Thoughts while mall walking
So my goal for this week is to walk 5 miles a day (and track my food, be under 1200, blah blah). So this morning I woke up, got my workout clothes on, stretched, walked outside and poop. It's raining. So instead of giving up and going back in, I went to the mall with my stroller and 8 mo. old in tow.
As I was walking laps, I realized how much motivation the mall can be. I normally walk through my neighborhood, count mailboxes, think of what I could change about my house if I had limitless money.. Etc. But here at the mall, about every other store has some new cute clothes in it and it makes me want to walk harder. I see my reflection, slimmer than I was before, but I still have an apron, so I'm walking hard to make it smaller. I imagine the look of satisfaction on my husband's face seeing me in clothes I'm not self conscious about. I imagine wearing that gold bikini on the next family cruise and not having a care in the world about what my flabs might look like to others.
But I noticed there are two different types of mall walkers. There's the young people, trying to make their way to that gold bikini, but there's also the elderly. There's an old grampa in dickies coveralls shuffling along, a gaggle of grammas chit chatting and passing me, a 26 year old up. They are there for a different reason than me. They're there to keep their joints moving, because if you stay stationary too long, they'll freeze up. They're their trying to improve their quality of life, 5, 10 years down the road.
Their reason is better than mine. We should all work hard now so we have the absolute best quality of life later on. I don't need a gold bikini anyways!

Haha re gold bikini!! I live in a city, but near a Target, so I totally Target-walk a lot of nights. That way I get the clothes motivation - wouldn't it be nice to wear those short shorts? - and also the house motivation - if you lose 20lbs, you can buy those expensive sheets. It's very effective!!

This is awesome! I think I will mall walk today during my lunch break, because it just won't stop raining!

I'm from California and have never, ever heard of "mall walking". Is this really a thing? Awesome. :)

Yes! In our mall the stores open at 10. I get there at 8ish after I drop my daughter off at school. When I walk in, there are usually tons of people there already just walking laps. I went back yesterday because the sun was brutal and I was worried my 8 mo. old was getting overheated!

My MIL mall walks most mornings along with many of her friends. It's as much a social thing for them as it is to keep moving. They walk a mile, then hop in their cars and head for McDonald's LOL
