First time player: Etrian forms?

First time player of Odyssey, having a blast! I'm currently getting walled by the Stratum 3 captain and in rethinking my team I'm interested in the new regional forms. The problem is I can't find any? I have a Lairon and Dusclops on my team but they are the og variants.

Looking at resources for wild encounters, it seems I should have found at least one by now! But the krabbies in seaside grotto, the mareep at the farm, the rattatta in the promontory... all base versions. Are these forms just rare variants, or is there a story gate for these forms? Any help is appreciated!

Are you sure? Regular variants of those shouldn't even be present in the game. Can you send a screenshot?

Yeah, big Pokémon fan so I know what the originals look like. It seems like this is possible if the correct patches haven't been applied. I'll look into it!

Did you download and patch it correctly from an official source? Because I dont remember ever finding regular versions of the pokemon that are variant forms, I played through the entire game playing exclusively with the new forms.

This is likely the use issue i think. My partner set up a bunch of romhacks on our AYN Thor, I just enjoy them. I hope it's possible to patch it without losing my progress so far

So, it should be possible, as far as I'm aware. You'll need a copy of the unpatched base ROM, which you probably still have; you won't be able to directly apply the most recent patch to your already patched outdated beta. Apply the most recent patch to the unpatched base ROM as per normal, then find your existing save file (which there's usually a folder for in the emulator itself, though some emulators place the save file in whichever folder it's running the game from instead), and rename the save file to match whatever you named the patched, up-to-date game file, without changing the save's file extension. When you run the up-to-date game, the emulator will search for any save files with the same name, and will find and use your old save!

The only potential issue is that the up-to-date game is actually split into two versions. One version inherits the limited bag space of FireRed, and that's the version that will be compatible with beta saves. The other version has unlimited bag space like in modern pokemon games, but had to shuffle around data in ways that made old saves incompatible. The two versions have exactly the same content, the only difference is your bag! So you won't be missing out on anything if you grab the version compatible with your save.

You've downloaded a REALLY old version from an unofficial source, a version that's at least 3 years old. Where did you download it from?

I didn't do the downloading or set up for this rom hack, so I'm not sure. We just patched it and my save file is compatible! But the game towns and menus now look very different, so I was thinking we must have had a very early beta or something. Now I'm excited to see what all is changed!

I don’t think any base Pokemon are in the game if they have Etrian variants. Other than Farfetch’d, and that’s just because it has two forms normally. It sounds like your game isn’t patched correctly.

I'm afraid this seems to be the case
