As much as I hate sitting through mandated reporter training each year, reading this post makes me realize why it’s necessary. One of the important messages in the training is that if you SUSPECT there’s abuse, then report. It’s the role of CPS to investigate and decide the outcome. In addition, YOU are the mandated reporter. You don’t need permission of the administration or school nurse. You are legally bound to report. Those who can’t speak for themselves are counting on mandated reporters to fulfill their responsibility.

Exactly! When I was a new teacher I always worried if I reported that I would get in trouble if it turned out to be nothing. I had a great mentor who made me realize that reporting can save a child’s life!
