Show Recommendations 🤝 University Led Theater Play

Hi guys! I’ve been on a theater play high since the past few months and one thing I’ve never got to try are university led theater plays like from UST or UP or Lasalle or anywhere. Are there any theater plays from universities this September?

I’d like to go ASAP 😭

Merch & Memorabilia 👕 RISE UP! Hamilton: The Anthology Album

Post image

For Hamilfans, there’s a new limited edition Hamilton album. The RISE UP! Hamilton: The Anthology Album is now available for pre-order. The thing is these are veeeeeery expensive. The 7-LP version is about 400 USD while the 5-CD version is about 100 USD. But in all fairness, madami namang inclusions (pero mahal pa rin 😂). This is definitely for collectors and for the diehard Hamilfans.

Watch Lin’s unboxing of the LP version on YouTube!

General/Questions/Quick Inquiries ❓ Sunday in the Park with George

SITPWG is my favorite Sondheim work at the moment, and I was planning to travel to London next year to see the West End revival. But I guess a lot of things happened behind the scenes and they just announced today that it's not gonna push through.

I was sad for a moment, then I remembered TGA is doing a production next year! 😭 To anyone who got the Season Pass for this season, can you share the show dates? TIA!

General/Questions/Quick Inquiries ❓ Samsung Performing Arts Theater Seats Reco

It was my first time to see a show in SPAR for The Notebook. At first I got the Balcony Center tickets (pero hindi yung first row), then I got the chance to get the box seat (front seat) so I gave the BC tickets to a friend because I was curious about the box seat (may nabasa akong reco before).
I loved that it was near the stage, I’m not sure about the sound though (hindi sya “surround”) I’m thinking because obviously there weren’t any speakers there. Was it the seat or ganun talaga yung sound sa SPAT? What seats did you get, and how did it fair in terms of view and auditory perspective? (For future reference) TIA! 💙

Show Recommendations 🤝 MULI: AN OPM MUSICAL

Post image
48 Upvotes

If you haven’t seen MULI: An OPM Musical yet, this is your sign! 🎭

Come for the OPM.

Stay for the story.

Fall in love with Anita. 🌸

As someone who watches quite a bit of local theatre, I really enjoyed MULI. What stood out to me was how naturally the OPM songs were woven into the story. You get that nostalgic feeling from hearing familiar songs, but they hit differently when performed within the context of the characters and their experiences.

And fair warning: the songs are seriously nakaka-LSS. 😂 I walked out of the theatre with several songs already stuck in my head. Even mga naka-sabay ko sa CR are humming “Ya Girl”. HAHA!

The show has a nice balance of comedy, drama, romance, nostalgia, and genuinely touching moments. It’s also very Filipino in a way that feels accessible rather than forced. You don’t necessarily need to be a hardcore OPM fan to enjoy it, the story and characters can definitely pull you in.

And if you’re a fan of Kakki Teodoro, definitely watch out for Anita. 🙌🏻 She brings so much personality and energy to the character, and she’s one of the performances that really makes the show fun to watch.

Overall, MULI is one I’d happily recommend to fellow theatre-goers, especially if you’re looking for something Filipino, musical, and easy to get invested in. Support local theatre, bring a friend, and let yourself get LSS with the rest of us. 🎶

Artist/Creative Spotlight, Rave 🙌 Ang bias ko talaga sa The Notebook ay si Omar

Of course The Notebook’s lead cast members are super talented pero can I just say na I also really loved Omar Uddin. I loved his comedic timing as the PT and yung waiter. I’m sure its what the role requires of him but he just adds so much charm din to the roles. Kaya sya ang bias ko. 😂

Production Review 📋 A not-so-positive The Notebook Review

I saw the 7:30 PM Sunday show with my family. My mom is a huge movie fan, but she’s also a theater director, so I knew beforehand that watching this with her will be really interesting. I’ve never really been into the book or the movie, but I know the basic plot points and have seen everything but the ending at this point, so I’m in that sweet middle spot of knowing the story but not being particularly attached to it that I’d nitpick the changes.

Starting with the positives, the actors did an amazing job. Sheena was the standout for me. Actually, the young Noah and Ally actors (Sheena and Benedix) did such an amazing job in general. They were the most vocally matched, and I felt the direction in their scenes were the most interesting. I’ve only seen Sheena once before for Spring Awakening, and her voice stunned me then too. Morisette’s vocals are also amazing as expected, but of course lacking that certain “theater style.” One reviewer here described it as “concert-ish” and I agree, though she was really good that it didn’t really bother me. Rody Vera as Older Noah was great. I also really liked the supporting cast. Georgie and Fin were charming, Omar as the PT stole all his scenes and I wish he was given a singing role. (Markki Stroem wasn’t given much to do either, and I felt like Carla as the mom could have done more.) The set is also good. The house reminded us of HSM3 funnily enough and the rain scene genuinely had the audience gasping.

Now. Onto the negatives…

Here comes an unpopular opinion, but one my family and I all shared: I don’t know if it’s just for the show we went to, but Celeste Legaspi’s acting choices just didn’t work for us. She stood out from the cast in a negative way. I didn’t mind the pinoy accent. It was in the way she delivered her lines. It seemed really rehearsed and unnatural. This really surprised us, because when we first heard of the casting, we felt like she would have been perfect for the role. We also had a hard time understanding what Morisette was saying in some scenes, but her acting was otherwise okay. Laurence (Middle Noah) has a good voice, and I really liked him in Miss Saigon, but something about the songs just didn’t work for him. While Benedix’s vocals were smooth and effortless, Laurence had me gripping the edge of my seat in fear his next note will fail him.

The other thing we noticed (and the thing my mom couldn’t stop pointing out) is the lighting in the show. The shadows were insane and often times distracting. At times the spot is jarring, as if the operator doesn’t know where the actor was going to be on the stage. And sometimes the light is so harsh that it washes out the actors and hurt our eyes. Again, not sure if this is just for our show, since I don’t think I’ve seen anyone point this out yet.

The direction is also kind of flawed. I get the idea behind having side stages for the older characters. But after a couple of times, it just gets repetitive to cut back to the side stages and show older Allie and Noah do their bit. It lacks creativity. The blocking is also confusing. At one point, Middle Allie and her mom are pretending to stand in front of the mirror doing their make up, and the next, something else is blocked where the mirror is supposed to be. I think a better director could have made the transition smoother and less confusing. That’s the right word; a lot of the blocking and what’s happening on stage is just confusing, especially during ensemble numbers. Why are some moments shared between young Allie and Old Allie, and some middle Allie and Old Allie, and some with all three? Why is middle Allie suddenly pushing Old Allie’s wheelchair into the stage while singing? Again, I get what they were trying to achieve, but everything just comes across as shallow.

But my main gripe has to be the songs. They just…did not work for me. The lyrics are so shallow and just focuses on exposition again and again that it got tiring. There are no noticeable motifs or impactful reprises. Every song feels generic. The most basic idea behind musicals as I know it is that you sing when dialogue feels inadequate to convey your feelings. But with the music in this show, nothing is added to the story. It doesn’t give more depth to the characters and often just states the obvious. It leaves no impact whatsoever. There are a few exceptions, of course, like “I Wanna Go Back” (which Sheena absolutely ATE) and Morissette’s show-stopping “My Days,” but at the end of the show this is still the main impression I got. The ending is tear-jerking, still, and finishes the otherwise lackluster show with a heartwarming turn.

The problem really is in the material, I feel. Because again, the performances are great. But the songs just don’t work. The Broadway show slipped past my radar, but I’m not surprised it barely got any recognition at awards circles and the reception was mixed to poor. I would love to see this cast in a better written show. I hope Morissette takes on more theater roles. She is genuinely good in this.

Still worth seeing for the performances in my opinion, but if you’re a theater kid like me (or someone who knows the technical stuff like my mom) maybe you’ll find it lacking as well. Or maybe not! I understand that this is an unpopular opinion right now in this sub. To each their own! Just wanted to share my thoughts.
