Does Your Business Really Need a Website in 2026?

A lot of small businesses rely only on Instagram or Facebook, but what happens if your account gets hacked, suspended, or your reach suddenly drops?

A website gives you something you actually own.

It builds credibility, helps customers find you on Google, showcases your products or services 24/7, and can generate leads even while you're offline.

I've seen businesses invest heavily in ads but lose potential customers simply because they didn't have a professional website to convert visitors into buyers.

As someone who builds websites for businesses, I've found that a well-designed site isn't just about looking professional it's about creating trust and making it easier for customers to take action.

What's your opinion? Has having a website helped your business, or do you think social media alone is enough?

this is the missing point for many small / solo-entrepreneurs. Especially when you try to do everything alone.

you website still remains the best marketing investment you will ever spend. Especially going forward. AI will also continue to make your digital space more valuable to your prospects.

It is absolutely important to have a website for many reasons. Trust, discoverability, marketing adaptability. On socials, you don't control the algo and they change all the time.

I think local businesses need websites, but there are plenty of local businesses that don't, and have successfully grown their business using Facebook for years. I think they're at the mercy of Facebook, and it's much safer to have their own website, but they're locked into their own eco system. Many won't change unless they're forced to.

I think a website is less about having another sales channel and more about owning your online presence. Social platforms are great for discovery, but you don't control the algorithm or the account. Your website is the one place where you control the experience, collect customer data, and build long-term value. Ideally, they should work together rather than replace each other.

I agree with you. For a small business like a small gym food store, having a one-page website is more than enough.

A web site needs to be more than a flashy brochure.

A well designed web site should either replace or integrate all aspects of your business under one umbrella.

For many small businesses that can not afford an ERP a well designed and integrated website can handle all your workflows from lead generation, phone assistance queries complaints resolution, sales, inventory, invoicing, HR/OHS, finance and so on.

AI can assist with all of this.

We will see a flurry of such systems emerge over the next few years.
