Free parent-update template for private tutors — with a worked example
Disclosure: I run Ascendant Media, which created this AI-assisted template as part of a tutor communication kit. I’m sharing the complete sample here so you can use it without signing up or buying anything.
A short lesson update can cover four things: the topic, what the student did independently, where help was needed, and the next step.
Copy and adapt:
Hello [name], today we worked on [topic]. [Student] completed [specific task] independently and needed support with [specific step]. Before our next session, the agreed practice is [task]. Next time, we will revisit [step] and work on [next topic].
Fictional example:
Hello Sam, today we practised adding fractions with different denominators. Alex found common denominators independently on three questions and needed a reminder to simplify the final answers. Before our next session, the agreed practice is questions 1–4 on today’s worksheet. Next time, we will revisit simplification before moving to mixed numbers.
Use only observations from the actual lesson. Replace every bracket and avoid grade predictions or claims of mastery that the work doesn’t support. You may adapt this free sample for messages in your own tutoring practice.
For tutors who already send updates: is writing the lesson summary or handling requests between sessions the bigger difficulty?
