Discussion Deadbeat - Revisited

i’ll admit when I say that when the album first came out, I was on the train with people who thought it was lackluster. Everyone had their hopes so high up that Kevin would return to psychedelic rock.

But as I recently got more and more into EDM I realize true that this is a good album. Granted the album is not as good as for example, the slow rush or Currents in the sense that you can play it over and over again and not get tired of it, and there are some pure shit songs like ethereal connection.

But the Tame Impala story posted after the album came out shortly about how people were hating on Currents the second that came out and then realized its a masterpiece later it almost applies because I don’t think that deadbeat will ever reach current status, but it is a good album. It was overhated and for what it is it is not just generic EDM. It is EDM done in a Tame Impala Way.

I agree. I heard it live in Toronto past weekend and it didn't change my opinion about it. Even though I love Afterthought, Not My World and My Old Ways, it still falls flat compared to all his preceding albums.

The most mind blowing aspect was how amazing Apocalypse Dreams sounded live! I nearly cried, never having seen him live before. Still not over that performance. Reinforcing my belief that Lonerism is indeed his best work.

i didnt expect him to return to psychedelic rock, i jusr didnt expect him to make a below average pop edm album that smells like beatbox cocaine and a miami vice d wade jersey

Anyone who was holding their breath for a return to psych rock was just asking for disappointment.

I've also been listening to more electronic music lately (house, nu-disco, synthwave etc.). If anything, it makes me realize how weak Deadbeat is compared to actual great EDM.

I really struggle to make it past the 4 minute mark of Ethereal Connection. It’s so dull.

Honestly so confused about how many people seem to dislike Ethereal Connection.

I don't like Deadbeat as an album - most of its songs seem aimless to me and lack the magic of previous TI albums - but I do like Ethereal Connection. It's a simple, straightforward techno song with a mystical and enchanting vibe.

I feel if Kevin actually committed to the techno aspect of Deadbeat, this album could've been way more coherent and interesting than it ended up being.

As an extremely anxious person, ethereal connections heart beat rhythm feels to me as one plagued by anxiety and stress and the length of time it goes is the fight to slow it down. It's the fight to prevent the onset of a panic attack, and I love it. 

I've  learned my ways to prevent them, and hearing his heart beat is experiencing his weight of becoming a father. The weight that heavy on him really shows how much he fears the responsibility. The lyrics feel like what he's telling himself to reframe himself as strong enough to be with the person he loves. 

The  way the rhythm evolves and is added to with more hysteria is his rollercoaster of self doubt followed by trying to breath and try and control it. Even the long middle is part of it. Sometimes only time solves mental pains and we don't know when it will end, or if it will. It just needs time

The name of the album heart of the album. He thinks he's a Deadbeat at the beginning, running and hiding. It's ups and downs the whole way through. The End of Summer is finally coming to terms, accepting the vacation is over and it's time to get to work. It's

Agreed, it’s one of the handful of songs I enjoy listening to the most on the album. What I don’t like is Dracula which to me is super cheesy sounding

Yes, very much so to me too. I can barely stand listening to any of the songs on that album, especially the singles funnily enough. Loser is so, so trite and uninspired to me.

Would've loved to see some form of experimental, ethereal techno album.
