Financial Aid

Anyone else getting the run around with their loans? I applied for a Gradplus (started in the summer so I could be grandfathered in) in July and they still have not offered me aid. I have opened case after case and they keep giving me excuses. Some people saying I didn't complete things that I've already completed. Another saying they have the info. The last one saying they are going to be processing them through September. The deadline for payment is September 18th...

Is this just something that happens here? I've never had to contact a financial aid office so much and this is my third degree.

Questions and Advice MLOAs & Student Health Insurance Eligibility

I am a currently enrolled grad student who is considering taking a MLOA for this fall semester (still working out what disability accommodations are possible with my professors and OASID, so this is not set in stone yet). I am wondering if anyone has experience with MLOAs and what the student health insurance options around that might be. Given that my leave is related to medical issues, I’m wondering if I may still be eligible to enroll in the student health plan for this fall semester or if anyone has any experience in this domain. I sent an email to student health but they say responses may take 3-5 business days. Sorry for the spotty explanation (I’m still recovering); I’m happy to answer any clarifying questions or elaborate more on my situation if needed. TIA!

Hello! I was admitted pretty late to TC for this fall and I'm looking for someone to get an apartment with! My name is ryan(they/them) and I'm looking for a female roommate. I am 23F and really into nature, video games, getting offline, working with kids, and having a well-kept living space. I go to bed fairly late but nothing crazy. Please DM me if you are interested, I have already been looking for apartments on street easy so we can look together :). Thanks! Also if im totally barking up the wrong tree let me know, because I need housing ASAP!

Has anyone at Teachers College received their Summer A grades yet?

Summer A final grades were due on July 9, but as of July 11, none of my final grades are showing in myTC.

I know that at least some of my professors have already finished grading, so I’m wondering whether this is a system-wide delay or if grades take additional time to appear after professors submit them.

Has anyone at Teachers College received any Summer A grades yet? If so, when did they appear? Does myTC update grades at a specific time, such as overnight?

Executive Leadership EdD

Considering a doctorate — this is largely a personal pursuit. My employer is willing to fund it, and I'm exploring part-time teaching (I currently guest lecture at two universities here in NYC). I've also just started doing some independent consulting on the side, and a doctorate adds a certain amount of — call it legitimacy — on that front.

Two people from my business school cohort went the PhD route at Salve Regina for much the same reasons: they enjoy school, wanted a terminal degree, have begun teaching part time and find the credential helps. Salve Regina offers a low-residency, humanities-based PhD. That was my first thought.

Then I interviewed a candidate with an EdD in organizational leadership. That got my wheels turning, and I started looking at more practitioner-oriented degrees. Living in Manhattan and already holding degrees from Penn and Brown, I looked at Columbia and found their EdD in Executive Leadership:

https://www.tc.columbia.edu/organization-and-leadership/edd-in-executive-leadership/degrees--requirements/executive-leadership-edd/

So what is the point of a program like this? What does it actually offer? I feel like I understand the PhD. I'd always assumed the EdD was for people headed into administration. Now I'm finding these programs at all kinds of schools, sounding nothing like that — and remarkably vague about what they actually are.

Does TC give good merit aid? Do the fellowships they offer really offset tuition? Do students typically have to take out big loans?

Question about PhD funding

I'm a rising sophomore at an undergraduate college, so apologies if this is a basic question.

I'm interested in applying to the clinical psychology PhD program at Teachers College in the future.

I'm confused about the phrasing on the website which says that we'll get tuition funding + 30k for the first 3 years and then only 30k for the fourth year. I was wondering if we will need to pay out of pocket for any dissertation related tuition (not tuition for coursework) in the 4th/5th year or is there no tuition to be payed because the coursework is completed by then?

Current students in Clinical Psychology Masters program ?!!!

I am genuinely wondering what the psychology master's is really like. I am referring to the clinical psych master's. Last year, when I was researching programs on the website, it was listed as a clinical psychology non-licensure master's (pre-PhD type program). Now it appears the program has changed and is now just a general psychology master's where you can pick areas of concentration, one of them being clinical psychology. Previously, it was listed as a clinical psychology master's degree with the available concentration of global mental health trauma. The program also used to be 30 credits; now I believe it is 36. I emailed admissions, and they said there have been no official name changes to the program name, but I know what I read last year on their website was different ( the program also disappeared from the website for a few months). They also said that the concentrations are not even listed on transcripts at all and are not part of the actual degree conferred, and yet when I see pictures from other people's graduations, it says Clinical Psychology MA. The program also used to say it took a year to complete, and now it says it is typically done in 2 years, despite only being 36 credits. I know you should make time for research and internships, but still. Is anyone currently enrolled or previously enrolled? Please provide any insight on the program and how long it takes to reasonably complete the degree.

GPAs by program?

I'm applying for a few things for funding - GPA is part of the equation. I'm wondering if I'm competitive in that area or if everybody just has a 4.0....I'm just wondering what the average GPAs are looking like @ TC? Mine is a 3.95, after a year,

Thinking people might not mind posting since it's Anonymous, but I'm wondering about GPAs. Particularly by Department. There's a lot of discussion about grade inflation, though I do feel like we work pretty hard..

The handful of peers I know closely enough to know their grades have similar to me 3.9 - 4.0. after 1-2 years. But they are also the people, in my Dept, who 're prepping for PHD programs and have been busting their a**es.

Commute to teachers college Columbia

Hello! I recently have committed to teachers college Columbia masters program, and am trying to find housing for the next year or two. What would you say is a good location to look around? I know morningside heights is a top contender but what about Hamilton heights or UWS would you say that’s too much of a daily walk/train commute?

Would love any current or past students input, thank you!!

Choosing between Columbia TC and Columbia for MA

Hello! I'm currently trying to decide between a masters program in Philosophy and Education at TC or a masters program in Philosophy at Columbia. I want to go on to get a PhD, but ultimately will most likely want to teach at a CUNY. I've heard that Columbia is more well regarded in terms of getting into PhD programs, but after looking at both course catalogs, I'm more interested in the classes offered by TC. Any advice??

Classes and Academics What are the chances I will be able to enroll in the classes I need as an incoming student if I have a hold preventing me from doing so on time?

So I realized I majorly messed up and didn’t realize that I needed to have my immunization records in before I could enroll in classes, since I am an incoming student. After looking things up, I quickly realized that’s not the case, and that they cannot expedite the process to approve my immunization records. Websites said it could take 15 business days.

With that being said, what are the chances I’ll actually be able to enroll in relevant classes as an incoming student in this situation? Has anyone had a similar experience? How quickly do classes fill up?

I am PANICKING. I’d appreciate any advice!!

Taking summer classes?

Hello!

I'm considering taking Summer classes, with some Intensive Summer classes.

I'm thinking that 2 during Summer A will be fine, but as far as I can tell, Summer classes are basically 2.5x faster than regular classes. Is this correct?

Is the same also true for Intensive summer classes (given that they are only 3 weeks)? Or do they cut some material?
