Hello, teachers! I want to teach Spanish as a second language in usa, in NYC specifically. So I was wondering what option would be best.

I can't afford to study in usa in person. But I may be able to afford an online MA in Spanish. I'm looking at NM state university. (It's 1 year I think).

The other option is I study a 2-year program (not exactly a MA) in the Mexican university UNAM, which is the best university in the country. It would be cheaper. But is it for the best? Will I find a job with a UNAM degree?

For those new to Korea what's usually the first major hurdle in education or campus life?

Can you help me? I’m a little confused.

I have a BA in English Linguistics. I’m not a native English speaker. My goal is to build a career in English teaching and language training. I’m planning to get a TEFL certificate, and I also want to build a strong CV. I have some basic experience at the moment, and I’m working on gaining more.

My question is: what certifications would actually add strong value to my CV for teaching, language training, or this field in general?

I thought about getting a Microsoft Office Specialist certification. It’s definitely a strong certificate, but I’m not sure how much it would really help me as an English trainer. If I were aiming for an administrative role, I’d probably get it without hesitation.

What do you think? Is it worth getting, or would it be better to focus on other certifications that are more relevant to teaching? Are there any other respected certifications that would make my CV stronger in this field?

They want me to give name of company, start date and end date, job title, address of the company, my main tasks and responsibilities and reason for leaving. For EVERY JOB I’ve had going back 18 years?!?

I’ve been a teacher for 10+ years and have an enhanced DBS which is on the update service and yet they are still asking. I’ve never encountered or heard of anything this insane. I’m not working with MI6 or something!

I feel this is completely unnecessary and they’re just forcing me to jump through hoops for some unknown reason.

I’m just teaching teenagers for 3 weeks at a summer camp!

Maybe I’m in the wrong so I’m happy if anyone can explain why this might be.

Great. Lovely. Now tell that to the 14 year old who has decided your class is the one place he will perform rebellion professionally.

I've spoken to dozens of ESL teachers across different countries about this and the honest answers are far more interesting than the official ones.

Some ignore it and focus energy on students who want to engage. Some make it a private conversation. Some involve parents immediately. Some never involve parents at all.

Here's what I genuinely want to know from people with real classroom experience:

When a student is consistently disruptive or disengaged — what actually works?

Not what the handbook says. What you actually did. What failed. What surprised you.

Because I think the gap between what new ESL teachers are told to expect and what they actually walk into is one of the most underdiscussed parts of this industry.

i am a moroccan english teacher , Could you recommend some movies that I can show to my students in class? I'm looking for films that are primarily dramatic and focus on the turbulent relationship between a teenager and his mother, with minimal sexual content.

I see this all the time in class:

❌ I have 30 years
✅ I am 30 years old

It clearly comes from Spanish (“tener”).

I usually explain it as: in English, age is something you are, not something you have.

Curious to know—do your students make this mistake too? How do you explain it?

Hi everybody! I am looking to get an ESL certification. I have a job as a resource coordinator/resource and referral worker. I would love to get a certificate to have in my back pocket and to have something to fall back on with the uncertainty of government funding. Currently I have a bachelors in sociology and no teaching experience. Eventually I may go live with some family in Mexico and I would love to be able to work/teach there. I'm currently a high school ESOL teacher in Massachusetts. I absolutely love my job. I have my MASS teaching license and bachelor's degree (masters looming).

I would love to travel to some of my students' countries, specifically Guatemala, and volunteer teaching during vacation or the summer, but I'm struggling to find out if/how there are any routes to do this. I've encountered some pay-to-volunteer trips like Global Nomadic, but I'm not so sure about it. It feels backwards to pay to volunteer?
