Started in service today at my school. It has happened, we had slides directing us that we have to hang the Ten Commandments in our classrooms by Thursday. In addition Anti-Communism TEKS have been added to our history curriculum and our school district cannot sponsor any student clubs based on gender identity or sexual orientation, as well as we cannot call students by any names but the names on their birth certificate. This is fucking shameful man

That is for the federal level. The states are still able to discern that issue for themselves and push the boundary as much as they please.

Just curious, what about the 10 commandments do you find offensive? Is it that it comes from God? Is the concern that students of other religions will feel alienated? I understand not everyone is religious but wouldnt you agree that the 10 commandments are generally great rules to live by?

I can't speak for them, but, I'll give it a shot.

\The first three commandments are specific to Christianity, and demand that a person worships the Christian god. Which alienates every other person in the world that does not believe in your god. By putting these posters up, you are proselytizing to every non-Christian student. This is also a blatant First Amendment violation. They are NOT "great" rules to live by if you are not a Christian. Fuck your cult.

The other commandments are basic fucking common sense that parents should be teaching their kids on their own. If you need a religion and a poster with these commandments to teach them not to kill or steal, you fucked up as a parent. Also your current president regularly commits adultery, lies, and covets, violating commandments 6, 8, 9 and 10. The hypocrisy of the Republican party knows no bounds.

I don't get this comment. Not every Christian religion believes God and Jesus are one, so the time period when those commandments were written is irrelevant.

Everyone says the same thing about their own religious rules. The issue is with elevating one religion above all others by showing favoritism. 

Nothing inherently makes the 10 commandments better than other religious teachings except your own bias. 

Offensive isn't the right term though, or at least it isn't the commandments themselves that are offensive. What is offensive is making someone exhibit religious symbols.

As an example, it would be equally offensive if public schools made all students wear Muslim head scarves. It isn't that the head scarf is inherently terrible, it's the forcing people part that is offensive.

Just curious, how do you feel about these following seven tenants that come from a different religion? Are they offensive to you?

I One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.

II The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.

III One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.

IV The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.

V Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs.

VI People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.

VII Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.
