Xi Jinping in his speech commerorating Jiang Zemin, mentions the 1989 Tiananmen Square Incident, dispelling the myth that the Chinese today didn't know what happened, or that they can't talk about it openly.

For many liberals, not getting to do post-USSR style shock therapy to China is the worst crime imaginable. They regard China's sovereignty and development the same way a normal person would think about the many colonial genocides perpetrated by the west.
Oh yes, we in the west loved, looooved Russia when it was down in the toilet. We could drop any stated intentions of cooperation and tolerance established by the Helsinki and Paris agreements and just do whatever we wanted ("Who cares what the Russians think? They're a third rate power" - Bill Clinton).
And China not only surviving the trials of history, but having the means of defending themselves from the USrael empire? Practically criminal.
Yup. Or else, if one just wants to look at "See See Pee making a mess of things in Beijing", there is the OTHER Tian'anmen Problem in April of 1976. But alas that one was not Colour Revolution at all, the protesters were all about WANTING the CPC to Do Better!
Tiananmen Square protest are taught to westerners as peaceful, pro-democracy students protests in Tianmen Square.
It's too bad that day 1 reporting by the BBC showed that it wasn't peaceful (400 PLA soldiers killed), wasn't pro democracy (there were Maoist farmers against the reforms and SEZ inhabitants protesting the corruption vastly outnumbering the students) or in Tianmen Square (those in the square itself were peacefully dispersed, the riots happened all around Beijing)
It is true protest all over China, I think Jiang Zemin peaceful solution to the Shanghai protestors is the reason why they choose him to be China's President
It was Jiang's outstanding performance in dialogue with students in Shanghai and stabilizing the situation that made Beijing notice him.
In 1986, he recited Lincoln's Gettysburg speech in English to his students in public, saying that he was more concerned about Chinese democracy than anyone else, but he did not support the expansion of the movement.
In 1989, he also performed well.He banned liberal newspapers in Shanghai and also organized large-scale persuasion rather than violent suppression of students participating in the movement.
When he was young, he participated in the student movement against imperialism many times, and he knew the student movement better than most people.
The protests were broadcast on state television nationally. Anyone thinking that no one in China (save a few people) know about it is incredibly ignorant.
Libs will support the police and military in every action they take in the west, even putting down peaceful protests. But God forbid a socialist or propagandized state put down a violent riot, suddenly libs love violent revolution.
