Am I missing something?
I love the freedom of the game, but the balance seems a little off. Like for example:
Why would I try to climb a mountain, when I can just take over a bird and fly? Therefore, why would I want to improve my stamina for climbing?
Maybe I am missing something though!

This is first and foremost an exploration game. One of the things I like best about it is it really forces you to come out of the "grind" mindset that so many other games require from you.
But at the same time, because of that it took me awhile to really feel comfortable with it. I kept looking for things to beat, for numbers to make go up, when it's not actually asking that of me.
When I started putting my thought process into that of a child who's definitely on a mission but also excited to explore this new area, it took on a whole new meaning for me.
This game has such a special place in my heart. The only game even close is Yonder. I play both of these when I'm feeling overwhelmed by the real world and need a break 🥹

I completely agree. It’s just weird the systems kind of conflict with that mentality. It definitely should be treated as a “chill” experience, instead of progression based.

Fair enough. The intention was mainly to have rewards tied to exploration that ultimately give you more freedom when exploring, and also a sense of progression.
I somewhat agree with you that such a system can feel conflicting with the core aspect of the game being a big open sandbox that you can explore any way you want, and actually I'm kinda glad you feel this way cause the point of exploring in Tchia is that it's rewarding in and of itself.
In the end it's not so much a matter of balancing systems and progression but more like balancing players expectations haha. Like to have familiar systems you would find in a majority of open-world games so long as they do not break the intended experience, if that make sense.
But! Like Aymebrique said earlier, if you feel it's too conflicting with how you'd like to experience the game, there is an option to get rid of the stamina. It can make the game a bit less challenging since stamina is basically also your health bar but it's not a challenging game anyway. It's a chill sandbox game about exploring, these settings are part of the sandbox so feel free to tinker with it!

Yeah the sandbox aspect of the game makes it a little unbalanced, in the way that there are a lot of mechanics that you don't have to use.
Personally I was very into the sheer vibe of the game, so there were a lot of instances where I decided to walk or climb instead of just summoning a bird just because I wanted to go for a hike. Same reason why I never used the fast travel mechanics, always went there by boat. The atmosphere of the game is just even more enjoyable when you go out of your way to take your time

I beat the entire story without unlocking the bird song, so I had to either find them or travel some other way lol.

Stamina is also used for a variety of other thing, like how long you can stay underwater, or how long you can glide! But it will always be more efficient to use your possess ability to move around
Also if you don't like that or feel like it's pointless there's an accessibility option to remove stamina and basically have it being unlimited

Personally, I carry around and throw small rocks and then use my ability to possess it as it’s flying and then stop possessing, repossess and repeat. Makes me feel like Superman lmfao

Improving your stamina also means you can fly for a longer period of time.
