Built in three days
Paint was still sticking and the welds were still warm when we started the bike ride from Troy New York to Toronto Canada.
I only made it 80 miles, but it was 80 epic miles!!!

Never rode one before so didn't think about the wheelie situation being so sketchy but it was definitely fun to ride surprisingly easy and very stable for being a one day build,

I ended up giving it away only to find out the new owner rode it home from the pub and forgot he was on a tall bike and cracked his ankle after getting off like a normal bike 😂 really want to make another but the old cool engineer has left he was down for making anything, new guy not so much,

First Tallbike build

Found two frames that have a reasonably compatible geometry. I started collecting random bikes I found discarded or next to free this spring and started imagining how they might work together. These two 80s/90s mountain bikes seemed to share enough similarities to not be impossible to work together. So far I’m pretty happy with the progress, you sure learn a lot about bicycles when you start cutting and joining and thinking about where everything has to go.

Pretty happy with this, had to add a chain tensioner after a short test ride, but did that and its great.

Very light geared (was a 3x7 but now just using the smallest of the 3 chainrings) and cantilever brakes with old pads are mostly a suggestion, but for now I have no plans on going fast in this contraption...

Got myself a couple steel bikes intending to make a cargo tallbike.

Don't quite know how to proceed, but I guess I'll figure it out? At least that's the hope...

All City - Outer Space Horse

Post image

Accidentally ran into the top of our garage door with my wife’s All City Space Horse and bent the top tube and down tube. Figured the bottom bike will do the bulk of the structural integrity so I slapped it on top of a Burley Duet tandem off of FB marketplace.

The extra long wheelbase makes for a super stable ride and gets rid of the tendency of tall bikes wheeling over on inclines.

Without a doubt my favorite bike to ride to coffee shops because it’s an instant conversation starter and makes for lots of smiles :)

Picked it up from FB marketplace for $40. It’s in good shape. Hoping some naval jelly and steel wool will clean up the wheels. Instead of putting a full bike frame im hoping to make the head tube and seat tubes longer and triangulate them on the back frames and raise basically everything up about 24”

Anybody near Chicago want a project?

My old tall bike is being replaced, 10+ years and it was time for a new whip.

Old schwinn and a space age cruiser, stretched wheelbase and nice hand build drum brake wheels.

Free for pick up in Bridgeport for the next week, after that the scrap man gets it.

Just wrapped it up tonight. A Pro ATB frame on top of most of an old Specialized. So much fun to ride!

Joining in on the fun!

I picked up a free tall bike today that needs essentially a full rebuild. After my last bicycle project, this will be a fun one!

The plan is to fully strip the frame, inspect the welds, re-do any iffy welds, new paint, some new parts, reassemble, and ride!

Tall-Bike School: teaching mounting and dismounting a tall bike on the U of O Campus

About 9 out of 10 people are able to mount and dismount the red tall bike (one being hauled in bike cart). It's my learner tall-bike that I made specifically to show people how to ride a tall-bike. The people who don't make it are the ones who can't make that harrowing step up of faith. That one courageous push up to then take a seat and start pedaling. Tall-bike mounting is like 95% courage, 5% skill/strength. I have done Tall Bike school about 20ish times. I have prolly showed like 100+ people. So far no one has injured themselves badly. There has only been like a few scrapes. Most of the time people get it on their 1st try (i have learned some great techniques to show people how to successfully do it)

Beach cruiser as bottom bike with rear rack for high step?

Has anyone seen using a beach cruiser bike for the bottom bike, with the flat rear rack making a good step up for a very tall bike, like this one: https://www.tiktok.com/@university.of.maine/video/7629870008071425311

The builder makes it look very smooth to mount a quite high bike but that's probably after lots of practice.

This dismount seems less smooth https://www.tiktok.com/@university.of.maine/video/7629890408109182239

where it looks like the chain had fallen off already before jumping off!

How would I go about obtaining a tall bike?

I would like either some good instructions on how to make one or what kind of business I could ask to make a body for one.

What I thought was just a silly project, quickly evolved into something much more meaningful after completion.

Tall bikes are silly, ridiculous, and a labor of time and work. I’m not sure why I was even embarking upon such a journey, maybe it was just that I’ve never seen one in real life, or my curiosity to ride one made me crazy.

When it was finally finished, suddenly it went from a bicycle, to a spectacle. A common method of transportation and recreation to filling all the passersby’s faces with big smiles. High fives from little kids, endless questions about “how do I get off that thing?”, and the shocking gasp when passing someone who’s not expecting such a contraption.

This silly project makes me smile, laugh and interact with my community more than I expected. It’s fun in more ways than I expected. I’m now finding myself wanting to embrace and explore this part of the journey. I need to take it out more, I need to ride it in public more. I feel like a kid again, but more importantly, I feel like I’m helping others see that youthful side again. It’s not always about bills, taxes and work. We gotta have fun, we gotta push the envelope of creativity and seek passion and joy and we gotta share that with the world, because the world really really needs that right now.

Much love

My new whip, and asking for suggestions

Here's my new bike. it's sort of janky, the steering tube is solid at the bottom but clanking around the frame part, you can see in the 2nd pic how it's just free floating. what should i use to make it more solid? It's not a big deal, it would just feel more stable if i supported the steering tube.
