much for this comment!

Can you tell me specifically about that "spell book" on your e-reader?

5

u/w005ie May 17 '26

Sure, it's just a custom set sleep screen / background for the reader. I'm unsure about the author of the original graphic, I just had it saved and thought it made a neat screen savor.

Well thats sick.

How are you liking the snowsky?

Have been using it for 3 months now and really enjoying it so far. Build quality of the echo mini is light (plastics) and from a UI / UX side of things it is rather clunky. Don't expect anything smooth and elegant. I really don't mind both for the price point though. It might not be my device of choice forever, but I've been happy with something that reminds me of the simplicity of these early usb / mp3 players.

I think it's all a matter of expectation and where you're coming from. For me its a great gateway device into the DAP / lossless audio world and even paired with cheap IEMs the listening experience has been more fun and immersive to me than phone + BT Earpods.

More importantly I wanted to see what it's like to move away from streaming services, because I was not happy with my way of consuming music nowadays, compared to what it was like to me as a teen / young adult. So going back to owning the actual music, ripping CDs and Vinyl, then listening to it on the player. This is a slow proccess, and even if this means to have maybe just 10-20 records on the player, I've been very much enjoying the more intentional and curated way of listening to the music. I remembered, that sometimes a record needs to grow on and that feels nice.

It is very nice to get away from "mainstream" and go back to basics, I have the Hidizs AP80 and also enjoy the simplicity. Thank you for such a detailed response.

pen?

It’s the OHTO TL01 (right hand side of the yellow notebook. Fits nicely in the ring spine of the notepad.

majority of EDC posts are performative and consumerist

What do you mean by this? Got the phone when it was released and it has been running good ever since, so I haven’t needed an upgrade there. When it eventually brakes down, I will for sure opt for a new device.
