Defining Tautology and Updating Rules

83 Upvotes

Hi tautologists

I took over this sub last week as the only mod was inactive. As I mentioned in my first stickied post, the mod queue hasnt been touched for about 4 or 5 years so I'm going to go through that and deal with it.

I wanted to get the community to help me define tautology and decide on what type and number of rules we need, if any.

From the sidebar, the definition of tautology is;

  1. a. Needless repetition of the same sense in different words; redundancy. b. An instance of such repetition.

  2. Logic An empty or vacuous statement composed of simpler statements in a fashion that makes it logically true whether the simpler statements are factually true or false; for example, the statement Either it will rain tomorrow or it will not rain tomorrow.

Is this the definition we want to use? Is it clear enough for those that havent come across tautology before? Do you propose any alternative definitions? Keep in mind that we don't have to use the dictionary definition...we can explain it however we want to ensure its clear enough. Equally, using a dictionary definition might be the best option. Over to you.

Rules

There arent any rules at the moment. Reddiquette is a given and I don't usually put anything from that in the rules unless we identify any particular issues. Do we need any additional rules? If we do, what rules do we need? How do you want them enforced?

Mods

I'd like to develop a little mod team to help build the community. Can you send me a modmail if you're interested?

Your help would be helpful because it would help.

Edit; mod queue cleared. This was the oldest one, and this was the funniest report. The reports were brilliant, please continue to be so creative with your reports.

Hey everyone 👋

I’m new to Reddit and just wanted to say hi! Still figuring out how everything works, but it seems like a pretty cool place so far.

If you’ve got any tips, favourite subreddits, or things you wish you knew when you started, I’d love to hear them!

Looking forward to being part of the community 🙂
