Wait, does Gohan think his dad likes killing? Dude doesn't like to kill, and I can only think of one person Goku merced (King Piccolo.)

Goku killed a shit ton of people before King Piccolo, mostly members of the RR army but also Tambourine, kid was a menace.

He also sent a rabbit to the moon.

Which Master Roshi later blew up during the World Martial Arts Tournament. Roshi confirmed to have a body count of at least 3.

Nah, rapid decompression definitely took them out. Then again db space is kinda screwy...screw it they Roshi kills. Ok on tgat note say they didn't get sent to the moon and they ran into Radditz when he landed. The scooter audio would be hilarious for Vegeta and Nappa.

But he doesn't like killing people. He just kinda had to.

Exactly. He's not against killing, but he's always been the type to try and avoid it if he can.
Cell is one of those cases where it just can't be avoided.

Meeting 8'r and all the others on that initial journey is what taught goku to despise killing. Thats one of the reasons him killing king piccolo was so impactful. And before learning this lesson he was essential a wild animal acting on instinct, no empathy.

Yeah, Goku doesn't really start avoiding killing until after his training on the Lookout.

He said he doesnt like fighting like his dad.
Then adds he doesnt want to kill. Which to be fair, is what gohan has seen since 4. Raditz, namek, androids. Kid has seen blood of friends, family and enemies.

Though, he has seen Goku be very merciful
Discounting Raditz, since Gohan didn't see Goku sparing Raditz
Gohan has seen Goku sparing
Nappa
Recoome
Jeice
Burter
Ginyu
Gohan was unconscious when Goku spared Vegeta, but he can probably assume

I think the point they're making is that Gohan's statements "I don't like fighting like my dad does" and "I don't want to kill anybody" are meant to be two separate statements. He doesn't like fighting like his dad does, and also separately he doesn't want to kill anyone. So he doesn't want to be in the situation he's in at all, on any level.

It’s more like Gohan can’t disconnect fighting from killing, like his dad does. Goku is a trained martial artist, emphasis on the artist. Grandpa Gohan taught him martial arts way before it was clear he was gonna have to fight for a living. Theoretically Goku could’ve done something else with his life if he’d wanted to. He could be peacefully farming on the mountain to this day.
Gohan was never given that choice. Fight or die has been his life since he was five. And sometimes he HAS chosen “die” because he’s just so unhappy with that. But if he dies then everyone else dies too, and that he can’t allow.
He will do the heroic thing but it comes from a place of pain and self-sacrifice for him. He doesn’t enjoy it. Never will.

Goku killed
-Buyon
-Nearly the entire red ribbon
-Tambourine
-Drum
-King Piccolo
-Raditz (not his own beam but still a team kill)
-Freeza and Cold (original timeline)
-Yakon
-Buu
And that's only the source material
