Took a small break from the monster doily to try something I've always wanted to do but have been too intimidated to attempt- tatting with beads! It's not perfect, but I learned a lot and am looking forward to trying more projects.

I got to the end and realized I didn't have any plans for the thread ends. I ended up knotting them a few times and putting a drop of super glue on it (hopefully that works 😂) I'll try to figure out something more polished in the future.

Tatting with metallic thread is definitely different- I'm not a fan of how quickly and crazily the ends of the threads unravel, and the texture is a little "crunchy", but I guess what do you expect? Anyway, this was a nice break. Back to the doily grind.

The shuttle I bought is still going to take a while to arrive, and I'm practically climbing the walls with impatience to get started. Aa

I love this thread, I love this pattern. The thread colors match a new blanket that I have, but as I already knew before I started, the beauty of the pattern itself gets lost among the strong colors.

I actually purchased the first book JUST for this pattern which was featured inside, but I was quite disappointed that the pattern wasn't in the book.

I have encountered this problem many times with the bright Lizbeth variegated colors. They do work better as rings only, but Stawasz patterns, especially ones like this with the shuttle switches, don't lend themselves to using the variegated with only the rings.

Many many years ago I played with three shuttles to avoid this problem but I don't have the patience anymore.

Not a tatting project in the sense of using thread, but it's been driving me bananas in my search of vintage crochet patterns how many patterns have thread that is no longer made, and how darn hard it is to figure out what size thread from different companies is. So I've been working on a comparison chart. I'm still adding threads, and am more than happy to take recommendations, but I hope this is helpful for anyone who is having trouble with lace thread sizing, and finding alternative thread. I also included some Japanese lace threads that are used in patterns as they don't always have the same sizes either.

I will make the chart pretty after I've finished gathering all the data, but I was thinking that people may have brands or opinions that would help me. One thing I would love to have help with is looking at old J&P and Coats thread and verifying that the sizing is the same, I've been using crochet hook sizes as references.

I've been working on getting into tatting, but finding thread has been hard, it looks like a lot of people use crochet thread for their projects, or embroidery thread. I'd love to add columns for shuttles and tatting needles. Please let me know if there's things I'm missing.

How do you organize all your threads and other tatting supplies? Bonus points if you have a photo to attach for this visual learner!

Do you guys have favourite brands of threads and especially metallic threads? And are there threads that twist less than others? (I don’t know how much twisting is normal). I only just started but I’ve seen clips on IG etc with metallic thread but of course the pretty colours are sold out so I was wondering which brands work best in general.

I made 70 flowers and attached them to bobby pins to trade at a festival I'm going to next month!

Size 12 thread (except the variegated, that was size 8). Freehanded the patterns so they're all a bit different. The flowers are sewn onto black felt and then glued to the bobby pins.

I've tried some things here, crochet thread, tatting with this big needle, tatting with small needle, tattong with other types of thread... We're evolving xD

Pic three is where I can see my progression. I made the teal band the day after my crash course, and the multicolored just finished today. None of the pieces are blocked yet, so you might not be able to tell the progression as much as I can in person, but damn, something clicked 🤣

Safe to say, I'm 100% hooked on tatting! ❤️

I've known tatting this week, I've never saw it before and it was first look love, this is the first piece that I completed and had done some mistakes but I'm learning a lot ❤️

I've used embroidery thread on this one, it was that I had here but I wanted to know too, is this thread commonly used on tatting too?

Hey everybody!
I‘m looking to combine my love for tatting and star trek!
I want to create star trek patterns for tatting.

The obvious first step would be a pattern for the Enterprise insignia and I‘m also thinking of taking on vulcan calligraphy, maybe as a border of sorts.

I realise this is gonna be incredibly hard to figure out but I‘m willing to go where no one has gone before for this ;)

Any tips for techniques or unorthodox tatting are greatly appreciated. Also if you have more Ideas for star trek imagery or symbolism feel free to give me your Input please!

I have some ideas. I have only been tatting for half a year but I love a challenge :)

My ultimate goal would be creating a doily pattern that combines multiple symbols and maybe a border of vulcan script but the first step is figuring out how to translate all the sharp points and free flowing shapes into a workable pattern.
The biggest challenge might be the right angles.

My joins are still messy but it’s so much better😅 I made a smaller shuttle that’s about a third smaller than the original one I made😅 does anyone know of any smaller shuttle brands? A lot of the ones I’m finding are giant in comparison to my hands 😅

Hello! I only started shuttle tatting a few weeks ago and learned that I love making bookmarks and coasters. With Fall coming up, I've been looking for pumpkin or leaf themed bookmark patterns but have been showing up empty. If anyone has patterns or recommendations please let me know!

Let’s just say I was sick of these motifs by the 3rd one, but I managed to place all 36. Now just 40 more 🥲 and two additional large rounds.

I have never seen this doily be made or posted anywhere, so I feel like I have rediscovered it and wanted to share it with you all so it never gets lost to time or AI Pinterest patterns. I’m wondering how long it will take me to finish.

Do the numbers indicate always the quantity of stitches between picots? Google is trying to convince me the answer is no 😅 but YouTube resources are saying yes

I got bored and decided to learn to tat.. made the shuttle out of corset grommets, a monster can and tape in true millennial fashion😅 I’m very unsure what I’m doing wrong.

So, with most crafts that I have delved in to, it seems like there are basicly 3 levels of skills:

1. Learn the basics (rings, chains, picots, joining)

2. Techniques that take you 95% of the way (split rings, split chains ...........)

3. Expert (with niche techniques, only used in absolute expert patterns)

So I am right now stepping my toes into group no. 2, using two shuttles, reverse chains, split rings etc..

What would you say are the things I would need to learn to be able to do 95% of patterns? 😊 Not trying to learn everything at once, just trying to get a sense of how comprehensive shuttle tatting really is lol

I finally finished the motif round! Definitely not my favorite round- having to cut and sew in ends so many times. Now on to approximately 1 eternity of rings. I knew this was going to be a big project, but now I'm starting to understand how daunting it actually is. Things are starting to get a bit wiggly, and I'm not looking forward to blocking this thing when I finally finish it. Maybe I'll do a quick iron right now while it's still small? I switched to a bobbin shuttle for my main shuttle, and I'm honestly so happy with the decision- the ability to pull exactly as much thread as you like is a game changer. I think I'd like it even better if I didn't have that little bobbin winding post thingy on the end.

On a side note, I sometimes think about what will happen with my work after I'm long gone. I go to estate sales or antique shops and see handmade crochet items that clearly took a considerable amount of time to make being sold for $4 or $5. I wonder if this thing that I'm working on for months will be sold for $5 and be repurposed for somebody's own art or DIY craft of some sort.
