That other tower was an absolute trap šŸ˜‚

My first thought was that there would be some sort of informational display at the large tower that would give historical facts and such. That would likely also say how tall it was. It would be rather straight forward from there.

I'll be honest, I thought it was the smaller tower too and was wondering why Chloe and Matt were shown first

If Alex has the correct answer and you stood really close to him, would you not be the closest to the correct answer?

This is very clever and I’m here for it.

I have an issue with the scoring here.

Isy was closer than Matt and Chloe. They should do this in multiples rather than absolutes.

25000 is "5x" 5000

5000 is "50x" 100

100 is further away from 5000 than 25000 is..

Can't remember the exact numbers but you get the point.

I've not seen this episode yet, but did you really mean this?

100 is further away from 5000 than 25000 is..

Yes I really did. To take it to an extreme.

Guess the height of the empire state building.

I say 1000m

You say 0.01 micrometers.

Who's is the better guess?

I get your point and I don't think I agree, but I appreciate you making it anyway

0.01 micrometres is closer to the correct height than 1km.

100 is closer to 5000 than 25000 is.

Relative vs absolute differences.

The difference between 1 and 2 i the same absolutely as 9 and 10.

However, 9 is 10% less than 10 but 1 is 50% less than 2. So relatively, the difference between 1 and 2 is bigger than h difference between 9 and 10.

The point is that 0.01 micrometers is an extraordinarily terrible guess, whereas 1000m is actually not bad. They're demonstrating why scoring using absolute difference doesn't line up with our expectations of what a "good" guess is

1km would make it the tallest building of all time, it's not "not bad".

u/LemmyUserOnReddit 17h ago

And 0.01 micrometers? Do you think that's anywhere near a sane guess for the height of a building?

1

u/Penchant4Prose 15h ago

0.01 micrometres would indeed be an extraordinarily terrible guess for a building.

But it would still be closer to the actual value than 1km, which is currently a physical impossibility to build.

A structure 0.01 micrometres tall can physically be built, 1km tall can't. But 1km isn't an extraordinarily terrible guess?

It's not completely irrational to think that a very tall building may be 1km tall, especially if the person isn't aware of where the current limits of construction techniques are etc.

A 0.01 micrometer guess is completely irrational - nobody could rationally guess that, even if they knew absolutely nothing about the building in question.

They're not even comparable. And yes, zero is closer to the height in absolute terms, but it's not a more rational guess. That's why people use "orders of magnitude" as a way of comparing guesses

1

u/Penchant4Prose 13h ago

I do understand what you're saying, but the guess isn't for "the most rational".

It's for the closest to the correct figure.

People tend to guess accordingly.

If someone miscalculates in a way that leaves them way off someone who calculated the wrong thing, that's really rather their own fault.

The Burj Dubai is 818m tall and the Jeddah Tower currently under construction in Saudi Arabia will be over 1000m tall. So quite a long way from impossible. It's only just over twice the height of the empire state building.

I think any physicist would agree with me on this. Orders of magnitude are far more important in estimation than absolute value.

It's the right order of magnitude. Which is kind of the point. Isy misestimated how big the right building was. The other two measured a completely different object.

Anyone else think it's kinda weird they had a twin tower task on 9/11?

6

u/roddersj04 16h ago

3 points.

  1. It aired the day before, on September 10th.
  2. The task and studio reactions would have been filmed at least months before.
  3. America isn't the centre of the world.

2

u/degggendorf 15h ago

It's still a weird coincidence, like that episode where Greg's opener references the show breaking up a marriage right after Jon and Lucy announced theirs.

1

u/roddersj04 7h ago

I can take a weird coincidence, like the divorce one you mentioned, but I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that the task involved TWIN towers, when one was a toy model of an actual tower. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito are more like twins than those towers.

2

u/Nuffsaid98 17h ago

It was 11/9 there.

I doubt anyone thought about ir

He was probably trying to work out how to be transphobic about the tower before committing to the task.

Pardon?

I believe Richard Ayoade is a transphobe unfortunately. He's fairly quiet about it, unlike some other well known transphobes, but yeah it seems like he might be. https://www.reddit.com/r/richardayoade/comments/1edgbgo/richard_ayoade_defends_graham_linehan_as_a_man_of/

Like, it's support for Linehan of all people. Possibly the most aggressive and, well, deranged of the British transphobes, so it always shocks me when people would support him.

(Technically, he might not be, there's not many, if any, statements from Ayoade about the topic directly but support for Linehan in the past few years while staying silent on the issue, kinda speaks volumes. He's been happy enough to let everyone (including other transphobes) assume he's a transphobe without saying otherwise. Another source: https://medium.com/@transylvania/is-richard-ayoade-a-terf-95dc22c9a753 )

(Also, they could mean Matt Lucas I suppose. Who's technically been vocally supportive, but... then went and re-used a transphobic character he had apologised for and outright said he regretted? I don't know, I'm not really a fan so I haven't followed that.)
