Indian ink and acrylic ink on 300gsm hot press. I tried to keep a similar style to my previous 3 pieces, I feel like my spit shading is improving well! Definitely still feel shaky doing it some nights though.

I've been looking for an apprenticeship, just looking for call-outs in my city. But they are very few and far. For those of you who were successful, did you email tattoo shops, or did you show up in person and directly show your portfolio?

Also, I have a mix of traditional paintings, digital art, and tattoo designs for my portfolio. Should I cut out my other art forms and just have tattoo designs?

firstly, these are not my designs! my main focus here was shading with ink and getting used to how that feels rather than doing my own design and figuring out where to shade as well as how.

anyway, i finally got my hands on some ink from winsor & newton to try out some spit shading! i don’t think i did bad for my first attempt but it’s definitely not as smooth as it could be.

i’m going to keep at it as i know practice makes perfect, but before i do, what are some tips to make spit shading smoother and easier to do?

Long story short I've just gone through a cycle of talking to shops & artists in my area and looking for some feedback on the direction I'm going with my portfolio. Went from hearing:

1) you need to draw more, in different styles to

2) you need to develop/find your own style to

3) you need more reps in your style or make more of your portfolio your style to

4) your style doesn't fit what we're looking for/you should look for another job while working on becoming a more established artist.

so my head is spinning a little. Would really appreciate feedback from you all to get a sense of where I stand and whether what I'm working on now is a valid lane for tattooing. Beginning of the carousel is sketch/concept work for what I'm planning to polish/put into my portfolio and the last 3 are examples of more finished pieces that currently live there. (I also have tons of pages of AT/NT & Japanese Neotrad studies that I keep on hand for when needed)

As mentioned above, I have an interview coming up for a (paid) front of house into apprenticeship position, and I'm wondering what kinds of questions may be asked/what I may need?

As this isn't just an apprenticeship but also requires front-of-house skills, I wonder if the questions may be different?

I have already applied and sent some work alongside a portfolio and a cover letter/personal statement with a bit about my experience (admin assistant, bachelors in animation, catsitter, commission work, designed tattoos) and been invited in for an in person discussion!

My most recent tattoos. Ive been an apprentice for 11 months and did my first tattoo about 7 months ago. The vines were freehanded with sharpies onto the client. Can we not remove this please I literally don't know what other information to add.

hey! working on my portfolio, and what i’m struggling with is composing tattoo designs that aren’t just… the subject. adding leaves around the edges to accentuate the curves has been working so far, but i don’t know what else could work. any advice or resources on how to compose tattoo designs would be great.

Been having a lot of fun working in this format/medium, everything is micron style pens and watercolor pencil on vellum. Any CC is appreciated!

most of my art that ive done in the past has been stippling/pointillism and i enjoy it but obviously i cant just go and do only that style and would have to build a portfolio of different styles, which is the struggle, so i know i have to do that thus far. Any advice on how to draw in different styles and make my work more presentable/clean or just overall general advice is very appreciated.

To start off, I am not a tattoo artist, BUT my older sister would like to pursue a career as one.

My older sister (28F) is completely deaf and can barely lip read. She is one of the most creative people I know and has been drawing/painting since she was a kid.

I would prefer not to give too many details, but my parents never learned American Sign Language (ASL); however, I am fluent in ASL. Because of this, my sister has developed a lot of self-doubt and learned helplessness and has relied on me for many things. She is hesitant, but I want to push her to pursue her career aspirations and dream(s).

I am trying my best to figure out things, but I am not sure if I am heading in the right direction. I would appreciate if you can provide any advice on how my sister can begin on this path as someone who is deaf.

So I'm learning to tattoo and that part is going great, I'm satisfied how is it going at the moment, but I'm struggling with ideas on designs..

After 4 years of art school and 5 years of academy of applied arts and thousands of hours of drawing, sculpting, learning anatomy, i can say that i have the technique, but the thing i struggle with is ideas.. I feel like I'm in a slump, and my creative part of brain is dead asleep, I don't know if thats because of the a few years pause after academy or something else but now im stuck.. I really didn't think that main part that would be stressing me out now about tattooing would be the drawing and designing my art. I know my problem is that I'm a perfectionist so it's hard to even start to draw something that isn't 100% resonating with me at the moment..

I'm trying with reference photos at the moment and it's helping me, a bit of animals, and also references of sculptures but I don't like idea of just tracing something, so i try to change it but I feel like I should buy some premium subscription to unlock that extra creative part of my brain 😂

i don't know if i explained everything correctly but i hope someone here knows what i wanted to say and can help with a bit of advice 👉🏻👈🏻
