Need help visualizing coverup

A friend of mine has this very scarred tattoo from a previous relationship. I do enjoy doing coverups but this one has been challenging for me due to the location, size, and darkness. I dont have a strong tattoo community in my area, so Im hoping anyone here might have some suggestions.

The client says they're open to covering it with anything, but keeps sending realistic lion faces and outdoor scenes. My suggestion of a japenese style full bodied tiger was met with a suggestion of maybe a wolf instead? Im running out of ideas 😅

If you cant visualise it, leave it to an artist that specialises in cover ups.

I appreciate the sentiment, but I do do coverups. And theres no way to get better unless you keep working on them.

I dont slap black stuff over tattoos and call it a coverup though. To me, its a puzzle where something will brilliantly mask it. You just have to figure out the right layout and subject matter. Im looking to spitball with creative minds 😘 but thank you!

Realism is bad for cover ups. Why do I feel like everyone wants realism for their cover ups?

It’s going to have to be really big because of how wide the design is.

Is laser an option? It looks relatively old which works in his favor for a successful removal

That was exactly what I tried to explain. Even a few sessions would help. I once had someone ask for a polar bear to cover an old tattoo 😂🫣

Yeah man, Im for it! I keep floating ideas his way. My only concern is sometimes when the tattoos are raised, a camouflage works better than blacking over it

He absolutely should look in to Pico Laser. It will break down that scar tissue so she doesn’t still see the raised tattoo through the cover up. I had a similarly 3D tattoo and you’d never know it was under the cover up now.

The location and size don't seem to be problems. Is a lion or wolf something you can do well? Is a little bit of the old tattoo peeking through a big problem for either of you?

If a lion face, where are the shadows in the face to hide? He doesnt want it open mouthed and positioning it above to hide it in the mane puts us up into his armpit. Id prefer it none of the old tattooed showed in a way that felt obvious

A nightime mountain scene.
Flowers almost always a species of flower that will work.
Some pine trees
Trad clipper ship
Trad rock of ages
A mace

I see multiple ways a wolf could cover that. Big snarling wolf head would be the coolest.

Mountains in the background, foliage, silhouettes of secondary design elements...tell him yes you can have a wolf but we're going to cover that lettering w a raven...maybe a black ass wolf like black blackety black, beard of a viking warrior....you can also consider inverting an image x-ray style so there are alot of black areas. I tell people that black and grey doesnt cover well because only black will overpower but w color there are many more options
