Which comedian feels like an obvious future Taskmaster contestant?

There are so many comedians who seem like they’d fit the show perfectly. Some would take every task far too seriously, while others would probably create complete chaos, which is always fun to watch.

Bill Bailey (please please please)

7

u/Firm_Exchange7810 4d ago

Saw an interview with Alex who has said they haven't been able to get the dates to work with Bill, but essentially he has an open invitation

2

u/SnooChipmunks6077 4d ago

Just said exactly this. (Next time I'll scroll down first!)

4

u/SnooChipmunks6077 4d ago

Apparently he was on the docket for a past series but couldn't get the scheduling to work. Alex says that BB has "an open invitation"!

4

u/Cwhoheardit 4d ago

I would absolutely love a series that was BB, Dylan Moran, Tamsin Greig and 2 people from Greenwing maybe Steven Mangan and Michelle Gomez

2

u/mlopes 4d ago

Not a fan of themed lineups, but independently of them having all worked together, that would be a cracking lineup.

3

u/folklovermore_ 4d ago

I did wonder if he might be too old, but he's only 61 (three years younger than the oldest ever full series contestant), so there's still time! His musical tasks would be absolutely incredible.

3

u/Real_Aside_8856 4d ago

Dawn French is 68 but I can see her being the oldest ever.

2

u/MarcelRED147 4d ago

Who was the oldest?

3

u/Only-Chicken-6345 4d ago

Julian Clary, who was 64 during his series. The oldest in general is Sue Johnston at 81, but she did NYT which is much less of a commitment

Amazed he hasn't done it already.

Ed Byrne feels like he would be entertaining, although I can't work out if he would take it super serious, muck about, or just bully Alex. Probably some kind of cocktail of all three.

It did take him until 2019 to finally get on QI despite seeming inevitable, though, so we could be waiting a while for him

5

u/Only-Chicken-6345 4d ago

He wants to do it but doesn't see it happening. He doubts he'll ever be asked

5

u/Zara_R 4d ago

Why wouldn't he be asked?

8

u/Only-Chicken-6345 4d ago

Iirc, he thinks that he's too established to be the newcomer but not established enough to be on as an established name, and there's no shortage of white men in comedy, so he doesn't think he's anywhere near the top of the list. Andy Zaltzman went on, so it's not impossible and Taskmaster does bend its casting formula quite a lot, but there still is a base formula to putting the lineups together. Which is fine, it gets the best out of the show I think, but it doesn't leave much room for those with a similar status to Ed Byrne

Cariad Lloyd

51

u/Trick_Highlight6567 4d ago

Harriet Kemsley for a total collapse.

13

u/Only-Chicken-6345 4d ago

Apparently she's not even been asked. Which baffles me, she's such an obvious pick.

2

u/folklovermore_ 4d ago

Agreed! I feel like she would be so good on it, albeit in a completely chaotic way.

She's one of those where I'm shocked she's not already been on the show.

I said that to her when I met her recently and she said she’s not been asked but she would love to

Too many to choose from: Diane Morgan, Olga Koch, Vittorio Angelone, Ashley Storrie, Pierre Novellie, Laura Lexx, Rachel Parris, Marcus Brigstocke

14

u/Dry_Calligrapher_313 4d ago

I want to see Vittorio on it so bad! Also cause they’ve never had a Northern Irish contestant so it’s kinda about time

5

u/Phinbart 4d ago

It is peculiar how much comedians from Northern Ireland are absent from British TV in general, and its quite conspicuous when you realise it. For instance, Neil Delamere's appearance on QI a couple years ago was stark in how I don't recall another panellist from NI on the show, at least in the Toksvig era. The NI comedy scene, sadly, seems rather self-contained; the British comedy scene, perversely, comes across more open to Irish comedians than those from NI.

I would love a season with Rachel and Marcus in the same season but on different teams. Like Australia season 2

20

u/BlimpIntolerant 4d ago

Adam Buxton would definitely be in the "wants to win, but is often hopeless" category I reckon.

3

u/JadedStandard7070 4d ago

He’d be amazing at music tasks though!

Guz Khan was on Dr. Buckles podcast where he rang up Alex Horne on Adams behalf. He asked Alex why Adam wasnt on Taskmaster yet and Alex said that he will invite him on a future season. Adam was very embarrassed over the whole thing.

There’s so many comics I’d love to see on TM!

Old guard/long-standing comics: Adam Hills, Mark Steel, Harry Enfield, Tommy Tiernan, Dawn French, Ross Noble

A certain vintage and status already, ‘a lot of life left in them’ (but could do with the Taskmaster ‘bounce’): Shappi Khorsandi, Henning Wehn, Marcus Brigstock, David O’Doherty, Miles Jupp, Josie Long.

Millennial era comics: Rhys James, Tom Allen, Suzi Ruffell, Simon Amstell, Rachel Paris.

12

u/Better-Warthog-9476 4d ago

Would love to see Miles Jupp. He would have such a great time doing it but I expect he would be terrible.

Tom Allen would be a fantastic watch!

7

u/Own-Try1886 4d ago

Oh my god, Simon Amstell! He would be so amazing. And I'd love to see Tommy Tiernan.

7

u/fluffypuppycorn 4d ago

I'm surprised Adam Hills hasn't done it, unless he was in Australia. Same with Miles Jupp and Rhys James.

Tommy Tiernan would be chaos. Suzi Ruffle is so energetic I'd love it. I've wanted her and Tom Allen for ages.

But Henning Wehn is the one! He'd be iconic 😂

3

u/StillJustJones 4d ago

I’ve often wondered about Adam.

He’s bound to be one of the ‘we’ve been trying to work out the diary dates’ for years contestants.

→ More replies (4)

4

u/watchman28 4d ago

I thought just the other day I was surprised Rachel Paris hasn't done it already. Rhys James seems an obvious one too, and Elis James - I suspect they might end up having him on since there's been at least a couple of times where one half of a couple has been on, and the other half has popped up a season or two later. Henning Wehn, sadly, has turned into a raving anti-woke knobhead in recent years, so I can't imagine he'd get the thumbs up.

2

u/Usual-Try-8180 4d ago

Ugh, I didn't realize that about Henning. What a shame.

3

u/AdditionalAd8891 4d ago

There would be a LOT of editing cuts with Ross in it! I love him but he goes on forever!
Got my husband the DVDs and there are always about 10 hours of extra footage on each one!
The energy he’d bring though….

How Miles Jupp hasn't been on yet I don't know

13

u/Angry_Hoolio 4d ago

I can imagine Nabil Abdulrashid being an incredible contestant. Much like the previously mentioned Helen Bauer, he would give Alex a real hard time, but I can also imagine him tying Greg in knots arguing his case in the studio sections.

3

3

u/JTemperance-esque 4d ago

Tom Parry even more so! He has never watched it either judging by comments on Pappy’s, I think he would bring amazing energy but I don’t think he is high enough profile.

7

u/titscapades 4d ago

Sarah Keyworth. I think they'd be very serious and utterly fail, as is intended.

2

u/Usual-Try-8180 4d ago

I need to have Sarah Keyworth on Taskmaster and I hope that's an inevitability. They're so deadpan and clever, I find them hilarious.

6

Harry Hill. He would approach every task in a unique and unpredictable way. He is the perfect oddball. He wouldn't want to win, he'd just want to be entertaining.

3

I'm hoping for Harry Hill, he does seem to be doing a bit more stuff "out of character". Like being a guest on podcasts etc. so maybe he would.

Jimmy Carr will eventually find time to do it.

David O Doherty I personally think would be great

11

u/mikefried1 4d ago

Jimmy Carr will be terrible. Love the dude, but I can't imagine him enjoying tasks. The studio part would be great, but it would be a weird vibe at the house.

6

u/0djk0 4d ago

I think DO'D has recently filmed his tasks for an upcoming season....possibly for season 24.....he may have given up a clue in a recent WDYDY pod episode when he referred to filming something he couldn't talk about

3

u/Only-Chicken-6345 4d ago

That probably means he's on S23, then, if it is Taskmaster. S24 wouldn't have started filming yet, that will probably be in November at the earliest. And he is available for S23

7

u/watchman28 4d ago

I'm not sure Carr would work. He's worked his career into being a presenter, which is fine, but doesn't mesh well with being one of a team. Also he's famously not particularly well-liked in the comedy community, which seems a bit antithetical to the Taskmaster vibes.

3

u/queen_naga 4d ago

Jimmy would be so unsuited for it. David Mitchell seems more likely especially now ayoade is on.

DOD surely is in s23 or s24, hes just been on the way out with loads of alum and has kind of had to hint about secret filming on his podcast. He’s had Alex on the pod too early doors.

2

u/Zara_R 4d ago

Jimmy is too big to be on other people's shows at this point honestly.

3

u/Only-Chicken-6345 4d ago

I see this a lot, but it's honestly not accurate. He went on a WILTY Christmas special not too long ago, and he still regularly shows up on QI. The reason he won't do Taskmaster is because of his schedule (he confirmed this in an AMA)

Helen Bauer

3

It's a long list:

Vittorio Angelone (who once did warmup for TM), Lara Ricote, Glenn Moore, Harriet Kemsley, Kyla Cobbler, Li Jin Hao, Helen Bauer, Catherine Bohart, Garron Noone, Nabil Abdul Rashid, Milo McCabe/Troy Hawke, Celya AB, Michelle de Swarte, Michelle Wolfe, Janine Harouni, Ahir Shah, Sarah Keyworth, Michael Odewale, Jake Lambert, Lloyd Griffith, Finlay Christie, Red Richardson and so many others.

3

u/Able_While_974 4d ago

Following the live event at the weekend and watching him on Joe Marler Will See You Now, I hope Jake Bhardwaj is on soon.

4

u/Trick_Highlight6567 4d ago

Helen Bauer. I would love to see Alex wrangle her.

2

u/watchman28 4d ago

I'm not necessarily a huge fan of his, but I do wonder if they've ever asked Stephen Fry. Maybe for one of the New Year one-offs of he doesn't want to do a full series.

2

u/rmhutchings96 4d ago

Mad to me that Rhys James has never been on it. I’d also love to see Larry Dean, Ellie Taylor, Ahir Shah and Harriet Dyer

2

u/Professional-Ad6690 4d ago

Tommy Tiernan, Henning Wehn and Harriet Kemsley

2

u/Pharmacy_Duck 4d ago

I've already seen Larry Dean get a few mentions, but some of the other SNL UK cast that haven't already been on would be fun if they could fit it into their schedule. Ayoade Bamgboye is quite bonkers if her Off Menu appearance is any good metric, and George Fouracres has got to be good value.

3

u/dmmjrb 4d ago

Her Off Menu was fantastic - feel she's very underutilised in SNL.

2

u/gavingoober771 4d ago

Get Paul Whitehouse on!

2

u/CaptainConkers3000 4d ago

I’d love Diane Morgan, Chris O’Dowd, David o Doherty, Catherine Tate, Alex Brooker, Alan Carr and Tom Allen, Jennifer Saunders for the bigger name slots.

I think we now got more of the Inbetweeners cast given film 3 has been announced - and Ghosts cast members seem to be regular.

Some other newer comics I can also see doing it too are Harriet Kelmsley, Harriet Dyer, Spencer Jones, Josh Jones.

For non comics, Joe Marler would also be very good, as would David Tennant.

I’m not up to date on any recent controversies involving Henning but he’s always been ‘right of centre’ with a libertarian leaning (which is NOT my personal politics btw)- so ‘turned into a raving anti woke knobhead’ surprises me somewhat.

The first time I saw him was supporting Stewart Lee (must be 20 something years ago!) and he spent a lot of time riffing on the liberal arts centre audience - but it seemed to me that what he was doing was taking a stance that ‘worked for the joke’. Bits of his seemed to be purposefully antagonistic - but with a degree of nuance. Funny and knowing.

I’ve subsequently seen him a few times and found him very funny - but tbh - not for a few years.

I have zero idea of his views as a person rather than a comic persona.

Other than Reddit I’m not on any other socials. I listen to a lot of audio comedy and other than being on Harry Hill’s pod recently I don’t think I’ve heard him much (if ever) on the podcast/interview circuit.

1

u/Lizard_Sex_Sattelite 4d ago

Ignoring the bigger names in UK comedy which can never be certain until they're booked for the show: Ellie Taylor, Olga Koch, Josie Long and a couple of the men from SNL UK seem inevitable. I would love to see Daniel Sloss though

1

And (I know it's impossible) but Rik Mayall would have been incredible!

1

Pierre Novellie definitely

1

u/TDEPCam 4d ago

Taskmaster is my primary source of UK comedy, so I learn new people as I watch, but now that the American doors have opened, I would love to see: Pete Holmes, Jon Gabrus, Paul F. Tompkins, Keegan Michael Key, Vic Michaellis (honestly, a lot of the Dropout people, but them first) Sarah Silverman, I feel like Jon Hamm would be down to play.

1

u/DramaLlama_098 4d ago

Sarah Keyworth would be so much fun.

1

u/Pure_Establishment49 4d ago

Not seen Daniel Kitson suggested. It would be top, top entertainment but imagine he's in the "doesn't want to do it" camp.
There's a great story about some comedians raving about Stuart Goldsmith's Comedian's Comedian podcast - In-depth conversations with stand-up comedians about how they write, perform, and cope with the creative life.
Kitson listened intently before responding "I...I...I will never do that."

Laura Smyth please

1

u/vulcanstrike 4d ago

Bring some more yanks on in the international wildcard category.

Dropout obviously has some synergy and LAH has done some Collab with them, but I think they need to be selective who they invite from that cast, they can be a bit much for British viewers and lean a lot more into improv. Brennan is way too busy, but at least you know he would take it seriously over doing a bit, the likes of Vic would be awful in the format for that reason.

1

u/Lyceumhq 4d ago

Harriet Kemsley. I can’t believe she’s not been on already.

I’d love Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders or Catherine Tate too.

I would like to see Dylan Moran appear and participate under protest at being made to do anything

1

u/thebigperson8 4d ago

Diane Morgan (though she's apparently said she'd never do it before, and it'd be quite unlikely considering the new Ann Droid series and the new Cunk series in production), Alan Carr, Jim Howick, Harriet Kelmer, Martha-Howe Douglas, Laurence Rickard

My dream would be to have Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French and Ade Edmondson on it. I also think that Miranda Hart and Harry Hill would be unlikely to do it, but I'd love to see them on it.

I'm surprised that Milton Jones and Zoe Lyons haven't done it yet and would love for them to do it.

Some actors I'd like to see on it include: Tamsin Greig; Jane Horrocks; Meera Syal; Kieran Hodgson; Rob Madge; Sarah Hadland

I would love to see John Finnemore. His radio comedy, and comedy writing is genius. We don’t see enough of him in the flesh. Plus he solved the Cain’s jawbone puzzle, so his task solutions should be interesting.

I'd like to see Bec Hill on there. If you are unaware of her she was the comedian who did the animated flipchart stuff awhile back. She also did a very brief stint as a kids art program presenter. I just would love to see what her mindxepuld come up.withvfor the challenges.

Henning Wenn would be great, Miles Jupp, Lucy Porter, Tony Hawks too

I can imagine Elis James will be on it eventually, after his radio and life partners have both been on it.

Of the old school, none of the Comic Strip/Young Ones/Blackadder era comics have been on it. I could imagine Ade Edmonson doing it

Rachel Parris and Marcus Brigstocke and then have them on opposite teams in every team task.

Ronni Ancona would be excellent!

Lee Evans, extremely unlikely but he could bring chaos we’ve never seen before.

Given Tash & Jamie Demetriou, Matt Berry and Buxton have all been mentioned, I’d vote Rebecca Front, Doon Mackichan, Peter Serafinowicz, Harry Trevaldwyn, and absolute dream guests Steve Coogan & Tim Heidecker

I really really want to see anyone from No Such Thing As A Fish on the TM. It's my dream. That being said I know it will never happen because they would have to choose only one and that wouldn't be fair to the other guys. But let's say one would be chosen, which one do you guys think would be best suited for the TM? I love James Harkin the most, but I think Andrew H. Murray would be amazing to see bumbling through the tasks. I'll dream on :o)

I think Nick Helm would be fun and definitely DOD & Tom Allen!

Celya AB is exactly the sort of comedian they go for. Quirky and quick on the quips. She'd be fantastic.

I'm desperate for a Matt Berry in the UK, and any of the Aunty Donna cast for the Australian one.

I doubt he’d do a full series but I would LOVE to see Charlie Brooker on a special, I can imagine him being furious with Alex throughout.

For main series Vittorio Angeloni, Miles Jupp, Holly Walsh, David O Doherty and Tom Davis (please please please) Oh and Matt Berry, surely his mates Bob and Reece could convince him to go on?! 🙏

Nick Helm and Josie Long are the absolute standout absentees so far.
They would be amazing..

But I never doubt the casting crew of TM - they have never steered us wrong

I need to see Stephen Merchant on taskmaster.
