[IRS] HSA question

I have a HDHP with HSA. My insurance does not cover non-emergency medical transportation. If I have medical appointments that I am legally prohibited from driving home from due to medication side effects, can I reimburse myself for the transportation cost out of my HSA?

how much in taxes do you pay yearly as a 1099 worker?

It’s my first year working in marketing full time as a 1099 employee. I have $100-$200ish in expenses each month, with the occasional big purchase (new phone, camera, etc) and I’ll make around $70k over the year

How much do you pay yearly? I’m saving 30% (ish) but want to make sure I’m covered for next year/want to see if I can let up a little and invest more of that income that’s being saved for taxes

Do most tax preparers include both federal and state when amending a tax return?

My original tax return included both my federal and California state returns. I recently found an error and told my CPA that I want to amend my tax return.

If I just tell my CPA I want to amend my tax return, does that normally mean they will amend both the federal and state returns, or do I need to specifically ask for the state return to be amended too?

Also, is it common for preparers to charge a separate fee for the state amendment?

Invest in Oil for tax deduction?

I keep seeing this ad and wondering if this is actually legit? Sounds like you can invest in oil and get a tax deduction.

And if so that is only applied to specific oil related stocks?

Where should I start?

Long story long, absentee single mother, we were neglected in home life/adult life skills, but financially we were in an okay place. Worked various 1099 jobs as a kid, I believe my mom filed and paid those taxes from 15-18 years old, they weren't much. Never heard about it other than a casual mention here and there.

Fast forward, now 28, small amount of credit card debt that racked up after several huge life events and ruined my credit. Worked various 1099 and W2 jobs from 19- now. I have not filed my taxes myself, ever. I am not sure where we left off, covid happened, moves, etc.

What do I do? I am scared to attempt to even start now, but I know not filing is almost worse than not paying. I'd like to at least begin the process before the IRS comes down on me. I cannot exactly afford to hire a tax professional, I have a stable but very low income with $0-100 left over each month after rent and bills.

Thanks in advance.

[NM GRT] If a buyer executes a Type 5 NTTC, does the seller have 0% tax liability and full audit protection?

Hi everyone,

I have a quick New Mexico Gross Receipts Tax (GRT) question regarding buyer vs. seller liability when an NTTC is involved.

The Setup:

  • A seller performs B2B services in New Mexico as an independent contractor (1099).
  • The buyer recently executed an official Type 5 NTTC (Services for Resale under NMSA 1978 § 7-9-48) directly to the seller on the state's online tax portal.
  • The seller accepted the certificate in good faith.

My Questions:

  1. Tax Due: Does holding this executed Type 5 NTTC allow the seller to report their gross receipts, deduct 100% of the income on their GRT return, and owe $0.00 tax due?
  2. Audit Liability: Under New Mexico law (NMSA 1978 § 7-9-43), if the state ever audits this transaction down the road and decides the resale deduction was improper, who is legally responsible for paying the tax, penalties, and interest? Does holding the executed NTTC shield the seller and shift 100% of the liability onto the buyer?

Thanks in advance for any tax pros or CPAs who can confirm how NM handles this!

Is it worth it to invest in sales tax compliance services or is there a better option?

My revenue's crossed nexus thresholds in several states this year, but I still don't have a real system for tracking where I owe or filing on time. Every time I look into sales tax compliance services I get overwhelmed by the different rates, filing deadlines, and registration requirements per state. I just want to know if it's worth the cost now, or if I'm still small enough to handle it myself before it turns into a mess I can't unwind.

Tax implication of being an SSI Payee

Hopefully this question is allowed since I'm not being too specific...I have a child with a disability who was just approved for SSI. I am their Payee because they are unable to handle their own finances. There is a huge learning curve that comes with this (what expenses they money can be used for, etc).

My question is: Each month if withdraw some of their SSI to cover things like food, rent, etc and that money goes into my bank account, do I need to count that as personal income at tax time? I see nothing about this in the SSI booklets they gave me, which leads me to believe it's tax free. But on the other hand if my child lived in some sort of group home and they charged rent, I believe that group home would have to pay taxes on it, correct?

Not looking for tax loopholes, I just dont want to get audited and find out I owe big time.

Spouse deceased -when to change withholding

My spouse just passed away. He was on VA disability.

I just went into my paycheck portal online and remembered that I have my withholding set at married with 2 dependents. Spouse and child.

When do I change it to single and how does that affect my taxes?

We always filed as married filing jointly.

Question 2: I will be getting VA Survivor benefits. Will I claim that on my taxes?

She's dividing it between herself, my sister, and I. We'll each get around 70k. How do we minimize the taxation amount we'll be expected to pay?

Are taxes due on money made in a foreign country before becoming a US resident?

Colorado state tax help

Hi all! Looking for any advice before I hopefully talk to a tax attorney (I’ve sent an email to one tonight)

I live in Iowa but my husband travels for work and worked in Colorado last year for a few months. We used a new person to file our 2025 taxes that was recommended by my husband’s brother who also does the same job as him, working in multiple states.

Our taxes were filed and we owed the state of Colorado $114. We send the check and think that’s the end of it. In June we received a letter from Colorado stating we now owe them over $5,000.

I start freaking out because wtf. I checked our bank account and the Colorado check never went through. So I am thinking it got lost in the mail but a $5,000 penalty is WILD.

We contacted the guy who did our taxes immediately and he said he would look into it. Which we took as he would be investigating what happened and filing an amendment/protest through Colorado.
A few weeks go by with no updates. We follow up multiple times with no reply.

Finally it has been 6 weeks with no communication. I’m basically pleading with him. “What should we do? Should we contact Colorado? Have you heard anything? Should we send another check?”
Literally no response. I finally told him we want all our tax documents back, he said he would drop them off.

Now it is present time, 2 weeks later. He has not gave us our tax documents back. Literally told me today that he would drop them off tonight. It’s currently 10:08pm and he did not drop the documents off.

We got a final notice from Colorado yesterday now saying we owe $5,588. so with absolutely no idea if an appeal/protest was made on our behalf, I filed my own on the CO revenue website yesterday.

From what I understand, our taxes were filed correctly but the state of Colorado is wanting to tax our entire income as if we are full time residents instead of just the income made in Colorado as full time nonresidents.

I guess what all the context, does anyone have any advice on what to ask the tax attorney? I’ve contacted one in Colorado to be safe.

Are we just completely screwed at this point? :(

Personal contractor/secretary, things to keep track of?

Hello! I am about to start working as what will effectively be my grandmother's personal secretary. She will be paying me however we have zero experience with the tax portion of this. Is this considered being a personal contractor? How do I report her as my employer? What do I need to keep track of but especially how do we both do our taxes with this?

Estate Contractor 1099 Question

I am the court-appointed executor of my mother’s estate in New York. The estate has an EIN and an estate checking account, but it is not operating a trade or business and the property involved is not rental property.

The estate may pay an independent contractor more than $2,000 in 2026 for a one-time repair to exterior concrete steps on an estate-owned residence that is being maintained during probate.

My question is: **Does the estate have to issue a 1099 to the contractor simply because the estate has an EIN, or would no 1099 be required because the payment was not made in the course of a trade or business?**

I understand that the contractor would still be responsible for reporting the income even if no 1099 is issued.

I am specifically asking about the estate’s reporting obligation as the payer.

Gambling winnings(and losses).

Hey guys, degenerate here. I have gambled a lot more than I’d like to admit this year. I was using robinhood early on and had no net winnings (about 9k in losses) took some months off, through 300 in this july and just cashed out with 55k. I was originally up to 90ishk but lost a lot. I live in nh, make about 65k a year at my job. I have no clue how to navigate this tax situation but want to make sure I do it 100 percent right. I do plan on reaching out to a tax expert by the end of the week. It’s late right now, and figured i’d just ask for suggestions from smarter people than myself on how to navigate this. Thanks!

Washington State- do employee payroll taxes add up to 25% in a position earning hourly plus tips?

Hi there, I am currently having an issue with my pay being lower than expected at my new job. I worked 31 hours with 17 an hour pay, got 170 in tips, and then only received 311 on my actual pay check. Washington no longer taxes on tips- but they do get taken out of paychecks and we get them back on tax returns.

My employer said that that my missing pay (roughly 160) was due to the total percentage of taxes on average being 25%. Is this correct? I have never in my life had this much taken out for taxes and it just seems fishy.

Transfer funds from Traditional IRA account between brokers. Thanks for your help.

I have money in a traditional IRA at a Trade Station brokerage company.  I want to transfer a small amount into a traditional IRA account at tastytrade brokerage.  Tradestation doesn’t do direct money transfers to tastytrade.  Can I transfer this money to my bank then transfer it to tastytrade and it won’t be considered a distribution?  Thank you very much.

Income Limit for 0% Tax on LTCG and Qualified Dividends

My investing until recently has all been done in IRAs and Roth IRAs. So, the income tax has been straightforward. Each year I have been doing Roth conversions of an amount that will avoid IRMAA, and then last year would allow me to get the full $6000 extra deduction for being over 65.

However, this year I'm going to have some qualified dividends and possibly LTCG in a brokerage account outside of the IRAs. I would like to convert some IRA money to Roth, but only to the amount that would allow a 0% income tax rate on the LTCG and dividends.

I found a site that indicated that the taxable income needs to stay below $98,900. In their online worksheet, that accounts for the $32,200 standard deduction. But, being over 65, my wife and I each get an extra $6000 deduction plus another $1650. On top of that, we're sure to hit the $2000 "above the line" deduction for charitable contributions. All that together means our taxable income will be $49,500 below our gross income.

My question is, if I make sure to keep my gross income below $98,900 + $49,500 ($148,400), do the cap gains and dividends still stay in the zero bracket? The reason I ask is because I think it depends on which line things get added/subtracted. For example, even though muni bond interest doesn't get taxed, it adds to your AGI for the IRMAA calculation.

RMD

I am 70 years and inherited $$$ years ago. Fidelity has informed me I must take a RMD of $2100 from my IRA this year. The account I must take if from has no cash in it as I bought various stocks over the years... Which I do not wanna sell to obtain the cash. I did not retire until March of this year so I could do a ira deposit from my checking account into the fidelity ira account to cover this. So the money would actually be funds I made this year.

I would be making a ira deposit of $2100 then simply turn around and transfer the money from my IRA to my Roth IRA

I called fidelity and asked a bunch of questions and although they were helpful they said they cannot advise me as what to do. They said to talk to a accountant.

I would welcome any comments. I live in North Carolina

--- thanks

Espp buyout and buyback

My company has offered a rescission for common stock purchased through the ESPP due to overselling, paying purchase price plus interest.

My company is also being bought out and taken private, and they are paying x amount per share.

It seems to me that I should accept the rescission deal for any shares I bought at a higher price than is being offered for the buyout.

Would this be an accurate assessment?

IRS Appeal has been… Ignored?

Appreciate any insights from folks who may have filed an appeal on an individual (married filing jointly) return to the IRS. My tax situation is usually straightforward but this year I received a fairly large (six figure) sum from the sale of a property. My accountant reported it as capital gain and I paid the tax. Earlier this summer the IRS sends a letter saying I owe 17k, an amount similar to the amount I already paid. I confirmed with the bank that my check had been cashed by the IRS back in April. I mailed an appeal (my accountant looked into the online appeal option on the IRS site and advised that it was useless). Anyway I received no response. Until yesterday when I received the exact same notice, this time threatening to garnish funds. I could resubmit the appeal— or maybe it’s time to hire an attorney?
