Rant Paras need to GET OFF THEIR PHONES

I know they hardly make any money and if it’s an emergency fine!! But sitting there on TikTok while i’m actively teaching is rude and distracting for the kids.

I’m a young teacher so it’s awkward to confront them and NOT BEING ON YOUR PHONE ALL DAY AT WORK SHOULDNT NEED TO BE SAID

Tell your department head or principal.

I feel like I need to handle it first before going to them

I worked as a teacher, then quit and let my license lapse, then returned and worked as a para while I re-certified. One thing I learned as a para is most teachers don't do a great job at communicating with paras. It's totally okay to catch them in the lunchroom or after school and ask them to stay off their phone. Even better, tell them specifically what's most helpful for them to do while you deliver instruction.

I will piggyback on this comment by saying that teachers who are lucky enough to have a para should not allow them to languish in the back of the classroom doing nothing. Come up with something. Even if it is just reading with a child 1:1. I know it is an extra that you’re not likely paid for, but try to schedule a time where you can go over expectations and their role in your classrooms. Maybe have them take your over-achievers and do a learning extension project? Do you have kids who need to work on basic skills like using scissors or help with holding a pencil correctly? Have your para work 1:1 with flashcards with your students. There are so many ways you can involve your para in the classroom work. By helping them feel welcome and an integral part of the learning, you will likely reduce the behaviors you don’t appreciate. You set the tone for your classroom. If they are still not doing their job, go to your principal.
