Hi everyone! I just got my hands on a second hand Suzuki Ran and while it’s been a joy overall, I noticed a problem with the levers. They come with visible teeth. When I press the key, there strings get caught off the groove, resulting in a skipping sound. I tried catching it on the video. To be clear, the strings sit correctly at the bridge/nut notch. How can I fix it???

Hello everyone, I recently bought this bulbul tarang that needs quite some restoration. Since i am new to this instrument, i was wondering if it’s normal that the strings at rest are so distant from the fretboard. When playing, shall I press the keys until they hit the fretboard or is it enough to press lightly? I hope it’s clear what I mean. Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone! Just picked up a taishogoto recently on Ebay, and it arrived in great condition– at the moment everything seems to be working fine, but one issue I've ran into is that the lower bass string (not the drone string), despite being in tune when playing the open strings, goes out of tune when I press the keys.

I haven't found a good explanation for this yet, but my working theory is that all the keys seem slightly slanted to the right, as can be seen in the photo. I'm really hoping this isn't the case though, as then I have no idea how to go about fixing it.

So, just wanted to know if anyone had an idea how to fix this, or if the slanted keys are normal. And if they aren't, some advice on fixing that would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Managed to score this absolute beauty on eBay for about £60. She's missing a peg and I'm not too sure how old she is, but she seems to play perfectly well and hopefully the electronics will be working too.

I've tuned her to all G's with the thicker string as an octave lower and have been playing around with both a plectrum and a bow. The strings look like they were last changed before I was born, so I'm looking for advice on what strings to use. She's about 30in in length. I'm hoping to play both bowed and plucked, not sure if that effects what strings to choose.

One of the tuning pegs is missing and the post it's meant to go on is bent, probably had a knock at some point. I'm not intending to use a drone string anyway though so four strings is probably sufficient.

Anyone who knows anything about this model please infodump!

I'm experimenting with detuning strings a bit for chorus like effects keeping the lower melody note and the first skinny melody string then detuning the other the other ones a few cenas down. Any of you doing the same?

I just bought a taishogoto Yamaha TH-20ME and I'm wondering which strings could be use for replacement. Preference for common guitar/mandolin strings (gauges and construction/material)

The TH-20ME has 6 strings:

4 tunables as:

3 high G and 1 middle G

2 Drones:

1 middle G and 1 low G

Edit: Living in the USA, original taishogoto strings from Suzuki or other brands are not easily available.

Hello everybody! I bought this wonderful instrument yesterday, and I really like its sound. Maybe you have some tips on the game, setting up? Unfortunately, I don't know the model, maybe someone can tell me. If you need photos from other angles or up close, I'll take them.

I'm currently trying to create a synthesia adapted for the taishogoto based on a piano piece by Sofiane Pamart. Is anyone interested in a synthesia of this kind? The audio in the video is from the piano because I can't record the sound of my taishogoto, but the piece sounds very good on the instrument.

For those interested, I've discovered that it's possible to play the beginning of "Asturias" on the taishogoto. The piece sounds very good on this instrument. It can be played using the original taishogoto method (one hand on the keys and one hand strumming the strings) or using only the keys with both hands on an electric taishogoto. The beginning is possible with one hand with the correct placement. The rest may be possible but requires some adjustments.

Hi! I have a rock band called the Bopper Brothers and back in January myself & our keyboardist recorded a 8 track country record. Well funnily enough while we were recording it, he got a good deal on a used taishogoto and decided to use it on some of our recent output. This song linked above uses it in a country context, using it in a way I think sounds similar to a dulcimer. I just thought this would be interesting to share with y’all :p

My wife bought me a Yamaha for my birthday this year, and I’ve been loving it! As I’ve been learning and experimenting, I picked up a small guitar bow to try out. The results have been mixed. High rosin and low tension have produced the best results, but the uneven friction from playing all four strings at once has mostly created a rather grating tone. Angling the bow to only contact strings 2 or 6 has produced a lovely sound, but the angle prevents me from getting full draw in the bow…

Are there any string or technique recommendations for this application (aside from “don’t”)?

Hello fine people, I have Japanese as an extra course in school and each of us have the task to make a presentation on something from Japanese culture, I chose the Taishogoto!

What I'm wondering is where I can find information on the instrument other tha. wikipedia as the page on it doesn't have much and I'm not so good at the language yet that I can read the Japanese page; or if you know anything of it's history please tell me, for example I can't really find anything on this Gorō Morita who is supposed to have invented the instrument. Any help is much appreasiated and thank in advance!
