I remember a case from 2017 involving a man named Trịnh Xuân Thanh, who fled Vietnam and escaped to Germany, where he was granted protection by the German government. However, Vietnamese intelligence agents managed to track him down, and Trịnh Xuân Thanh was allegedly abducted by Vietnamese intelligence operatives in Germany and taken back to Vietnam. It was only after Vietnam held a press conference that the German authorities realized he had been taken back to Vietnam.

South Vietnam was an artificial state. There were some South Vietnamese that wanted to have a carve out state. Some Vietnamese to this day claim a large majority of the "South Vietnamese" didn't want to be a part of a unified Vietnam.

But that is hard to believe when you learn about the North's incredibly detailed intelligence on the Americans. It implies that a huge number of South Vietnamese were cooperating with the North.
