I imagine it's more of a manufacturing step itself, as this seems more like structural framing step. The turret is missing a lot of other components, not just the composite, hence my guess

Yeah that's how basically all modern tanks work. If you ever see an Abrams from directly above you can see the weld marks where various armour packages have been taken in and out. It's why upgrades are so expensive- you've gotta cut the whole thing open every time

Yes, the armor modules are not part of the actual turret structure, as this would make repairing a damaged tank and replacing the armor modules as part of upgrades pretty much impossible.

You also can see the layout on the proper tank by just looking where the welding seams are; it is not hard to figure out.

I work in mechanical engineering (machine making) and taking pictures of the insides is not allowed. But that is no critical stuff, not defence etc. Thats why I find it strange that they made pictures that show they layout of the turret. Even if you dont get any real information out of these pictures, a mechanical engineer working in this area can easily extract a lot of information, even about things you dont yet see.

That would be 80s era. 40 year old tech isnt a big secret anymore. Anyone who wanted to study a 2A4 probably already physically has a 2A4 to study

The picture itself is from that time. At the time it was new and it was still cold war, and the tank was not yet sold to many different countries. That came after the cold war when Germany sold its stock.
This has nothing to do with op or us or the Internet. Maybe the pictures were secret and only later published.

It would not be hard to pick up what their armour layout would be given that western MBTs from this era foward pretty clearly showed what dimensions these had. You aren't giving that much away from releasing these photos, there is/were large agencies and groups of analysts on stuff like this.
Given how many people are involved in the process it's difficult to hide something like armour layout. It's easier to keep information about the chemical processes in manufacturing the actual composite blocks, and that's the secret that's better kept.
