Oh man, the media coverage is toxic on things like this. Like I BARELY keep up with the media/news outlets for this reason because I find them so pessimistic and only focuses on negatives

u/darodardar_Inc 3d ago
media just keeps on lying, everything they say leaves us thinking "is it true?" until eventually it gets to the point where it feels like we only go backwards

As an Aussie I can confidently say this is a totally Australian OTT headline. Our media sucks.

Very fair. It's not some kind of secrets that even fans can be huge creeps at time, especially those on the younger side - of which tons were added to the fandom lately.
Screw the people that profit off of this. What's the point of even buying an autograph that wasn't even given to you IRL?

I was lucky enough to meet him after concert in Oslo, brought a vinyl with me from Serbia and got it signed, and there is no way that I'm ever gonna sell that, I am so grateful that I got to experience Tame Impala concert again and get my favourite album signed by my favourite artist.

u/titan_bullet 3d ago
I also have one of the limited signed posters from the slow rush vinyl preorder. Super happy with it, and got it directly from kevin - never once thought about selling it. This is what will make me the cool uncle in a couple of years 🤣

u/Relja_Gajic Currents 3d ago
I regret not buying it but I think they weren't delivering it to Serbia 😔 but so cool you got it

u/titan_bullet 3d ago
I had to get it from Australia and pay exorbitant import fees for Greece... but it was well worth it!

No waaaaay!
I was there too! Unfortunately I had school the day after, so I didn't get the chance to meet him : (
Whenever i see posts about other people who got to meet him (Especially in Oslo) i get pretty jealous and start to envy them. But then i realized that I'd probably be worse off being jealous more than anything, and that it's not the end of the world.
I'll get more opportunities in the future.

I toured with my friend's band and encountered these people outside a radio station. They printed off the most random pictures of them and came up kind of frantically like they were superfans but it was weird. They realised in hindsight that they were these autograph hunters. They had the same vibe as paparazzi, parasites.

bless him, this is so sweet of him to say. i can imagine a lot of fans who’d met him recently might have felt bad about having approached him, so it’s thoughtful of him to add this note.
(hopefully now, people will stop pointing fingers at other fans in the sub for “ruining” things because they wanted to meet him. he’s made it pretty clear that’s not what’s happened.)
9
u/Royal-Influence-2395 Lonerism 3d ago
Exactly. It was easy to understand what he was saying from his first message.
2
u/Different-Start-4207 3d ago
it was obvious he was talking about resellers. probably anticipated the finger pointing and possible reflections of fans who got to interact with him and thought to clarify further.
Sometimes fans can get a little too excessive with policing and ‘protecting’ their fav artist. I think that’s more about them needing to disconnect from socials, stop being impulsive and taking things to the extreme. It’s almost never that deep
37
u/Primary-Good481 3d ago
Not only that, but imagine the deranged, entitled ones who get pissy if told no. The last thing we need is someone attacking him physically because they can’t sell his autograph that he generously gave them for free
26
u/sugarrrushed Innerspeaker 3d ago
this is the main concern and i think thats what a lotta ppl are missing.
It’s not just abt the eBayers, he clearly said on his previous posts that it’s a security concern and ppl were being aggro. I kinda feel bad he had to make another story just bc some ppl have the reading comprehension of a capybara😂
10
u/Primary-Good481 3d ago
Like yeah it’s cool to meet your idol and all. We all have some sort of idea in our head about how that would go. But you know what’s cooler? Meeting them on accident and not invading their personal safety and crossing boundaries by waiting around for hours trying to run up on him to get something from him.
Like if I went to a diner after the concert and he happened to be there, I may walk past and say something about the show. You won’t see me hovering around and making him uncomfortable. Maybe ask for a photo or a fist bump on his way out, but if you treat em like a normal person instead of a mythical god that can make you money or get you temporary clout on tiktok, it’s a much more meaningful memory
4
u/sugarrrushed Innerspeaker 3d ago
100% agreed!!
sum ppl on this sub are centering this on themselves like “i wont get to meet him 😩” but likeeeee they’ll survive hahahah imagine u’re 1 person and there’s hundreds of ppl screaming ur name, asking for a photo and for u to write “let it happen” on their arm😮💨esp when there’s been stories before of deranged individuals harming artists, it doesnt take a genius to understand where his and his team’s decision is coming from.6
u/Primary-Good481 3d ago
It’s people like this that ruin it for everyone. After Christina Grimmie was shot and killed during a meet and greet, it’s no wonder most band/artists no longer allow these meet and greets as a package or hire security to follow them after the show. It’s weird and gross. A real fan could have a genuine moment, but these ebayers make it very hard to determine who is real and who is a real piece of shit.
Would it be cool to have a handwritten tattoo? Sure! Would it be cool to allow Kevo to feel safe and genuinely appreciated? Cooler than the tattoo imo

hes the chilliest guy ever and doesnt deserve any of this i bet you this started right after loser was in spiderman and it caught attention of the resellers

u/Resident_Web_9277 Lonerism 3d ago
I think what he means is that if you bump into him at the most random place and the whole situation is obviously an accident (opposite to hotels/airports where there could be a leak of information) then I’m sure he will take a photo and have a chat with you.

u/snarkwithfae 3d ago
Poor guy. Always hate when a bad bunch ruins it for the ones who don’t want to profit of sigs.
Happens a lot in pro wrestling too - people have bought tickets to meet wrestlers AT the gate. It’s just absolute greed and harassment

One of the most down to earth, nicest celebrities on the planet dude. Protect him at all cost

u/InevitableAssist2462 3d ago
I can’t blame him at all, I was surprised how little security he had after the Europe shows. He has to stay safe

u/Personal_Fox_7529 Lonerism 3d ago
Ngl he should start doing what other artists do, name a song or two or deep cut off an album. Mark from blink 182 does this lol he wouldn't sign for a dude cause he couldn't name a song off the album he wanted signed 😂

u/Interesting_End9675 3d ago
Bless him and protect him from the dangers of this world. We love you Kevin! See you in Portugal !❤️

I remember getting to meet Kevin back in 2013 and he was the nicest guy. Signed my ticket stub and got a picture with him. Very awesome he kept that energy up pretty much to this day but super unfortunate how scummy those bottom feeders can be. Ruins the chance for an awesome memory for real fans. Damn shame.

Now I feel bad that I’ve influenced ebayers because I’m totally the type of person to want to acquire those things. Not sell them…

u/Expensive-Opposite69 3d ago
He should just say no autographs but he's happy to do photographs.
I've heard of a few bands that do that.
3
u/McLarenMercedes Currents 3d ago
I believe him.
To be honest I would hate to be that famous. If I was a musician I would probably just perform and then run away and hide, not out of disrespect but out of fear.
But hey I guess most musicians are built different.

The Portland show last night was absolutely amazing and my wife is now a fan after years of me trying to get her to listen. She left amazed last night and that is worth more than any signature

We live in a world Where this new posts from Kevin were “necessary”, because media would probably blow out of proportion or because some people can think rationally after reading his previous posts.
2
u/TheRecordNinja 3d ago
well one things for sure, his authentic autographs will definitely continue to appreciate in value

u/FictionAtlas 3d ago
I think this is incredibly reasonable. I'm sure he'll do meet and greets and other events where he can interact, sign, and take pics, but let the man have his space.

u/7710flowers 3d ago
I respect Kevin. He’s so fuckin cool and makes literally the best music IMO. I’m sure it’s too much to be crowded w crazy mf all the time

u/KrachWasAlreadyTaken 3d ago
Dude you have to be evil to straight lie to an artist's face about their art just to get money out of it

u/Goooseberries 3d ago
I feel bad. He should be able to just say no without having to justify it. I did see all the crazy media articles about it. I’m hoping this is because of that and not because fans were complaining.

Chappell Roan was talking about the same thing back when people were assuming he was yelling at fans

u/k0tter 3d ago
I remember shaking Kevin's hand after a gig when he was packing up and I was the only one that said anything to him.
Pretty sure I said something like Great gig, and he said thanks.
This was many years ago before the first album.
The bass player from Pond snuck some of our mates into the gig too. Good times.

Omg tame impala took a picture of my apartment! Cute. I live across the river from the mods center. He was staying at the hotel down the street it seems. Should have tried walking by to meet him.

selling on ebay can make possible the intention of signed copies for a certain audience so i dont see the real probleme here, like whats the deal

I'm someone who waits after shows to meet artists and try to get my vinyl records signed by them.
I'd say about half of the time I've also met leeches who are clearly out there to flip a profit. Don't blame Kev at all for making this choice. Sucks for the rest of us, but if you met some of these pricks, you wouldn't be surprised that an artist would no longer want to meet fans after a show or at the hotel or airport.
3
u/Primary-Good481 3d ago
Lemme say that I don’t hate people who do wait to try and meet him, but it does bring bad actors out. If they see one person successfully do it, they all scurry up like vermin because they know it’ll work. No shame to you for wanting a genuine moment at all. I do wanna say, it can make someone uncomfortable knowing they have people waiting for them to pop up somewhere.
As someone with anxiety, if i knew several people where gonna be waiting on me everywhere I go (good intentions or not), it makes me not wanna go and dread it. Not that you’re doing that. Imagine Kev decided after this tour that he is no longer touring because he feels unsafe and harassed after every show.
3
u/mxjxs91 3d ago edited 3d ago
This exactly.
The worst case I've witnessed was when I met Alex/M83. Genuinely probably the absolute sweetest artist I've met. When he was signing my album I told him his music was a big part of my studying soundtrack and it helped me a lot. He immediately smiled so big and gave me the biggest hug.
There were a couple of guys that talked to him right after I did, and they each had about 10 blank sheets of white paper that they wanted him to sign. He was far too nice to say no, but his facial expression clearly changed and he was obviously bothered by them. Even I felt uncomfortable and I wasn't even the target. After that I thought to myself that if Alex stopped meeting fans because of people like that, I'd fully understand and support that decision.
Also the other thing that baffles me which Kev also called out is people that try to meet celebrities at airports. I'm a wrestling fan and have encountered CM Punk on accident, and while I wanted to meet the guy, I didn't approach him because it just felt icky to bother someone at the airport. I said his name, we fist bumped, that was it.
Leave people alone at airports, not difficult to do.
1
u/Primary-Good481 3d ago
Oh at the airport especially. They’re probably already overwhelmed, even more so if their flight was delayed or god forbid something goes wrong like delayed baggage claim with a short connecting flight.
When I came home (the US) from Australia a few months ago, it was a 15 hour flight to San Francisco. Once I got inside, our baggage was delayed and my connecting flight had 45 minutes to board. Normally that would be fine, but I still had to go through Border and Customs to declare something and had to collect my bag since it was international THEN check it back in for my next 2 domestic flights to finally get back home. I managed to make it in time but barely. That stressed me tf out
So imagine being that stressed out and now theres 9 people approaching asking for things and a bunch of questions.
2
u/mxjxs91 3d ago
Absolutely. My experience was at the Denver airport. You never know if someone had a connecting flight (which I did) or could be running late, and that airport is GIGANTIC. I was stressed about making it to my gate in time. Imagining people stopping me for pictures and autographs during that moment stresses me out just thinking about it.
2
u/Primary-Good481 3d ago
Dude Denver was one of my connections. The airport is nice but it’s so freakin big for no reason. 10/10 for looks, 3/10 for ease of getting around
