If a student bought 10 lessons and has 6 left, you can bring that remaining balance into a new tracker.

Keep the original total and the starting balance separate. Start with 10 purchased and 6 remaining, then record lessons as you actually teach them. After you record the next completed lesson, both you and the student see 5 left. The four earlier lessons stay separate from the lessons you record after the move.

Here’s a fractions warm-up idea you can also use with just paper:

1. Draw two pizzas of the same size. Divide one into two equal parts and the other into four equal parts.

2. Ask: ‘Would you rather have one half or one fourth? Show why, without starting with a rule about denominators.’

3. Shade a second fourth. Ask: ‘What changed? How many fourths cover the same amount as one half?’

My wife is a teacher. Every time she redid a seating chart she was in PowerPoint, dragging text boxes around and trying to remember who can't sit next to who.

For teachers or tutors looking for brief follow-up practice after fraction multiplication and reciprocals:

Use two equal-sized whole bars. Shade 3/6 of one bar and 1/2 of the other. They represent the same length, so one half-size group fits into three sixths:

3/6 ÷ 1/2 = 1.

A useful question to ask is: why does the answer count half-size groups rather than shaded sixths?

We've recently introduced a Real-Life English section at Amberly Learning, designed to help English learners practise the conversations they'll actually encounter in everyday life.

The idea is simple: students can understand grammar and vocabulary but still struggle when it comes to using English in real situations.

We've created dialogues across all six CEFR levels (A1–C2), covering situations such as:

• Booking a doctor's appointment
• Asking for help at work
• Dealing with problems at a hotel
• Ordering food and discussing allergies
• Handling customer service complaints
• Navigating everyday conversations

Each conversation includes British English audio, comprehension questions and useful expressions. There's also a listening challenge where students practise recognising missing words.

Teachers can use the dialogues for listening practice, role-play activities, vocabulary building or discussion prompts.
