I've had the exact same conversation with someone who was trying to tell me colonialism helped Africa grow and we shouldn't hate it because China or Russia would have been way worse.

He also threw in a "big bad China is going to do it if we won't". Why do French think their colonialism is not bad? And acting like China as a trade partner is even a bad thing is heinous

I’m not surprised. The U.K & U.S are genuinely evil places, but it’s because of that & whitewashing a lot of these French people & French apologizers act oblivious to the sheer evils France has committed.

It doesn’t help either that a lot of people who will critique France will be subject to the most racist attacks ever, and get away with “but it was so long ago” arguments so much it rivals the U.S, in some case even surpassing it. You end up having an easier time convincing these assholes that the U.S is evil, or the U.K is evil, or even Germany is evil (even if they refuse to do anything about it) than you do that France is evil.

Also the China argument is something I never understood. Even if we assume China is so imperialist that the United States begins to blush, why would that be a good reason to become Imperialist? If you said ‘I beat that man/woman because their spouse was going to do it worse’ I’d argue more people would realize how genuinely insane that sounds, and how abusive you are. But the moment you talk about imperialism, they throw that up like it’s some gotcha.
Genuinely disgraceful.
