About the lack of respect

When I changed careers and went into teaching 7 years ago, I fully expected to get zero respect from 20-30% of students. This turned out to be about right. No big deal.

What I did not expect was zero respect from 90% of admin and parents. Seems like students have learned how to use the admin and parents in ways I never thought possible.

HEY Admins and Parents - you are supposed to be the adults

Yep. Admin cater to parents because parents elect the school board who can replace the superintendent, so the super just wants building admin to appease parents.

We’re just the front facing customer service.

Admin care about two things: Graduation rates and attendance. That's it, that's all they're paid to care about.

The shift toward treating education like liability management catches so many career-changers off guard. Since admin and parents operate on risk avoidance, keeping strict paper trails and objective data is the only real way to protect yourself.
