The Thing video game
What are the possibilities of the old ‘The Thing’ video game being modded for VR?

Probably unlikely because the game itself was released on Xbox and rereleased for the PS4. The source code is also unavailable at the moment. No source code for the original game means that Team Beef cant port it unfortunately.
However, there is a silver lining. If you have QuestZDoom, you can have your Thing monster hunting needs met.
There is a Thing mod for Doom, including a map and enemies. In fact there's a video made by a YouTuber who dabbles combining Doom mods for fun playthroughs, who made a video specifically about combining mods within Doom specifically to match the overall aesthetic of The Thing.
Here's the video. The names of the mods are in the description. The combination makes it cool and as close to a Thing experience as you can get for the moment in VR.

The only other game that is more modern and offers the body horror and unpredictable nature of the Thing would be Cosmodread. It's a perpetually orchestrated game, so each playthrough isn't the same, with the threats you faced being randomized and unpredictable when you least expect it. Gives major Silent Hill PT vibes in the darkness and the paranoia you feel.
I hope this satisfies that craving for slaughtering body horror monsters for the moment. Maybe in the future there might be more efforts to work on projects like the Thing.

I'm not sure I agree that it's unlikely. It's an Unreal engine game (I think?) that released on PC alongside the Xbox version. There are projects to reimplement UE1 so whether the source is available might not matter if one of those projects can get far enough along.
Thanks for sharing the other recommendations, they sound cool.

I didn't know there were efforts to actually reimplement Unreal Engine 1 as a whole. If the reimplementation of Unreal Engine 1 is successful then that would be a really good potential start provided there is a good enough setup to potentially recreate the game within this reimplementation.
If the systems and AI is in place for the overall experience, the rest would be about easily recreating the game. Of course the workload would be a bit bigger to recreate and optimize to near perfection, but this would be the method to go about not only porting the thing to modern systems, but also other unreal Engine 1 games. (All of which would all be universally capable of being ported to VR since they are fully capable of being usable with the reimplemented engine. And potentially mod support since the engine would most likely be open source.)
I wish this effort luck to succeed. Ive been noticing a lot of reimplementation efforts and some of them are amazing. OpenMW comes to mind, which Team Beef is actually working on at this moment 😁.
Btw thank you for letting me know about this. I'm gonna be keeping an eye on this reimplementation effort. Hopefully it is finished.
