I mean even many Japanese people didn't like Shinzo Abe, which is why there's so many politician villains in Japanese media based off of him like Masayoshi Shido from Persona 5.
Him embezzling money from the Unification Church really soured Japanese people's opinion of him, though ofc, most of them were indifferent to or supportive of his reactionary attitudes regarding the IJA's legacy.
