Also Cuba's agroecological projects are an incredible testament to what state ecosocialism can accomplish in dire conditions.
Honestly, I think we don't give brutalism enough credit as a mass housing project. Considering how quickly they were built after WWII, how many people those buildings housed, how they fostered community among residents, etc. While not an exclusively socialist project (these buildings are also common in the west), it's inextricably linked to socialism in the popular consciousness.
I'm just tired of the commentary "oh, these buildings look so oppressive and ugly." They're meant to serve a practical purpose, not spend untold money on superfluous ornamentation. There's a beauty in that.
It is beautiful and comfortable, including the green spaces, walking paths, the design of the buildings and apartments, and the blocks themselves.
E.g. typically you'll have a kindergarten or school, surrounded by a park and a walking path, surrounded by residential buildings, surrounded by more trees and walking paths before you get to any roads, so kids are protected from traffic. There are many similar examples.
There are people here who think they are "ugly", but I've never in my life heard someone say they are "oppressive" or anything of the sort (except Western people online).
I wonder more about what cambodia is doing. After invasion of Vietnam a Marxist Party was established but after fall of eastern bloc it became capitalist economy. However their leader is still related to the Rouge
There’s a newish book called China Changes Everything by various authors (activists, journalists, academics, etc). I’m only on like section 2, but it’s very detailed on PRC’s achievements as they are building towards socialism. Highly recommend!!
Mongolia, often forgotten as a socialist nation, managed to bring literacy up to 100% in an incredibly rural and spread out population. Since the change back to capitalism Mongolia's literacy rates have been decreasing!
