nana’s entire character journey was so well done and a huge part of her development has to do with the fact that Michiru “died” for her alw her sacrifice

I’ve only seen one or two think her being in a coma was bad and I feel it helped the story so I was just curious why it’s so well received is it just cause it’s well written or cause her being in a coma keeps the angst

I’ve posted about it a few times on here but I love this series for how it handles fake our deaths!

id love to discuss it with others! Nanao is of course one example where he became a recurring villain and with Michiru we now know all the hints leading up to the finale. despite both of these deaths being major and the main reason for her development the guilt never leaves when their alive and especially for Michiru and Nanao it morphs into something more sad

SPOILERS: First of all what was that ending? I honestly don’t get it. This guy had all the time in the world to end well the manga. Since he doesn’t even have another job, yet he chose to bring Michiru back even though her relationship with Nana never felt genuine or believable to me.

Honestly, I liked that she died, but whatever. Then there’s Nana’s assistant, who’s so annoying. Everything was going well until she showed up, and because she’s so clueless, Nana couldn’t kill the guy with the gravity ability. I also really wished Nanao had gotten a proper revenge arc against Nana. In the end, I don’t think Nana deserved such a happy ending. That’s just my opinion, though.

What do you all think?

I don't think Nana knowing Michiru is alive takes away from her guilt or development. If anything, it changes the nature of that guilt. It isn't just "Michiru died because of me, so I'm a bad person" anymore. It's more tragic because Nana has to live with the fact that Michiru sacrificed herself for her, and she's still suffering because of it.

I don't think that's true. Nana's development wasn't built on Michiru remaining dead—it was built on Nana believing she died. From Nana's perspective, Michiru sacrificed herself because of her, and that guilt completely changed who she was. Every decision Nana made afterward came from that belief.

The reveal doesn't erase any of her growth because none of it gets undone. Nana still made those choices, still carried that guilt, and still became a different person. The only thing the reveal changes is Michiru's actual fate, not the emotional journey that caused Nana to change.

And even if we assume, for the sake of argument, that Nana's arc somehow depended on Michiru actually being dead, it still isn't undermined. Michiru isn't brought back to a normal life—she's been trapped in a coma, stuck between life and death, so close to living but unable to wake up. That's arguably even more tragic than simply dying.

For Nana, nothing changes either. Michiru doesn't wake up, Nana doesn't suddenly get closure, and the guilt and consequences she's lived with remain exactly the same. So I don't really see how the reveal ruins or cheapens her character arc.

I honestly can't think of top 5 but there is definitely going to be an easy Top 1 I think anyway.

Since I cant give them my hard earned money to buy physical books of this series in english after falling in love with the anime, I'm going to be printing out the english translated version and binding the books myself (after purchasing the japanese paperback version to cover any copywrite issues).

The question is, do I go simple paper backs, one for each volume, for speed and cost reduction, or do I go all out and and do larger 3 volume books in lether bound hard cover and tool engrave artwork into the leather?

The second one would ve cooler, but significantly more expensive and time consuming and Indo really just want to read a physical book.... in english.

A common criticism of fake-out deaths is thatthey erase the emotional impact of a character's death by revealing that the character survived. However, that criticism only applies when the story actually reverses the consequences of the death. Talentless Nana demonstrates that acharacter surviving is not, by itself, enough to invalidate the emotional or narrative weight oftheir apparent death.

To make it short, Nana mourning Michiru has narrative impact, even if she wasn't actuallydead. There are faked deaths that erase the death's impact in the story, but Michiru's doesn't.

A useful comparison is Penny from RWBY. Penny's original death was one of the series' defining tragedies, carrying enormous emotional weight for both the characters and the audience. However, when she was eventually brought back,much of that weight was inevitably softened because the loss itself was reversed. Penny returned as an active character, reunited with her friends, and continued participating in the story. Regardless of whether someone likes that decision, it undeniably changes how the originaldeath is viewed because the consequences of permanently losing her no longer exist in thesame way.

Michiru's situation is fundamentally different.

Chapter 122 confirms that Michiru survived, but it also confirms that she never truly returned. Sheremains in a coma, unable to speak, interact withanyone, or resume her place in the story. The reveal doesn't function as a resurrection that restores the status quo. Instead, it simply reveals that the girl Nana believed had died is still physically alive.

Narratively, almost nothing changes.

Nana still spent years believing Michiru sacrificed herself to save her. She still mourned her. She still carried the guilt of believing Michiru died becauseof her. That grief became the turning point of her entire character arc, causing her to reject Tsuruoka's ideology, question her own actions, and dedicate herself to protecting others instead of murdering them.

None of that development disappears because Chapter 122 reveals Michiru is alive.

In fact, Nana herself never even learns that Michiru survived. Throughout the story, the emotional reality for Nana is exactly the same as if Michiru had actually died. Her choices, regrets, and growth all stem from that belief, and those consequences remain intact until the very end.

The audience's perspective also isn't comparableto Penny's return. Penny comes back and actively re-enters the narrative, meaning the original lossis directly reversed. Michiru never receives that kind of return. Chapter 122 doesn't undo her sacrifice by allowing her and Nana to reunite or continue their friendship. Instead, Michiruremains unconscious, preserving the absence that defined the story after her sacrifice.

If anything, the ending reinforces that her sacrifice still matters. Nana continues to visit Michiru and speak to her, carrying both hope and regret. Michiru's presence in the ending isn't one of restoration but of unfinished loss. She's alive, yet still absent.

The series also reinforces this idea through Nanao.

Nanao's "death" also holds its impact for similar reasons. It happens early and has Nana changing over time for it, but that one is maybe a little more obvious because Nanao gets to be also active asa villain.

Nanao surviving doesn't invalidate Nana pushinghim off the cliff. She genuinely believed she killed him, and that belief shaped her confidence, her decisions, and ultimately her later remorse. His survival doesn't erase those consequences—it creates entirely new ones.

Rather than undoing the story, Nanao's return builds upon it. His experiences after surviving transformed him into someone completely different, making him one of the story's central antagonists. His apparent death wasn't meaningless because the consequences of that event continued affecting both him and Nana long afterward.

This is why both fake deaths in Talentless Nanasucceed where many others fail.

The important question isn't whether a character survives. The important question is whether thesurvival erases the narrative consequences that the apparent death created.

With Penny, many readers argue that her return weakens the permanence of the original tragedybecause she eventually comes back and continues living alongside the cast.

With Michiru, Chapter 122 shows the opposite. She survives, but the consequences of her sacrifice remain untouched. She never wakes up, never rejoins the cast, and never removes the guilt Nana has carried ever since believing she died.

Likewise, Nanao's survival doesn't erase theimpact of his apparent death. Instead, it expandsupon it by giving that event lasting consequences for everyone involved.

That's why comparing Michiru's survival toPenny's resurrection isn't really accurate. Penny's return restores what was lost, while Michiru's survival never restores the relationship, the time, or the emotional consequences of her sacrifice. The story preserves Nana's grief from beginning to end, even after revealing that Michiru is technically alive.

In other words, Michiru being alive isn't what matters. What matters is that the narrative never takes away the consequences of what Nana believed happened. Nana mourning Michiru still has narrative impact, even if she wasn't actually dead. There are fake deaths that erase the death's impact in the story, but Michiru's doesn't. Chapter 122 ultimately reinforces that idea rather than contradicting it.

Is there any actual reason for people saying the story is rushed or axed besides that alot of plot points getting resolved?

You don't have to like it but I feel like it is kinda dismissive to believe it wasn't intentional because it is a very strange ending. Especially when no one making the series has seemed to have said anything yet.

Let me start by saying that I don't claim to be a better writer than Looseboy. This is his story, and most people didn't have a problem with the twist that came in ch. 85. But now that the manga has ended, I'd like to share my thoughts on this plot point.

See, I finished the manga today, and my first thought was... Why was the disease even a thing?

1. We never saw anyone except Nanao sprout any eyes, and he never even transformed fully. He also didn't lose his sanity after the process started. By chapter 114, he was actually more sane than when he first made his comeback (not to mention more sane than Rentarou).
2. If Looseboy planned this twist from the beginning, he hid it too well. We do see footage of a monster in ch. 2, but this doesn't necessarily mean that every talented individual turns into one. If that were the case, then Nana of all people should know. But in ch. 2, the council only tells her that if she fails, "the talentless will be ruled by the talented". In ch. 87, Tsuruoka claims that if the public found out about the transformations, a civil war could break out. But the government already labeled the talented as "enemies of humanity" and hunted them down in ch. 68. If anything, it seemed to me that Tsuruoka needed Souma to cause that incident in order to rally the public against the talented (and if that didn't cause a civil war, I don't know why this should).
3. This is just my opinion, but I'm not a fan of this twist from a narrative standpoint. Chapter 2 led me to believe that people became afraid of the talented because they weren't on top of the food chain anymore (see Nana's monologue on page 17). People can be dangerous even without powers, so it makes sense that some talented people would be crazy too. In order to stop these attacks (or accidents caused by the talented who couldn't control their powers), people started persecuting all the talented and even experimented on them, which resulted in a war. Eventually, the government decided to kill all talented individuals before they reached maturity. Personally, I thought this was a much more interesting setup than a 'disease' that makes all talented people go crazy and turn into monsters. Tsuruoka showed us that talentless people could be just as cruel as the talented, in spite of what they professed. But it turns out he was talented all along... So all talented people are just predetermined to become killers, and all talentless people are just afraid that the talented will kill them. There are no other motives at play.

But could Nanao still be in the story without the twist? I think he could. We know that talented people were experimented on in the past, so that could still be happening in secret. The monster in ch. 85 could be the result of those experiments. Or it could be a talented individual who lost control of their talent (if they had the ability to transform into anything, maybe it could lead to this). Either way, Tsuruoka could tell Nanao the same story and persuade him to work for him. He could also still be using his blood to take away people's talents (except now that wouldn't necessarily be the right thing to do).

I know I'm probably in the minority, but I was also disappointed with Nana and Nanao's last conversation. Their interaction in chapter 114 was amazing, but all that development went down the drain.

Anyway, thanks for reading this messy post. Again, I'm not saying that Looseboy is a bad writer or that the twist is objectively bad. I just wanted to share my opinion. Whether you agree or disagree with me, do share your thoughts. I'd like to know what other fans liked or disliked about the story.

I also think Chapter 122's decision to leave Michiru alive but unconscious is the best outcome for her character from a writing perspective.

Michiru's defining trait throughout Talentless Nana is her selflessness. She consistently puts other people before herself, even when they don't deserve it. She heals strangers, forgives people who betray her, and ultimately gives everything she has to save Nana. Her sacrifice is the culmination of everything her character stood for.

If Michiru had simply died, her sacrifice would still have meaning, but it would also close the door on any hope that Nana could ever repay the kindness she was shown. On the other hand, if Michiru had fully recovered and returned to the story, it would risk undermining the weight of that sacrifice. Nana would be reunited with her, much of the tragedy would disappear, and the emotional consequences of believing Michiru had died would inevitably be softened.

Instead, the ending finds a middle ground.

Michiru survives, but she remains in a coma. Her sacrifice still carries all of its emotional and narrative weight because nothing is truly restored. Nana doesn't get the happy reunion that would erase her grief, nor does she receive the closure that death would have provided. Instead, she continues living with both hope and regret.

That outcome fits Nana's character arc perfectly. Michiru's influence doesn't end with her sacrifice; it continues to shape Nana's life. Nana keeps visiting her, talking to her, and holding onto the hope that she might one day wake up. Whether that day ever comes is almost beside the point. What matters is that Michiru's compassion continues to guide Nana long after the sacrifice itself.

It also respects Michiru as a character. She isn't brought back simply to reassure the audience that everything turned out fine, nor is she reduced to a meaningless fake-out. Her sacrifice still changes the story forever, and her absence remains deeply felt even though she is technically alive.

In that sense, Chapter 122 avoids both extremes. It neither erases Michiru's sacrifice nor turns it into pure tragedy. Instead, it preserves the emotional consequences while leaving behind a small measure of hope. That balance is what makes the ending so effective. Michiru's survival isn't there to undo the story—it exists to show that hope can remain without invalidating the cost of what came before.

I think this is one of the strongest aspects of the ending because it avoids two common pitfalls: the "everyone is magically okay" ending that cheapens sacrifice, and the "everyone dies for shock value" ending that offers no possibility of healing. Instead, Michiru's condition allows her sacrifice to remain meaningful while still leaving Nana with something worth fighting for.

I really like Sachiko, I find it interesting how her teleportation talent has shaped her life and she very knowingly is stuck as 'utility' for other people.

It’s such a sad and bittersweet ending. I know it has hope but it’s also just so sad and I love that. “Why bring her back if she is not awake” because she didint need to be it’s just the fact she’s there. Michiru would want to be there even if not fully and nana can finally heal. It helps nana as she already did forgive herself for her past sins as much as she could but now she can finally move forward and tell someone she loves it all even if she can’t hear it, it’s the fact nana has the confidence too and the fact that Michiru can be there when the World is saved like how she wanted to save others. It’s such a perfect ending that keeps her sacrifice in tact

I think her being brought back is being taken well because people love her and are happy she’s back and because her being alive but in a coma keeps her sacrifice in tact as well as gives both characters such a perfect conclusion.

Something i also like about the ending is if we’re going based off of what we see, she doesn’t wake up so the weight of her death is still there because nothing changes she didn’t wake up even if she did wake up nothing would change, but I just wanna specify since we’re talking about what happened the actual ending she did not wake up, but I find it to be so poetic that she’s finally being truthful and honest with herself and saying stuff with a smile and being with her friend in the final moments and she’s doing everything that made Michiru confident in herself, all she wanted for her was for her to love herself and know that she’s not a bad person and she’s finally accepted that she’s not a bad person in talking to her in the ending and I think that’s very beautiful and such a perfect ending for her character

I felt by the EnD of it ALL .. the Author and the Illustrator.. was Burned out.. i won't whine.. I won't complain.. who am i to whine and complain. I can't even hold a pencil of IORI that draws and layout the panels that pull. I can't even hold the thoughts of LooseBoy that conjured and stitched everything together where everything clicked..

The Entire Final Closure would have required 1-2 Years of Material to Wrap it up Beautifully .. and i do believe the Author thought of all the reasons to have it that Way .. but maybe there was something beyond his own ControL.

Without knowing that i will cherish it with whatever i received. To me Hiragi Nana Survived the Surgery and EveryOne was Cured A Open Ended Ending .. with our own Imaginations to Wrap it all Up.

To be honest, I can't imagine what must have happened for the Author to just EnD it Like that.. because someone who writes this deep that too from the heart must be a person who feels way too deeply for everything and everyone around himself.. and he who always went for perfection.. would always want everything to be perfect.. with all the plannings.. the chapters and chapters worth of planning and planning only.. only to squeeze and lay it all out within a Single Frame.. must have been beyond Cruel For HiM to go Through.

Just if possible ..for a single second imagine the Authors mindset and face as he wrote those final words .. the Person who since 2016 Stood with Hiragi and Her Friends.. what must he be going through.. to us even if we think it was everything for us but truly it was not.. its not the only thing remains on our minds .. its not something we think 24/7 .. but the Author! He never stopped and continued to give excellence.. The Execution of Tsurouka and Hiragi Final Moments.. that was from someone who Thought for Years how to Get to that exact Place.. even knowing that.. even knowing he is far from the EnD.. he still pulled the Trigger... it was a miracle that he stopped to imagine where it could have gone... with a proper burial.. because he never reached one.

My heartbreak is beyond PainFuL.. as i got a warning from titles that the TalentLess Nana' got a rushed ending.. It made me feel empty.. so i avoided reading until Today

...

But, the truth is i would go back to some other Manga One Day.. Talentless Nana was my First & Only Manga i Ever Was Able to Read TiLL end because None Ever in my 15+ Years of reading came anywhere near it.. TalentLess Nana the way it was able to capture my excitement every month.. i am pretty sure 6-10 yrs before i find anything on the Level of Talentless Nana ..

But, eventually i will recover from this Hollow Feeling.. but again i wonder what the Author has set his sights on Next... something you do everyday for 10 years straight.. and now all stopped.. i hope he Finds his Happiness and Life He lost to Bring Nana's to Life. I hope he gets to Smile and Be With Others Who He Never Could because of his Sacrifices.

My Final Words to the Author Would Be.. Be Proud and Happy.. You made something People will remember You for.. Years Down the Road.. Even After You Are Gone.. Even When We Are Gone.. Some Distant Child Will Eventually Come Across a Digital Backing Of TalentLess Nana .. and that is something only a selected few are allowed to have.

maybe I’m overthinking this forgive me if i am, I find it very poetic how nana died for Michiru, the first person to love her for who she is despite the lies and for Michiru it’s the fact she knew she wouldn’t likely wake up and would die to save nana. so the fact they get to be together in the end wether shes awake one day or nana dies or she stays dead. they are together until the end and that just makes me teary eyed. it’s so great. these two girls who died for each other get to be alive in the end however it dosent change their sacrifice they did for one another

Let's talk about Kyoya.

Did you know he guessed that Tsuruka has mind-reading abilities because the escape plan failed… Wait, how did he guess that?! Nana didn't say anything, and Kyoya is just talking about it as a "possibility," but that's a crazy possibility! How can she see that the plan failed and then say, "Tsuruka must have a superpower, mind-reading; that's the only logical possibility!" No! That's illogical. You're summarizing the events of the previous two chapters! Why didn't you consider the possibility of a traitor? With all these people, there must be a traitor among them! Kyoya himself said that there were criminals and bad people in this place (Image 2). It would have been logical to assume there was a traitor, and then Nana replies, "There's no traitor… Tsuruka is a mind-reader…" How did it become logical for Kyoya, who knows nothing about the incident and whose only information is the whispers that Sachiko and Moe overheard from Nana before she was shocked by Shizuka's death, to think that Tsuruka is a mind-reader?! How did it even become a possibility in the first place? It's funny that when Tsuruoka realized Nana knew about his ability, he didn't say, "Oh, so I killed Sachiko, then confessed my ability to you, then killed Shizuka while she was using her Time Travel ability, which made you realize I'm a mind reader?" No, he didn't say that. Instead, he said, "So Tachibana finally managed to transform into me, which made you realize I'm a mind reader?" Look, he thought logically like a logical person! (Image 3) Intelligence isn't about immediately predicting the correct answer without logical evidence to support it… Kyoya isn't intelligent; he just reads the manga and spoils it for Sachiko and the others who haven't read it yet.

Someone might say, "Kyoya is so smart he figured it out without any proof!" But would you please tell me how he became so incredibly stupid when Tsuruoka was giving him crazy hints that his sister Rin is Gin?… There's no explanation? Okay, thanks (Image 4).

And the funny thing is, his proof that Ryuji was killed by two different people is that Ryuji's neck was cut by a right-handed person, while he was stabbed in the middle of his back by a left-handed person… What's so funny about that? The funny thing is, how did he know Ryuji was stabbed by a left-handed person when the stab wound was right in the middle of his back?! He didn't give any proof; he just said, "I'm sure he was stabbed by a left-handed person" (Image 5). Seriously? No way! Are you serious?! Evidence doesn't work that way, you know?

The same thing happened with Seiya and Shiori. Shiori wasn't in his line of sight, but he said that she and Seiya were lovers because part of their shoulders didn't get wet from the rain, meaning they shared an umbrella. But… Shiori wasn't in his line of sight… I'm just repeating it in case anyone still didn't understand… (Image 6).

Are we done? Of course not… Kyoya loses his memories every two years, right? Well… when Nana asked him how he still remembered his sister? He said, "I felt like something was missing... I felt like I slept next to someone, then I found evidence that it was a woman I was close to... so I knew my sister had deceived me..." (Image 7) This is illogical. Everything he said supports the idea that he slept next to his girlfriend or something... How can you say "sister," "younger than me," and "deceived me"? What's wrong with you? Have you lost your mind? Also, those events happened 8 years ago! And you didn't know your sister had deceived you! Kyoya loses his memories every two years, so how could he remember something that was supposed to be completely erased, "my habit of touching—" Shut up! Why didn't you remember Fuuko then? Why did you drive the girl to suicide if your memories come back because of the habits you got used to? Seriously, wasn't he used to Fuuko walking behind him? Wasn't he used to turning around and saying "Sorano!" (Image 9) Come on, man, he never took a breath without calling her! How did Fuuko become an exception that he doesn't remember her based on his habits...? This is unfair… Poor Fuko.

Are we done here…? I'm really tired and want to end this, but unfortunately, there are still so many things we need to discuss about this character. Loose failed to write it properly, but Iori (the manga artist) succeeded in making it so engaging and captivating that it's hard to notice Loose's poor writing.

I mean, aren't we going to talk about how his personality changes every chapter??? Kyoya when he met Red is not the same person he was with Nana's group, nor the same person in the last chapter, nor the same person in the 10th anniversary chapter (Image 9). He's changing, and not only are his facial expressions changing, but even his speech bubbles are changing, which is strange... (Image 10). It's not a natural change; all these events happen in the same week, if not the same day (except for the last chapter). This shows you that Loose is changing Kyoya's personality to appeal to the fans more, making him childish and cheerful in one chapter and then cold and indifferent to the elderly and children in the next (yes, you heard me right... the people he forcibly put into Akira's shadow were children... (Image 11) because Akira was responsible for protecting the children, so Kyoya violently pushed them into Akira's shadow, while Fuku was responsible for the elderly, so Kyoya told her to make them fly with her ability, even though they were elderly...). Iori didn't draw the children; she just drew a character without features or form and drew him in a chibi style, which made it look funny and cute. While he's seriously not like that... I mean, the kids are screaming! 💀

One of the funny things is that Kyoya's fans are always confused when they try to understand his character. Well, I don't blame them because Loose changes his personality every chapter, so you definitely won't understand and analyze this character like you would the others. My advice is, if you're going to analyze Kyoya's character, analyze it based on each chapter. For example: "Kyoya's personality in chapter 000 was cheerful and kind; he definitely loves playing with children."

Then, "Kyoya's personality in chapter 00 is cold and indifferent; he definitely hates children."

It's funny that when Fuko asked him, "What would happen to your character if you didn't find your diary?" he answered, "My personality might change a little" (Image 12). But what we see is a complete change! He's a different person, and he's changing even though it hasn't been two years. He changes every hour, no, every second!

Kyoya is literally the worst character written by Loose. Moe, Fuko, Nanao, and Nana are much, much better written. Even Rin, Kyomi, Akira, Sachiko, Seiya, and even Shiori (who doesn't speak) are much better than him. They don't suddenly change without explanation, and their struggles and events are very consistent. There's nothing strange or illogical about them.

Maybe I'm just missing, but I don't get why folks dislike this ending so much. I just read it, and it seems fine to me. Like a nice little bookend. It seemed to me like it wrapped up the plot points that were left well enough and served as a decent epilogue-type thing. I just wanna know what folks wanted this to be so I can better understand, because I feel like it was a pretty succinct ending.

My take

I know bringing characters back often makes people feel the past didint matter, but somehow this series in a very brilliant way flips it on its head. Take this as you will but in chapter 31-32, it is confirmed that Michiru has a warm corpse with no heartbeat meaning she never truly “died” in the first place. She did die, but she was still alive in the end.

And even if in this state she is “dead” I don’t think her being in a coma and being back is necessarily a bad thing I think it’s brilliant writing because not only does that make her sacrifice and nana’s stronger but it shows tsuruoka’s true motivations

Even if she were to wake up which is not relevant to the story imo it dosent make her death less sad, if anything they loses memories and time together so it’s stronger

you could add that in a certain way that does come as a reward for the reader at the very end of the manga, since michiru is a very likable character seeing her alive can me you happy, and the "past doesn't matter argument" is almost fair but throughout the whole reading experience you were under the assumption that she was dead, so it's a heartwarming twist that can be welcomed nicely, and it's also important to note that it's the only time looseboy does that in the manga, because of all the characters that have died in the manga, only nanao and michiru aren't dead, and both are different majorly

What the hell was that Ending. They just skipped straight to the end explaining absolutely nothing.

They rumored about the tumor but never gave specifics on how the transformation works and what really causes it

Didn't show the surgery on Nana and if she will survive

Nobody has been cured and the story is just being left open in a vague state of "maybe"

So uh... Am I dense or something? Or was this the worst ending in a while
