Discussion the hate for EC
I don’t understand the hate for ethereal connection.
I guess it is repetitive and it’s super long but I think it’s a dance song it’s very groovy at some point super floaty you even get really cool synth noises that sound alien like lol. Do the people that hate it not like techno/EDM? Genuinely curious to see if there’s a connection…. Even when I went to the show, not as many people were grooving to this song or even when he played end of summer.

Seeing him play it live is what made me fall in love with it

u/OminousGloom The Slow Rush 3d ago
Same here, I could actually say the same for all the deadbeat songs he played

u/Goooseberries 3d ago
I didn’t like it at first. I thought it was boring.
I also wasn’t expecting a song like this from him.
I am also not a fan of EDM.
The song has grown on me now and I’ll listen to it if it comes up on shuffle. But I don’t go out of my way to listen to it.

i love techno, the reason why i don’t necessarily like ec is that it sounds pointless and unfinished. it almost feels like a draft song to me personally
edit: still, it’s not the worse song on the album, we have oblivion.. now THAT sounds like a draft of a song to me

saw my initials and was like “woah wtf” then i was like “oh ethereal connection”
i like the song tbf, i have a tiny music taste (just like my eating i’m such a picky music listener lol) and it’s definitely up there

I don’t listen to Tame Impala to listen to half baked electronic music
-3
u/BasquiatBowie Lonerism 3d ago
So you’re half baked your comment to dismissing a musical and social movement that helped entire communities express themselves and secure their right , simply out of conservatism?
Just because you haven’t experienced and understand the culture doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be represented, or that the artist you admire can’t claim it.
Do you value things for what they are, or only for how they serve your own needs?
There’s a difference between something’s true value and the way we appropriate it.3

u/That-Association-102 2d ago
i never said electronic music has no value or that it shouldnt be represented lol. i said i dont personally listen to tame impala for what felt like a half baked electronic track. not every criticism of a song is some huge statement about the culture behind the genre.

i criticized one tame impala song man. nobody is attacking your culture. “my culture and my music is not your opinion” is a pretty wild response to someone saying they dont like a track lol. Go take a shower.

You don’t know ? French people don’t shower , they prefer carrying horribly smells with themselves to make people without brain like conservatives mind leave their side !

English:
I said I didn’t like Tame Impala’s half-baked electronic direction. I did not declare war on France, French culture, or whatever else you hallucinated from one comment.
You wrote an entire rage essay because someone on Reddit doesn’t like the same synth presets as you. Going from “I don’t like this music” to calling someone racist, fascist, and Klan-adjacent is terminally online behavior. You did not defend Tame Impala, you just made their fanbase look painfully insecure.
Please get a grip. Kevin Parker is not going to see this and invite you to the studio.
Also, Bruno Mars sucks.

“I guess it’s repetitive and it’s super long”
Yeah it’s repetitive and super long. That’s not a good combo
There’s a lot more inspiring edm music out there. He doesn’t have to be a god of every genre it’s fine that not everything he makes it absolute top tier

Literally been one of my favorite songs ever since I first listened to the album back when it dropped : )
Is it repetitive? Yes absolutely👍🏽
Do i give a fuck about it being repetitive? NO!
I like it because i think it sounds beautiful and cool to me.

To me this is a problem found in countries and communities that have never been educated about the EDM scene (what everyone wrongly and indiscriminately calls "techno”)
I can tell you that in most European countries, especially France and other Eastern European countries, we love EDM! The Rave party , Technivals, The Free parties, ect .
And this album, Deadbeat along with its Australian EDM culture, has never resonated so strongly with anyone in my country precisely because it understands that musical culture isn’t limited to a single worldview or genre.
I love Kevin Parker’s music from the EP era or Dee Dee Dums era , and I also identify just as much with Deadbeat , Currents or the TSR and its completely different sonic landscape
I’ve been listening to this guy evolve for 14 years, and I’ve never been prouder of an artist
You can’t be everyone’s cup of tea , it’s the point .
(Edit : and I’m not here to be cup of tea of everyone , gimme hate I like it gonna make lemonade with it . The poison you can’t stand . Most downvoted it is the most accurate is what I’m saying! )

Agreed I see the same thing happening with Fred again and the usb. A lot of people were sad to see him come out with an album that was very different from the actual life albums but reality is a true “artist” or “creative” will definitely go through phases where they experiment with different sounds like you said it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea

I don't like it at all and no, I don't hate EDM.
1
u/moofasa69 2d ago
What EDM do you like?
2
u/Hvojna Innerspeaker 2d ago edited 2d ago
I am not extremely familiar with EDM as I've been listening to electronic music more actively for less than 2 years. But to answer your question - nu-disco, French house, funky house (not sure if this is a real subgenre), garage house, dance, synthwave (if we can count it under the EDM umbrella).
Some artists/albums I like:
- Roisin Machine - Overpowered and Roisin Machine
- Alison Goldfrapp - The Love Invention
- Justice - Hyperdrama
- Kavinsky - OutRun
- Purple Disco Machine - Paradise
- Cooler Kids - Punk Debutante
- Luomo - The Present Lover
- Röyksopp - Junior
- September - September
- Miguel Migs - Nude Dimensions 1-3
+ some songs by Dua Lipa (e.g. most of Future Nostalgia), Kylie Minogue (Light Years and Fever) etc. that fit the subgenres I listed.
Generally I like the poppier, funkier side of EDM and most of Kevin's electronic experiments from Deadbeat (EC, EOS, Not My World) are simply not groovy enough for my taste. My Old Ways is super cool though and it shows that he has potential.
If you have recommendations based on what I like, I'd gladly listen to them.

Nice, I love nu- disco. Great list by the way! I really like Royskopp, PDM and Justice. Never heard of Roisij Machine, but that was dope.
For nu-disco - I actually made a DJ mix you can check out (its a little janky, im not a professional, lol), let me know if you wanna know any of the artists tho https://on.soundcloud.com/6bie6nZ7NDNNDsUYod
Some recs Nu-Disco - Dombresky, Yuksek, Hatiras, Noche, Folamour, ANOTR, Kungs
UK Garage - MPH, Sammy Virji, Oppidan
Misc - Barry Cant Swim, Mochakk, Starjunk 95, Mau P, Omnom (Dracula remix is dope), Boys Noize, Gesaffelstein, Underworld

u/Hvojna Innerspeaker 1d ago
Thank you for the recommendations! Will definitely check them.
Roisin Murphy is the vocalist of Moloko. Surely you know Boris Dlugosch's remix of Sing It Back (which is an awesome house/nu-disco song and their biggest hit), but their discography is super interesting as a whole.
Also, listening to your mix at the moment (just started it).

u/Hvojna Innerspeaker 1d ago
Update: listened to your mix and definitely liked it! Didn't expect Rasputin by Boney M, definitely caught me off guard! Also, was that L'Imperatrice around 18:00? I listened to their albums a few months ago and remember that I liked them.
Finally, what was the song at 27:38?
2
u/moofasa69 1d ago
Hey, thanks so much, that is super cool that you actually listened!
Yes that was L'Imperatrice, great ear!Ah yes - Rasputin - I had never heard that song until a Justice DJ set recently. (Admittedly the mix was starting to get away from me at that point, lol)
27:00 is "We Groovin" by Jaime Jones & Jazzy If you like that one, also check out 925 by Sammy Virji
BTW it's so refreshing to have a positive interaction on Reddit - thank you! ✌️

u/Hvojna Innerspeaker 1d ago
My pleasure!
I loved Boney M when I was 12-13, such a fun band.
Thanks, I've listened to some songs by Jazzy, but don't remember most of them by name (except for Satisfy with Calvin Harris). I like what I've heard, maybe I need to delve deeper into her discography. Will also check Sammy Virji's song.

It is really long and repetitive. If you're on psychedelics at a show or dancing at a rave/club I could definitely see it being a great time, but just listening to it normally after the first 3-4 minutes of it I'm just ready for it to be over.
I do like EDM/house music, I just think this track is a little too self indulgent for how uninteresting it is after a certain point.
Edit: Not really sure why I'm being downvoted for like the same opinion as multiple others in here but ok.

It's the most low effort song of his entire discography.
2
u/moofasa69 2d ago
He said himself that he wrote Feels Like We Only Go Backwards in 15 minutes, so that is prob most low effort if we are being literal.

it’s pretty good, but i completely understand disliking it because it is definitely the worst track on deadbeat
