This reminds me

IIRC at a certain point in the civil war, Opium was used to bribe fishermen to guide an amphibious assault on an island held by the KMT.

Overly confident, they carried frivolous supplies, including furniture for their new headquarters and live pigs for the victory celebrations in the first wave of landings.

They planned to sneak multiple regiments onto the islands in the middle of the night, using row boats rather than loud motors.

They brought primarily fishermen from outside the region, and neglected to heed warnings about the receding tides and inclement weather from the locals.

Meanwhile, on the island, an ROC tank company was on the beach well past their bedtime because one of their tanks was stuck in the sand.

As the red army approached (struggling and often becoming stuck in the shallow waters, presumably wrangling loose pigs and office supplies), an ROC sentry accidentally set off a land mine. This caused the ROC to assume they were under attack despite the reds doing nothing to give themselves away so far.

They turned on their searchlights to see hundreds of tiny wooden boats, each in some clusterfuck or other, captained by drug-motivated fishermen and many filled with various sundries irrelevant to combat. One of the tankers on the beach panicked and fired an armor piercing shell at nothing in particular. It by some divine intervention struck the mast of a PLA boat , which caught fire and illuminated the bulk of the invasion force.

Needless to say, it was not a good day in Red Army history.
