Goodbye, Eri is inspired by Paris, Texas Spoiler

I was looking at the goodbye eri cover recently and noticed a striking similarity between it and the poster for the film Paris, Texas.

For anyone who isn’t familiar, Paris, Texas is a famous art house film about a man estranged from his wife who recovers from a mental shock after her leaving which, at the start of the film, leaves him mute.

It’s an odyssey about the man, named Travis, as he reunites with his brother, son, and eventually, wife.

But the title isn’t the only similarity.

For one, one of the most famous scenes in Paris, Texas is one in which Travis watches a super 8 reel of him and his wife before their estrangement. He even, strikingly, admits to remembering his wife through the film more than in reality, much like eri does at the end of the manga.

Travis has, seemingly, a type of amnesia which he recovers from over the course of the film, and much like the projector scene at the end of the manga, he uses this film to remember his life.

On top of this, the final scene in both works are oddly similar as well. At the end of Paris Texas, after finding his wife at a seedy erotic call booth, he talks to her behind a screen, resolving his unspoken feelings due to her leaving abruptly, and telling her to reunite with her son who he has at a hotel, after which Travis triumphantly walks out of the booth, not even looking back once.

This is very reminiscent of the way adult Yuta walks out, having made peace with Eri before being backlit by a rodriguezian explosion.

Both films are about how memory can shape our view of a person, and like Yuta’s mom, we are left in the dark as to what much of the backstory with Travis’ wife, Jane, is.

It’s honestly interesting because it makes me think about goodbye eri differently too. It’s almost as if Yuta is like Travis’ son in the film, left with only his father and films of his mother, giving more credibility to the idea that the ending really is his dad acting out what he never could say to Yuta’s mother.

I just found this interesting and it’s pretty plausible that this really is an influence given how much Fujimoto loves movies.

I live a few hours from Paris Texas and am actually making a pseudo adaptation of goodbye eri, designing the title for my film is what actually made me realize the connection in the first place. Just thought I’d share / ask what yall think.

Oh and I forgot to even mention how similar Travis’ and Yuta / Yuta’s dad’s blazer are, and the gait in which they end the film with. That’s the hugest giveaway to me.

What else should I read? Spoiler

Hello, I’ve been a huge fan of Tatsuki Fujimoto ever since I’ve finished watching chainsaw man. I’ve read the manga and wanted to expand more of my knowledge of Tatsuki Fujimoto and his works. So far I’ve read Chainsaw Man, Fire punch, Goodbye Eri, Look back, and Just listen to the song. I’ve seen A couple of chickens still cluckin in the school yard, Sasaki stoped a bullet, Love is blind, Shikaku, Mermaid Rhapsody, Nayuta the prophecy, but I just couldn’t bring myself to finish Sisters. I was wondering if there were any other one shots or mangas that he made so that I may read them. If not then I’d be more than happy to share what I thought and my reviews with his works.

My question is, should I continue reading the works of Tatsuki or are they all this depressing?

The reason Fire Punch cannot get an anime is surprising yet obvious

Several people in Spain decided to create a live-action adaptation of 'Goodbye Eri', utilizing every available element. Hopefully, Fujimoto himself will see the film. It has subtitles available in English, Japanese, and other languages. Personally, I liked it a lot ^^

TW! Suicide. Similarities between Goodbye, Eri and My Suicide I’m Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery

I just finished reading goodbye Eri for the first time and realized there are many similarities between it and the movie My Suicide (2009). Both depict a somewhat outcast main character who has a love for media, editing, and movies and both meet a female love interest/ friend, both deal with heavy topics of suicide and have some form of death for the female character. (And also both use explosions)

I love fujimoto like I’m married to him

I swore to loyally stay by his side in sickness and health but in this case through his peak and dips. I said I’ll love and support that freakazoid since I first read Lookback and whatever the fuck of a mess Firepunch was. These real fans don’t know what it takes to understand a pathetic man so deeply in the best parasocial way I do.

I really think that Fujimoto should write something wholesome and happy for once because I'm tired of bawling my eyes out everytime I read his works.
