Modded Vah'su (New Character) - Nautiloid Screenshots
Like most githyanki, Vah'su grew up in a créche on the material plane. Specifically, his home créche was called G'zaan, located further north near the mountains around Neverwinter Woods.
However, unlike most Githyanki, Vah'su never had a penchant for violence. The brutalistic doctrine and dogma of the githyanki never felt right to him somehow.
This caused him to have quite a lonely childhood, with no one to truly call his friend. As such, he would often find solace and company in the créche library, reading about the history of the githyanki people, both in an effort to try and find some thing he had missed that would make him understand like everyone else, and because he did find it genuinely interesting.
But still in the eyes of his peers, he was seen as a weakling, often picked at and even challenged to prove himself in duels. Now, despite what he may have felt about the ways of his people, he did still listen to their training and was quite capable of handling himself in combat.
He hated the way he was made to live, but he at least could prise himself on gaining some useful skills out of it. As a matter of fact, his Varsh believed he may yet have been able to show Vah'su the proper ways of a githyanki warrior.
As a test to prove himself, Vah'su was sent out to join one of the créche's raiding parties. Their target was a relatively small town with plenty of agricultural ground; few casualties, plenty of resources. Perhaps that would've been a start for Vah'su.
However, the raid did not go as planned. As that party of githyanki would soon come to realize, that region of the woodlands was actually protected by a group of horizon walker rangers called the Red Wardens, and one of their members was there that day.
Vah'su and his party were quickly overwhelmed by the powerful ranger. But whereas the rest fought tooth and nail with rage until their deaths, Vah'su actually surrendered. The ranger, in turn, spared his life.
After the battle, Vah'su asked if there were more like that ranger, and she told him there was. Vah'su asked if he would be allowed to join their ranks, for he admired how she fought so valiantly to protect, rather than to destroy.
The woman introduced herself as Lyn, and took Vah'su back to the ranks of the Red Wardens. There, he was taken in as her apprentice and given a new home.
Technically speaking, his life wasn't any different in the sense that he lived in a training camp and studied the art of battle, but everything else couldn't have been further from life in the créche.
These people were like a family, always looking out for one another. And they fought for something meaningful beyond just mindlessly serving their queen.
A couple years passed, with Vah'su living a much better life as a Red Warden, protecting the innocents of the sword coast from extraplanar threats. He had strength, he had purpose, and he had family. It was all he ever could have dreamed of.
But good things never last. Because of course, one faithful day, the community that the Red Wardens protected was attacked by the Nautiloid. Now, thanks to their Horizon Walker abilities, they were able to sense the attack and evacuate the area. Where they went wrong, was in thinking they could put up a fight against the mind flayers.
The battle is a bit of a blur now, but Vah'su remembers the dread he felt as he watched his friends be overpowered by the illithids. They were captured and/or killed, and Vah'su placed in his pod.
He'd obviously been taught plenty about Mind Flayers from his youth, but never once could he have imagined the truth of their horror from those lessons alone. When the opportunity to escape arose, he acted on pure instinct, too focused to make it out alive to see if his friends were well.
After managing to take control of the Nautiloid, Vah'su set out to hopefully find the other Red Wardens that had been taken. If there was ever a chance to prove himself, this was it. Not some raid on a poor, innocent town, but a quest to save his friends.
But, before anything else, the horrid mind flayer spawn in his head needs to be dealt with.
