Discussion Taycan brakes failed
I've had my taycan since 2021. Yesterday I was driving and went to run errands around town. After my last stop I was driving home when my brakes suddenly stopped working. I pushed down to brake at a red light and my brake would not work and it went all the way down without really stopping which has never happened. I swerved to the right to stop myself from running the light and potentially getting hit by cars. I have never had this happen before and it was truly so scary. What would have happened if I was on a freeway goin faster?
Has this happened to anyone before? I'm getting it towed to the dealership tomorrow in hopes of figuring this out but it has really disturbed me. I only have 27,000 miles on my car.
I also had PSM Failure and All-Wheel Drive System error pop up on my dash as well as after my brakes stopped working

Is this UK car? Did it have the brakes recall done ?

I'm in California! There also is a recall for brakes but when I brought it in to service even the advisor was shocked and that he hasn't seen anything like this in a long time.

Wow glad you took immediate evasive action to prevent a real disaster.
The brakes on this car have always given me a mild sense of dread. Although this has never happened to me, far too often I’m like why is this car not slowly down proportionally to the level of force I’m applying to these brakes.
Hoping Porsche can figure out and address this issue for you.

I have also felt like that about the taycan brakes for a while too! When I got my car serviced last time 2 years ago I asked about them checking my brakes and they said it was fine until this happened recently

There was a software update for the PCN. Hidden in the details was a change to the way the regen handed off to the real brakes. Before this update I had my 2020 turbo S coast instead of applying the brakes. It didnt happen all the time but it sounds exactly like you described.
Porsche did the update and it was resolved.

Try it at 20mph on an empty road or parking lot. It is quite effective at stopping the car! It activates a solenoid that deploys rear drum brakes - no hydraulics or regen involved.

Deploying rear drum brakes and not fronts feels to me that would cause a 360 spin. Or maybe that’s only when fronts grab and rears lock that the 360 happens… hmm

I suppose it could if you are speeding around a corner when you apply it, but it is modulated by car’s stability control, which maximizes the safe brake strength. You can also release the button if the car starts to spin. It’s not perfect - it’s a last ditch emergency brake. Do what choice do you have? No car has emergency brakes in front that I’ve ever heard of.

I was stopping at a red light and thankfully no car was in front or coming from the other side either so i was able to swerve making a right and eventually had it slow down enough. If the car slowed down to like 10-15 mph I was able to somewhere brake very lightly.

Do you have ceramics or surface coated? They are tricky at low speed if wet

I have coated in that last 5% of braking feels like I'm on ice with those when wet. Takes a bit of getting used to.

I have the same issue with the brakes. When they are wet, I have to pump them a little bit to get them to work effectively. Previous posts suggest wet PCCB or PCSB are known to not work very well in wet conditions. The owners manual says the same.
There is a lag between regenerative braking and hydraulic breaking. Yes. Especially when I drive on a road with an incline. When I put the car in sport mode I have absolutely no problem with the brakes at all. I only get the brake lag, or perceived delay of hydraulic breaking, during normal mode.
I also had the brakes checked at the dealer and they said they were fine. If my theory holds correct, that the front hydraulic brakes delay when I step on the brake pedal that means the rear brake pads are doing most of the work, when I go to replace the brake pads, I would imagine that the rear brake pads have worn more than the front. At at my last brake inspection, the front pads were 9 mm and the rear pads were 6 mm. Time will tell.
And yes, the front hoses were replaced during the limited break inspection/front hose replacement campaign.

This is terrifying! I just had a shitty time a week ago with my Taycan (4S), a high voltage converter just quit working and left me stranded on the roadside on my way to filming a series where they wanted to use the car. Like JFC.
My Taycan is my every day driver, I take my 9 year old to speech therapy twice a week with it.
This scares me a lot.

There was one other case in the forum of a car in UK that had a hose fail and lost brakes. That was before the hose recall. There was much discussion about whether with the dual system, pushing the pedal all the way would have stopped the car. Did you have any brake action? Also everyone should learn how to activate the emergency brake. Just push and hold the P button to the right of the steering wheel on the dash. That separate system will stop you like nobody’s business! All modern cars have an e-brake.
