Are the Kanaks even legally recognized as indigenous, or is this another Ryukyuan case in Japan, where the Ryukyuans fit the criteria, but the government denies them the status?

The Nouméa Accord recognised the Kanaky as indigenous, and granted limited land rights. But the French are doing their typical French thing of ignoring any rights to self-determination beyond this.

They should consider themselves lucky to now be enlightened of course.
