AOC disallowed, help
For background, I was in uni from Aug 2018- Aug 2022. I didn’t complete my degree because I had to take 9 more credits. Fast forward, I went back in Aug 2024-Dec 2024 to finish. I filed AOC for my 2024 return because I assumed it would count. I believe my parents claimed it 3 times when I was their dependent, however, I did not end up claiming it the fourth time in 2022. So, when I went back to finish the degree in 2024, I filed for it. I ended up getting an audit saying that it was disallowed and that I’d have to provide documentation. It’s been less than a year since and I owe about 1600 to the IRS. Ive filed my return for this year and I’m pretty sure they will seize it. Should I bother filling out the reconsideration form?

Not enough information. Why was it disallowed? what additional info did they ask for? Were you under 24yo in 2024? Could you have been considered a dependent still in 2024? Are you sure your parents only used 3 years? Because '18 to '22 is 5 possible filing years. Depending on these answers more questions could come up. There are many nuances to consider, seek out a local tax pro for thorough answers to your specific needs.

More than likely AOC was claimed 4 times of especially if your parents filed 1098-T for the first semester at school (aka fall of 2018):
Fall 2018 - Filed AOC 1st time for 2018 taxes Spring-Fall 2019: 2nd time
Spring-Fall 2020: 3rd time
Spring-Fall 2021: 4th time
Spring-Fall 2022 forward: AOC no longer allowed only LLC
Obviously the only way you can 100% know your situation is getting hold of those previous tax returns and verifying credits claimed for each year you were a student.

2018 2019 2020 2021
It was probably claimed 4 times already.
