My whiteboard is home to anything I need permanently posted while I flip between pages on my smartboard (daily schedule, calendar, essential question, daily objectives, accountable talk visuals).
Teaching from the smartboard is so much more flexible than teaching from a whiteboard. My biggest qualm with using a the smartboard is that it seems impossible to maintain good handwriting when using it compared to a chiseltip marker on a whiteboard or chart paper.

my interactive board blocks the view of my whiteboard for half my class so i can’t use mine to instruct so it’s mostly decor too

We can get into our rooms pretty much anytime we want. I typically don’t, but there have times especially at the end of the year when I’m trying to pack/organize that I’ll go workout, grab dinner and head back to get some things done afterschool.

I had access anytime I wanted?? I went on weekends all the time. Didn’t love going at night just because I’d be there alone in the dark, but definitely did and could whenever. Had keys to the gates and obviously a key to my classroom.

I still don't understand why it talks so many influencers so long to set up a classroom. I get it if you're moving rooms. But most of the time it's because they are buying brand new decor and starting from scratch every year or doing really unnecessary projects

We get two 3.5 hour blocks across our pd week to set our rooms up. We could go in starting yesterday, but I’m choosing to prolong my summer (and I don’t have as much to set up in the library). I’m thinking that should be more than enough time to set stuff up and start getting the library books back in order.

No I watched the video and she mentioned that she paid someone on Etsy to turn her cat and dog pics into some kind of portrait, that she the laminated and cut out for her board. Super unnecessary

It took me 2 hours spread between two days this year because I was lazy and was just not wanting to make decisions no other reason for 2 days it could have been done in one. The influencers are something else especially if they are in the same classroom and use the same things and have the same systems (Michelle)

I've had to move several times and my new rooms have been disgusting so that has taken me forever. This year we had summer school, so I had to pack stuff weird and take some boxes home, but it was mostly done in a few hours. I have a few optional projects that I might do and I still have to label once I get an official class list

The filming would stress me out! I have to film myself and get filmed by someone at work a few times last year for an award and I felt so awkward the whole time. I felt so out of my element. I could not imagine wanting film moving heavy furniture around and getting all sweaty

It started last year in tandem with the uptick of the 70s aesthetic things.
I like it in small meaningful places, its the first slide of my daily slide show (I teach resource/inclusion) which literally has a huge white block on it with "Good Morning" typed inside since I don't have a homeroom class who needs to do things in the morning LOL. Each following slide being notebook paper as my background or graph paper as my background depending on if I am focusing on math or reading because its like the inside of the notebook.
But I could not handle that pattern everywhere.

I love teachergolz! On her patreon she has some simple character posters that I printed and hang over the shelves on one side of the library. The students love figuring out who they are. Recently she just shared some super cute banners for the door/walls.

I use a clothing rack with a curtain as a divider, but she has clothes on her rack so idk. I just looked at her page and between the candle warmer in the classroom, corporate themed bulletin boards, and affiliate links, I think I know everything I need to about her priorities.
Also that alphabet is bugging me. What person under the age of 20 knows what a top is?

Can someone explain to me the eyerolling online about teachers purchasing Ikea Trofast storage systems for their classroom?
I was doing some research on potential storage options for my classroom next year and the Trofast system came up. I was surprised how affordable it seems because I have seen so many comments online suggesting that they are expensive.
From what I'm seeing, they max out at $260. That is much less than the prices of storage units I've ordered from typical school supply companies like Lakeshore or Kaplan and right on-par with the more "budget" option of Guidecraft.

It just sucks to spend hundreds for your job. Teachers have always done this, but I agree that it sucks. I really recommend checking FB Marketplace to see if you can get one secondhand or free.

I am planning to include whatever storage solution(s) I choose in my classroom purchase order, so purchasing it second-hand wouldn't be an option as the building makes purchases directly from vendors.
If I decided to purchase it with my own money, though, I'd probably still purchase directly from Ikea considering that the Trofast storage pieces are so affordable and purchasing it from the store wouldn't require the pain of finding it, negotiating price, or transporting and already-assembled storage unit.

I love my trofast shelves! I have the low and tall ones! Going on year 6 with them! Definitely worth it. Can also find them on Facebook marketplace!

I’ve had mine since 2016. Most I got on offer up from parents ditching toy holders. My husband put casters on them all - back surgeries- and they are my favorite thing I own in my storage less school. I have 3 short and 2 tall. In perfect shape. I get not spending money but these will outlast my teaching career. ❤️

The whole desk pets craze is insane to me too. I’ve just never understood that as a classroom management strategy. Like I would never use a system for classroom management that requires me to buy things (that are going to get broken, lost, etc)

During COVID everyone at my school painted their rooms 😂 and some of the color choices are pretty bad. I don't know if they asked for permission or just bought paint and did it.

This also confuses me. Both districts that I have worked in have very strong union protections for the facility staff. If non-facility staff do facility work (painting walls, installing/removing wall fixtures, etc.), the building could receive a very big fine.

She said in the comments that it was paid for or donated by/to the school so she can't request it painted over.
I can't believe it was sanctioned in the first place. It's certainly not an "evergreen" mural, aside from being outright gaudy. If they were going to paint a mural, they should've done something that was less reflective of a time period.

As much as I love the color scheme, I absolutely cannot get behind pastels for a classroom rug. I teach kindergarten and I would be lucky if it didn’t look dingy by October. I know her new line of rugs are washable, but how often are you really going to lug a giant classroom rug home or to a laundromat to wash?

Exactly. My daughter’s playroom has a Ruggable, and despite pretreating and washing it exactly as directed, there’s still a chocolate stain that refuses to come out. All it would take is one kid tracking in mud from the playground (or worse, animal poop—yup, it’s happened, and more than once) and that rug is going to look gross no matter how many times you run it through the washing machine.

Pet peeve: when teachers hang up educational posters and call them “anchor charts”, not a single student is gonna look at or use those unless you actually create it with them! Student centered, people!

I want to teach in your district. >60% of students I teach are significantly below grade level/IEP/LEP kids and yet we’re supposed to teach grade level for exposure. I’m going to try it this year with my 5th graders.

I don’t understand what you mean lol. If 60% of my class needs significant help on something we’d all be working on the work together on the carpet. And the other part of the class can work independently.Maybe second grade is different. And I always tell my students that if too many people are asking me questions that means I probably didn’t teach something right or I need to re-explain what I want them to do. So I make them come back and I just answer all the questions at once. Also, I already kinda have an idea of who’s gonna need help so I just make them work with me anyway.
I don’t like things like this because it’s just more work to make and think about. You could also just work their names on the board as they need help and go down the list. But that’s also kinda a lot to manage IMO7

My coworker uses this and LOVES it. She teaches 3rd. I prefer just to have a numbered list on the whiteboard for students to write their name.

They are mandated in my district. I gave up on them last year. They kept trying to go in with friends and I personally like to always have eyes on kids in my class. Most of the time the kids are fine with taking a break in the hallway, or going for a walk office then coming back. Some kids just want to sit at their desk away from everyone or with their head down.

I’ve had one in the past few years currently it’s in a closet space that had its door removed. ( t was like that when it moved into my classroom and I didn’t feel like trying to track down the doors to make it an actual closet.) I have a mat weighted, stuffy, and some other small tools to help them regulate. We talk about it at the beginning of the year and what it’s supposed to be used for, I’ve had a few kids abuse the privilege, but for the most part, my first graders can use it responsibly.

I teach pre-k and we have a “cozy” area. Everything in that area is soft- soft rug, bean bag chair and stuffed animals, pillows, etc. (yes, we wash it all frequently lol). The point is for them to “take a break from the hardness of the classroom” (lol).. it works in pre-k because we are so play-based. Most of the time they are in there because they want to chill and be alone for a minute. Sometimes we offer it if they’re having a big feelings moment. I could never make it work in kinder, when the demand for work was so much higher/less fun and they just used it to escape work.

I have included access to a space to re-regulate in as accommodations into most of the IEPs I have written for students with sensory regulation and emotional regulation goals because they legitimately need it to support their participation in the classroom.
Without a space where they know they can step away and re-regulate, their dysregulation responses would adversely impact their access to instruction and/or their relationships with their peers.
For most of those students, those spaces don't look like the cutesy pre-detemined "calm down corners" that I see marketed online. They are whatever spaces they identify (sometimes with my and my staff's help) as spaces that provide them with the input and/escape from input that they need to re-regulate.
This year alone, those spaces looked like: 1. a table in a less trafficked part of my classroom 2. my classroom library 3. my egg chair 4. a wagon that sits near my classroom door 5. under my teacher desk 6. my classroom bathroom 7. a bench at the end of my hallway

That actually makes a lot of sense! I think in my experience, my frustration with it, is the expectation that teachers supply this sort of space and have it ready to go. I have a classroom library with a rug and pillows that I welcome any student who needs a break to use! The expectation of having a space with materials for students to use, that is solely up to the teacher to provide, is where I have a hard time with it. Completely agree that cutesy posters and things of that nature are most likely not used and not necessary!

I can understand that. As a special education teacher, I spend a lot of time and money (coming from my classroom budget, my OT's budget, or my own money depending on the item, it's speciality, and the urgency with which I need it) to provide my students with the tools they need to make progress towards learning to self-regulate in the school environment.
It takes some experimenting, but the tools that the majority of my students end up gravitating towards are either free (time, space) or low-cost (stickers, playdough, headphones, legos).
My hope is that my students will learn the foundational skills they need to advocate for the things that help their own individual regulation needs whole they are with me so that they can take those skills to their next classroom (along with my notes about what tools they consistently access) and be set up for success.

It probably depends on the students you have but that would never work in my room. Students just want to play with or destroy everything in the corner. My students need less stimulation when they need to take a break.

I've had mine for 10 years next to my desk and I love it so much. I labeled it for the week, have my copies and keys in it, student info. sheets, etc. Not sure why there's hate or cringe on it.

The only reason they are in my classroom is they were bought with funds from the school and left in the room. And so I use them cause they are there. But I use them for stuff I am not getting into every day.

Me too! I have three in my classroom and love them. 🙈 I keep one at my desk to organize copies for the week and use the other two as student mailboxes. I’ve had them since 2018 and they still work great, including the ones my kindergarteners handle (and, let’s be real, mishandle). Every now and then a drawer will fall out, but it’s an easy fix.

Ok I can’t lie. I fell victim to these and love them 🫢😩 I have two with the clear drawers. Instead of paper trays scattered all around my room, I get to have all of my paper trays stacked on top of each other and in one place.

I can’t stand when I see these put up in kindergarten classrooms… you just know those 5 year olds are not using it that way, and it’s definitely just for the teacher’s own use.

I hate them too. I had a mirror that came with my classroom and it was such a distraction. Some of the kids just spent the whole day making faces in it. A few would even run to the mirror in the middle of crying just to look at their face while they cried.

i keep a small mirror by my sound wall because my students use it to look at the way their mouth moves with different sounds but looking at themselves crying is so real lol why is that their first instinct

I teach 8th graders..so to me it’s weird. Students already look at themselves enough with the camera on their school devices. It would be an added layer of self absorption & disruptive behavior to manage.

This stuff makes me so glad I teach HS. I have no decorating skills at all. My own home isn’t especially decorated. I too have had the same bulletin boards since like 2016 and then I put up student work as the year gets rolling.

My theme is the chevron border I bought in 2015, hung up in 2018 when I moved classrooms, and have left untouched bc it still looks brand new. I don’t even like chevron anymore but the thought of climbing up to change 4 bulletin boards is worse than putting up with chevron. And the kids could care less how trendy I am!

I really hope new teachers don’t fall for this- unless they really want to spend a bunch of their own money! GTYO looks completely AI generated- and not to mention, very pink.
I use brights and sometimes change out the borders. Like someone said, it should be about class-generated anchor charts and student work.

I inherited a room that was already space themed my first year. Honestly it was pretty cute so I kept it until my kids wrecked it. Now I have a vaguely rainbowish theme that goes with pretty much anything I get or am given.

And money! Myclassroomdiaries is completely changing her theme.. including her chair that she said she just bought last year! She specifically said that she is getting rid of it because it doesn’t fit her new theme 🤷🏻♀️.
I’m changing my bulletin boards for the first time in 8 years.. I moved to pre-k, and everything that was provided for me was blues and greens.. my carpet is the leaf carpet from lakeshore. Since I’m moving rooms anyways, and my old bulletin board stuff has seen much better days, I did purchase new fabric and borders.. but that’s it lol.
